We NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ASAQS APPOINTED value your subscription. The Board wishes to announce that Mr Larry Feinberg has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Association. It is expected that he will take over from Prof. Thys Siglé at the beginning of October 2011. Larry's previous position was as the regional manager of the Chartered Institute of Building for Africa (CIOB-Africa). As regional manager, Larry was responsible for the overall regional branch financial management, profitability and running of the Africa branch office - as well as the continual monitoring and approval of all branch office expenditure and project investment. He was also responsible for the administration of large financial subsidies sent from Head Quarters in the United Kingdom, and ultimately responsible for the distribution, allocation and effective utilisation of these subsidies through various projects, sponsored events and committee structures. Larry takes over the management of the offices in Midrand at a crucial juncture in our profession's history. His dynamic leadership will be required to steer the ASAQS through the current economic turbulence towards a prosperous future for all its members. MEETING WITH THE SACQSP COUNCIL A presentation was made to the SACQSP Council on the 13th October 2011 to discuss re-instatement by the SACQSP of its recognition of the Association of S A Quantity Surveyors as a Voluntary Association, in terms of the requirements with which a Voluntary Association should comply in order to qualify for recognition by the Council under Section 25 of the Quantity Surveying Profession Act No 49 of 2000. Members will be informed of the outcome soon. The physical address of the SACQSP is now: Unit C27 Block C Lone Creek Waterfall Office Park, Bekker Road, Vorna Valley Ext 21, MIDRAND FIRMS CAN NOW JOIN THE AAQS Membership of the AAQS has to date been restricted to national institutes, institutions, associations or societies which represent a body of quantity surveyors in sovereign countries in Africa. No membership existed for practices and/or individual members. The Council of the AAQS has now resolved to open up a separate membership category for Quantity Surveying practices with effect from July 2011. This decision was taken following ongoing requests from practices for such a category of membership to be introduced. Numerous practices had expressed the wish to become more directly involved with the affairs and activities of the AAQS and the formation of such a membership category would serve to formally enable this process to be regularised.
