Arroyo moved to save Boracay; Aquino made it a cesspool BY RIGOBERTO D. TIGLAO ON MANILA TIMES, APRIL 4, 2018 OPINION ON PAGE ONE AFTER more than two years of study and on-the-ground investigation by various Cabinet members, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo made a bold move to prevent Boracay from further environmental degradation— even if it would cost her very dearly politically. She issued in May 2006, based on the recommendation of her environment and natural resources secretary Angelo Reyes, Proclamation 1064, the authorization for which was based on the 1936 Public Land Act and Marcos’ 1975 Presidential Decree 705. Arroyo’s proclamation classified 40 percent of Boracay’s 1,028 hectares as “forestland” and 60 percent as “agricultural land.” The proclamation provided detailed geographic coordinates where the forest and agricultural lands were. Aquino and Roxas threw to the dustbin her move to save the island. That meant that the forestland cannot be privately owned, and any resort or residence there should be kicked out. Yet only last month did the DENR uncover the fact that at least 25 percent of these are now occupied by high-end hotels and resorts. The proclamation also meant that areas declared as agricultural may be privately owned, but only after the state first declares it as alienable, with private individuals having to apply for original registration by homestead or sales patent. Yet nearly all of the areas in Boracay that are clearly not part of the forests, especially beach-front areas, are now claimed and occupied by private individuals and corporations, even the Singaporean-owned Shangri-la Hotel.

EUROPEAN POLICY BRIEF COMPETING INTEGRATIONS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA The Erosion of Liberalism and the Rise of Duterte in the Philippines This brief situates the rise and continued popularity of President Rodrigo Duterte within an intellectual history of Philippine liberalism. First, the history of the Philippine liberal tradition is examined beginning in the nineteenth century before it became the dominant mode of elite governance in the twentieth century. It then argues that “Dutertismo” (the dominant ideology and practice in the Philippines today) is both a reaction to, and an assault on, this liberal tradition. It concludes that the crisis brought about by the election of Duterte presents an opportunity for liberalism in the Philippines to be reimagined to confront the challenges faced by this country of almost 110 million people.

  • Diversification Strategies of Large Business Groups in the Philippines
Philippine Management Review 2013, Vol. 20, 65‐82. Diversification Strategies of Large Business Groups in the Philippines Ben Paul B. Gutierrez and Rafael A. Rodriguez* University of the Philippines, College of Business Administration, Diliman, Quezon City 1101, Philippines This paper describes the diversification strategies of 11 major Philippine business groups. First, it reviews the benefits and drawbacks of related and unrelated diversification from the literature. Then, it describes the forms of diversification being pursued by some of the large Philippine business groups. The paper ends with possible explanations for the patterns of diversification observed in these Philippine business groups and identifies directions for future research. Keywords: related diversification, unrelated diversification, Philippine business groups 1 Introduction This paper will describe the recent diversification strategies of 11 business groups in the Philippines. There are various definitions of business groups but in this paper, these are clusters of legally distinct firms with a managerial relationship, usually by virtue of common ownership. The focus on business groups rather than on individual firms has to do with the way that business firms in the Philippines are organized and managed. Businesses that are controlled and managed by essentially the same set of principal owners are often organized as separate corporations, not as separate divisions within the same firm, as is often the case in American corporations like General Electric, Procter and Gamble, or General Motors (Echanis, 2009). Moreover, studies on emerging markets have pointed out that business groups often occupy dominant positions in the business landscape in markets like India, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines (Khanna & Palepu, 1997; Khanna & Yafeh, 2007).

Mediagroup has recognized the gap in the Viennese event sector and turned an unused area with a shed roof into a center for national and international events in Vienna . Since 2015, we have welcomed over 2 million visitors to more than 800 events at MARX HALLE . The range of events include international fairs, in- dustrial and corporate galas, concerts featuring Parov Stelar, Cro, Pharrell Williams, The XX, and The Chainsmokers as well as theater and cabaret plays in the always sold-out GLOBE VIENNA . In addition, we continue to welcome many enthusiastic visitors to popular events such as the Craft Bier Fest, design markets, and various parties at Marx Project. Every year, more than 30,000 art lovers from all over the world come to Neu Marx for the internationally prestigious contemporary art fair viennacontemporary. Protected as a historical monument, the iron structure of MARX HALLE pro- vides a spectacular setting for all kinds of events .
