Dear Customer, The annual Gramophone Classical Music Awards will be handed out this month: the ten main category winners have already been announced (see opposite page), with the ultimate ‘Recording of the Year’ being revealed at the ceremony in London on 13 September. We have managed to secure special prices on all of the winning discs for you, making it a great opportunity to hear any of the recordings that you may have missed when first released. As you will be aware, the autumn is the time when record labels traditionally release what they consider to be their best recordings, largely down to a mixture of people spending more time indoors over the winter months and an expectation that we spend more money in the run up to Christmas! September usually sees the first seeds of this and 2018 has proved to be no exception, as you will discover from how much we have had to squeeze in this month. Highlights include: Orchestral Songs by Elgar on Somm (our Disc of the Month below); Janacek from the late Jiri Belohlavek on Decca; two discs of British music on Chandos, focusing on works by Gerald Finzi and Ruth Gipps; a new recital from superb soprano Barbara Hannigan on Alpha, exploring lieder from the turn of the 20th Century; another soprano performance, this time live from the Wigmore Hall, by Joyce DiDonato on Erato; and two intriguing opera recordings: Rossini’s Semiramide (his final Italian work, thereafter living and working in Paris) from Opera Rara, and Gounod’s Le Tribut de Zamora from Bru Zane (rebranded from Ediciones Singulares and named after the Palazzetto Bru Zane in Venice, with whom several of the recent productions have collaborated). There are also further Bernstein centenary issues, most notable perhaps being a brand new recording of his second symphony from the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle, with the piano part performed by Krystian Zimerman (DG). Rattle also conducts the new LSO performance of Wonderful Town (LSO Live), plus there are several boxsets, including a gathering together of Bernstein’s recordings as conductor with the Orchestre National de France (Warner), and four new anthologies from Sony. Many of you have been enquiring about the new Birgit Nilsson Live Recordings boxset ever since BBC Music Magazine featured a sampler disc earlier this year. We are pleased to say that this will finally be making its appearance on 7 September and further details can be found on p8.     QUARTETTO DÀIDALOS Anna Molinari – violino Tina Vercellino – Violino Lorenzo Lombardo – Viola Lucia Molinari – Violoncello Il Quartetto d'archi Dàidalos nasce a Novara nell'ottobre 2014 dal desiderio di quattro amici di fare musica da camera. Pur formato da giovani strumentisti, il Quartetto Dàidalos ha già al proprio attivo un cospicuo numero di concerti in molte città italiane, tra cui Milano (Casa Verdi, Villa Crespi e Villa Necchi per la Società del Quartetto), Messina (Filarmonica Laudamo), Genova (Associazione Amici di Paganini, Palazzo Rosso), Cremona (Teatro Ponchielli e Auditorium Arvedi), Como (Teatro Sociale) e Novara (Teatro Faraggiana, Auditorium F.lli Olivieri). Nell’estate 2017 è stato quartetto in residence alla 27a edizione del Piedicavallo Festival, suonando in più di una decina di concerti sia come quartetto che in quintetto e sestetto, collaborando con altri musicisti invitati al Festival. Nel 2016 l’ensemble ha ricevuto una borsa di studio dell'Associazione Piero Farulli (“La Pépinière del Quartetto d'Archi”) e nel 2017 una assegnata dalla Gioventù Musicale d’Italia, che ha determinato numerosi concerti premio in città italiane. Nella stagione 2017-2018, il Quartetto Dàidalos si è esibito per prestigiose società ed associazioni concertistiche, tra cui il Paganini Genova Festival, l’Associazione Musica con le Ali, la Società del Quartetto di Milano (Musica nel Tennis), la Società del Quartetto di Bergamo. Approximate Length: 30 minutes First Performance: Date: 21 May 1919 Venue: Wigmore Hall, London Performed by: Albert Sammons, W H Reed - violins; Raymond Jeremy - viola; Felix Salmond - cello Dedicated to: The Brodsky Quartet Elgar composed two part-quartets in 1878 and a complete one in 1887 but these were set aside and/or destroyed. Years later, the violinist Adolf Brodsky had been urging Elgar to compose a string quartet since 1900 when, as leader of the Hallé Orchestra, he performed several of Elgar's works. Consequently, Elgar first set about composing a String Quartet in 1907 after enjoying a concert in Malvern by the Brodsky Quartet. However, he put it aside when he embarked with determination on his long-delayed First Symphony. It appears that the composer subsequently used themes intended for this earlier quartet in other works, including the symphony. When he eventually returned to the genre, it was to compose an entirely fresh work. It was after enjoying an evening of chamber music in London with Billy Reed’s quartet, just before entering hospital for a tonsillitis operation, that Elgar decided on writing the quartet, and he began it whilst convalescing, completing the first movement by the end of March 1918. He composed that first movement at his home, Severn House, in Hampstead, depressed by the war news and debilitated from his operation. By May, he could move to the peaceful surroundings of Brinkwells, the country cottage that Lady Elgar had found for them in the depth of the Sussex countryside.

A friend of Mr. Strickland and a piano teacher, Ms. Hull studied at the Peabody Conservatory and was best known for her duets with Mary Howe.
