In making his selection the present writer has at least the consolation of believing that while many, doubtless, would desire some honored name to be added, few would wish any name on the list to be displaced. The following sketches are offered in the hope that, brief and imperfect as they are, they may serve to communicate some spark of that divine fire which burns in all heroic lives, and nowhere clearer than in the lives of Christlike and Apostolic men. In the hope, also, that they may aid the imagination in form- ing some picture of the marvelously varied and roman- tic scenery of the African mission field. I THE MISSIONARY HEROES OF AFRICA CHAPTER I THE DARK CONTINENT BEFORE THE DAWN All Gaul, as Caesar says, is divided into three parts. All Africa may be divided into two. These are the Northern and the Southern halves of the continent, which are found to differ widely both in history and in religion. I: Mohammedan Africa From the earliest times North Africa played a conspicuous part in the ancient world which centred round the Mediterranean. The names of Egypt and Carthage are a sufficient reminder to us of that. Accordingly it was among the first countries to be evangelised, and in the early Christian centuries the vigorous Churches of North Africa produced men like Augustine and Tertullian, Clement and Origen. Of these ancient churches only a wretched remnant survives in Abyssinia. In the seventh century the tide of Islam, which flowed north over the churches of Asia, flowed also 15 16 '..THE.MIS-SiOtNARY HEROES OF AFRICA w^stw^rd/and swept "away the Christianity of North Africa. '-Since "then "the Mohammedan faith has more than maintained its ground in Africa. It has grad- ually spread southward, down the east coast to Zan- zibar, across the Sudan to the Niger and the Gulf of Guinea, until to-day it dominates half the continent. No doubt it is fitted to give to savage tribes a certain moral and religious uplift, but its cast iron system blocks all farther progress and makes its converts less accessible to the Gospel than before. In Mohammedan Africa Christian missions have made little progress to speak of, and our concern is therefore with pagan Africa which forms the central and southern half of the continent. It must not be forgotten, however, that Islam is still a living and missionary force, and part of the urgency of African evangelisation lies in this, that if the advance of the Cross be delayed the Crescent may take possession of the whole field. II: Pagan Africa In the 15th century bold voyagers had begun to venture down the west coast, and before the close of the century they had rounded the Cape of Good Hope. From this time forward an increasing volume of trade was carried on with Africa, and settlements were planted along the coasts, west, south and east. Noth- ing, however, was known as yet of the interior, which remained a blank on the map till the 19th century. It was vaguely conceived as a vast and inhospitable desert. Only through the travels of David Living- stone and other explorers were its natural features, its THE DARK CONTINENT BEFORE DAWN 17 lakes and river systems, made known to the world. It was then discovered that the interior of Africa con- sists of a vast, undulating plateau, having a climate very different from that of the low, swampy coast- land, much of it very fertile, much of it suitable for European colonisation. Pagan Africa is mainly inhibited by two races of coloured people, the Negroes and the Bantus. Besides these another race may be mentioned, though numeri- cally insignificant, namely the Hottentots and Bushmen. These lived in the neighbourhood of Cape Town and the districts to the north, consequently they figure somewhat prominently in early colonial and missionary history. Probably they are a remnant of the aboriginal inhabitants of Africa who have been driven south by the incoming of stronger tribes. The Bushmen are almost if not quite extinct. They were pigmies with light coloured skin, and in their habits pure nomads. Wondering continually about, trapping game, carry- ing off cattle, and shooting man and beast with their poisoned arrows, they were regarded by colonists and natives alike, as vermin to be exterminated. Their kins- men, the Hottentots, were more settled in their habits, and have gradually become intermingled with other tribes. It is undoubtedly from the Bushmen and Hot- tentot language that certain of the southern Bantu tribes have borrowed those curious little explosives in speech, common known as "Kafir clicks." Of the two great races, the Negroes inhabit the north of Central Africa from the Sahara to nearly the Equator, and from the Nile valley westward to the Gulf of Guinea and the regions of the Niger. To 18 THE MISSIONARY HEROES OF AFRICA this race belong such numerous and powerful peoples as the Sudanese, the Hausas, etc. The Bantu race, greatest of all the African peoples, occupies practically the whole of South Africa up to the Equator and five degrees beyond it. It includes among its tribes all the names most familiar in South African history— Kafir, Zulu, Matabele, Basuto, Bechuana. North of the Zambesi it embraces all the peoples from Barotsi- land to Uganda.

