  • North Holland Weekend Break
Explore North Holland Weekend Break Welcome to this weekend break full of Dutch classics! Windmills, tulips, cheese and clogs: they all pass by on this journey. Along the way you will come across the picturesque windmills of Zaanse Schans, the characteristic fishing village of Volendam, the cheese market of Edam, and historic towns such as Hoorn, Medemblik and Enkhuizen. The last day is spent in cheese ville Alkmaar, where you cycle by e-bike through an amazing sand dune landscape. In springtime the agricultural fields in this area change into a colorful patchwork quilt: full of blooming tulips! You travel by private car and driver, by train, by ferry, by bicycle and even by steam train and historic boat, all in just one weekend: a very diverse trip indeed! The best travel period to see the flowers in full bloom are the months of March, April, and May. In these months flower bulb fields burst into rows of vivid colors: a delight for the eye. Chances to see the most tulips are best in mid-April. Trip Itinerary FRIDAY - DAY 1: ZAANSE SCHANS, VOLENDAM, MARKEN, EDAM & HOORN Today you will explore the beauty of the countryside north of Amsterdam, which boasts many Dutch icons: wooden shoes, fishing, cheese and windmills! Travel to Amsterdam railway station on your own. Your private guide/driver will be waiting there for you and will firstly take you to Zaanse Schans. During the 17th century, over 600 windmills were constructed in the area around the Zaanse Schans, creating the first industrial zone. The windmills were used, among others, to grind spices, produce paint, saw wood, and produce oil.

Cartographic Styles and Discourse MAGIS Brugge: Visualizing Marcus Gerards’ 16th-century Map through its 21st-century Digitization Elien Vernackt * MAGIS Brugge Project Abstract Marcus Gerards delivered his town plan of Bruges in 1562 and managed to capture the imagination of viewers ever since. The 21st-century digitization project MAGIS Brugge, supported by the Flemish government, has helped to treat this map as a primary source worthy of examination itself, rather than as a decorative illustration for local history. A historical database was built on top of it, with the analytic method called ‘Digital Thematic Deconstruction.’ This enabled scholars to study formally overlooked details, like how it was that Gerards was able to balance the requirements of his patrons against his own needs as an artist and humanist Abstract Marcus Gerards slaagde erin om tot de verbeelding te blijven spreken sinds hij zijn plan van Brugge afwerkte in 1562.

* omslag Dutch Ships in Tropical:DEF 18-08-09 13:30 Pagina 1 dutch ships in tropical waters robert parthesius The end of the 16th century saw Dutch expansion in Asia, as the Dutch East India Company (the VOC) was fast becoming an Asian power, both political and economic. By 1669, the VOC was the richest private company the world had ever seen. This landmark study looks at perhaps the most important tool in the Company’ trading – its ships. In order to reconstruct the complete shipping activities of the VOC, the author created a unique database of the ships’ movements, including frigates and other, hitherto ignored, smaller vessels. Parthesius’s research into the routes and the types of ships in the service of the VOC proves that it was precisely the wide range of types and sizes of vessels that gave the Company the ability to sail – and continue its profitable trade – the year round. Furthermore, it appears that the VOC commanded at least twice the number of ships than earlier historians have ascertained. Combining the best of maritime and social history, this book will change our understanding of the commercial dynamics of the most successful economic organization of the period. robert parthesius Robert Parthesius is a naval historian and director of the Centre for International Heritage Activities in Leiden. dutch ships in amsterdam tropical waters studies in the dutch golden age The Development of 978 90 5356 517 9 the Dutch East India Company (voc) Amsterdam University Press Shipping Network in Asia www.aup.nl dissertation 1595-1660 Amsterdam University Press Dutch Ships in Tropical Waters Dutch Ships in Tropical Waters The development of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) shipping network in Asia - Robert Parthesius Founded in as part of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Amsterdam Centre for the Study of the Golden Age (Amsterdams Centrum voor de Studie van de Gouden Eeuw) aims to promote the history and culture of the Dutch Republic during the ‘long’ seventeenth century (c.

BELGIUM: CYCLING BRUGES ‘THE VENICE OF THE NORTH’ BY BIKE BELGIUM: CYCLING BRUGES Bruges; The Venice of the North, is Belgium's most treasured medieval city. Discovering the rich architecture SUMMARY of churches, abbeys, castles and windmills, combined with heavenly chocolate shops and mouth-watering Belgian cuisine makes this the perfect four day cycling tour. Bruges is unique in that town authorities have taken great care to preserve the city as a living monument to the region's rich past. During the 17th century, Bruges' lace industry became popular and the canals were restored, however, it was not until the late 19th century that Bruges became a popular destination for tourists. Bruges is not only a UNESCO world heritage site, but also a place of great charm and prosperity. Your cycling holiday is based in Bruges; the town centre is reminiscent of a fairy tale with stone footbridges, picturesque canals and cobblestone streets curving past turreted manor houses. The heart of the town centres around the bustling market square; The Markt is dominated by a 13th-century belfry, housing a municipal carillon comprising of 48 bells that ring out across the square. The square, is crammed with busy restaurants and bars that serve everything from mussels and frites to traditional Flemish Beef Stew, Belgian Waffles, and a range of beer-based dishes such as Carbonnades Flamandes.
