  • Correnti D'aria Musicale. Storie Di Confine Tra Svizzera E Italia
Saggi_21-7-11_2_Libro 22.07.11 13:38 Pagina 305 Carlo Piccardi CORRENTI D’ARIA MUSICALE STORIE DI CONFINE TRA SVIZZERA E ITALIA Abstract As a frontier territory, Italian Switzerland acted as a cultural and political bridge and a refuge for high profile figures persecuted by a succession of authoritarian regimes in neighbouring Italy. This exchange had significant effects on music as well: in the eighteenth century, it came through the Benedictine monastery in Bellinzona and through the Protestant chants (corresponding to the Catholic canzonette spirituali) published in Valle Bregaglia and Chiavenna. In the nineteenth century, it came through the music published by Euterpe Ticinese of Chiasso and by Carlo Pozzi in Mendrisio. In the 1840s and 1850s the latter was both the northern distributor and a base for Ricordi publications during the difficult years of the Austrian repression in Lombardy. For a variety of reasons, Ticino was a centre of attraction for musicians such as Franz Liszt, Alfredo Catalani, Giacomo Puccini and Ruggero Leoncavallo, while Romualdo Marenco, who composed the music for Ballo Excelsior, and Puccini’s librettist Ferdinando Fontana came to Lugano (Fontana settling there permanently) after the repres sion that followed the 1898 riots in Milan.