Tales of young missionaries newly arrived in southern Africa, braving rain, rivers, treacherous paths, diseases, and unknown terrain along the Zambezi to lands lying in the deepest interior of the African continent can be found on shelves in libraries around the world. Along their paths, the missionaries built prayer hamlets that would constitute the foundations of one of the most enduring legacies of this missionary age. Unfortunately for Africa, its missionary fate was largely instigated by West- ern colonialism and its aftermath, born of a series of events that marked the second half of the nineteenth century.1 Europe, experiencing the climax of industrialization, stood in dire need of markets for products and raw materials for production. The reports and narratives of Europeans returning home from short stints as explorers, hunters, traders, and missionaries in Africa about a continent as vast in mass as it was rich in resources fell on eager ears.2 Soon, European powers were stumbling over each other in their scramble for the continent. As political leaders sliced up the continent, European Christian authorities busied themselves with drawing parallel fault-lines along which they would plant the seeds of the Gospel. The battle for a share of the continent and its resources was just as spiri- tual as it was political.

    Imagining the Missionary Hero: Juvenile Missionary Biographies, c. 1870-1917 ‘Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Julie Anne McColl.’ December 2017 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the fascinating and complex body of work surrounding the missionary hero as a product of late imperial ideas of the heroic produced in the form of biography. It will concentrate upon how the literature was appropriated, reproduced and disseminated via the Sunday school network to working-class children between 1870 and 1917. It will discuss how biographers through imaginative narrative strategies and the reframing of the biography as an adventure story, were able to offer children a physical exemplar and self-sacrificial hero who dispensed clear imperial ideas and moral values. This thesis will reflect upon how the narratives embedded in dominant discourses provided working-class children with imperial ideologies including ideas of citizenship and self-help which it will argue allowed groups of Sunday school readers to feel part of an imagined community. In doing so, the thesis sheds important new light on a central point of contention in the considerable and often heated discussion that has developed since the 1980s around the impact of empire on British people.Through an analysis of common themes it will also consider the depiction of women missionaries, asking whether biographical representation challenged or reinforced traditional gender ideologies. To interrogate these components effectively this thesis is divided into two parts, Part One is divided into five chapters providing context, while Part Two will look in detail at the repetition and adaption of common themes.

VERDAL AUSTIN "The sword, may blot out the Ma+abeles the Gospel alone can save them..."(l) Christianity in Rhodesia has been closely linked with the formal occupation of the country by Europeans. Although the religious pioneers of Inyati preceded their political counterparts by thirty years, it took the power of this secular arm of western civilis­ ation to create the circumstances whereby Christianity could take root. Although this paper does not set out directly to prove or disprove the conquest before Christianity theory, it becomes very apparent in s+udying John Smith Moffat's religious work in Matabeleland between 1859 and I865 that secular conquest of the Ndebele state was a pre­ requisite to missionary endeavour. A miracle was needed in Matabele­ land between the establishment of the state in the early 1840s and the later half of the century if Christianity was to succeed without the hacking of political power. This miracle did not occur for a number of reasons, and the violent powor of man and his weapons replaced the power of God as the catalyst of conversion. One major thematic difference between Moffat's religious and political roles in Matabeleland is that in his former role he failed in his task, whereas his political work did much to hurry the dawn of Christianity which he had longed for since 1859* It is ironic that as a missionary in the country he came to believe that the breakup of the Ndebele state was probably the only solution, while he baulked from this violent solution in the 1890s when it had become inevitable.

West School of Religion, Philosophy, and Classics & Ujamaa Centre University of KwaZulu-Natal The Bible as a site of struggle: an ongoing dialogue with Steve de Gruchy Introduction In October 2007, Steve de Gruchy and I, together with other colleagues from our School, drove from Pietermaritzburg to Bloemfontein to attend and present papers at the the Bible Society of South Africa’s Setswana Bible 150 Years Theological Conference. The theme of the conference was “Is the Bible Still Relevant for the Southern Africa Society?” The car journey and the papers we presented continued and deepened a conversation Steve and I had had since his days as Director of the Kuruman Moffat Mission Trust, a position he took up in 1994,1 and from where he had facilitated my research among the BaTlhaping people of the Kuruman area. The paper Steve presented, which was later published together with the other papers, had the title “Reversing the Biblical Tide: What Kuruman Teaches London about Mission in a Post-colonial Era”.2 The paper I presented had the title “From Mmahutu to Today: A Case Study”.3 The emphasis of each of our papers framed our conversation, then and in an ongoing way. In Steve’s paper he states his emphasis as follows: “The point is simply this: the translation and printing of the Bible in places like Kuruman began an irreversible process in which the tide of mission has turned back from the South to the North”.4 The reason “the translation and printing of the Bible” is so central to his argument is because, as he says, using the work of Lamin Sanneh, “The flowering of Christian activity in modern Africa has taken place in ground suitably worked by vernacular translation”.5 More specifically, and this is where our work overlaps, Steve and Sanneh both locate African agency at the centre of what Steve 1 See Beverley Haddad, "Introduction," in Keeping Body and Soul Together: Reflections by Steve De Gruchy on Theology and Development, ed.

    Robert Moffat 'Africanus': A major bi-centenary Two hundred years ago, on the shortest day of the year, 21 December 1795, one of Scotland's greatest sons was born at Ormiston, East Lothian. Nearly eighty years later he was to be the first Nonconformist to speak in Westminster Abbey since 1662. The occasion was a Day of Intercession for Missions, 30 November 1873, and, unknown to him, at that very time the body of his son-in-law was being carried by loving African hands to the coast for its return to Britain. Five months later Moffat was to be at the Abbey again for the interment of those earthly remains beneath a slab which bore the words, 'DAVID LIVINGSTONE ... For thirty years his life was spent in an unwearied effort to evangelize the native races ... "Other sheep I have which are not of this fold, them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice".' Both father and son-in-law were missionaries of the London Missionary Society. Today it is the memory of the younger man which is the best remembered and yet J. Du Plessis could write in his classic History of Christian Missions in South Africa , 'Robert Moffat was undeniably the greatest missionary which that Society sent to South Africa — the greatest in natural ability, in patient devotion to duty, and in deep, transparent piety .’1 It is one of the mysteries of divine providence that while the gospel should have entered parts of North Africa within the apostolic age, it was only in recent centuries that it penetrated the darkness of the centre and the South.

Although current interpretations of the historical agreements which formed the basis for European settlement and rights in land acknowledge that a variety of forms of evidence (written, numerical, verbal and pictorial) are admissible in law, and generally recognise that the spirit of an agreement is paramount, special difficulties (principally those of culture and language) are associated with getting to the heart of such agreements. Typically, the written words of legal texts have been scrutinised minutely, but forms of evidence other than the written words have been neglected. This paper compares the unwritten evidence for treaties and concessions in three countries, namely Canada, New Zealand and Zimbabwe. Examples include wampum belts in Canada, and surviving verbal synopses of written documents, for example explanations by missionary translators, which were often couched in figurative or metaphorical language and, at the time, may have carried considerable weight. Despite agreements being negotiated verbally, the official version is generally the written document with appended signatures or written marks. From an indigenous point of view, the verbal agreement often carries greater weight, especially when ratified by some form of cultural protocol, for example smoking a pipe of peace.

Ann Moffat prayed and fretted over young Robert, who had more interest in sailing than in the things of God. Ann often read the thrilling accounts of the work of the Moravian missionaries in Greenland and the East Indies to her children, but Robert, as on this day, seemed to take little interest in such things. Is it possible that this is the boy who would one day be called “the patriarch missionary of South Africa,” who would travel thousands of miles through uncharted bush and desert, and secure the respect and ear of the most powerful chiefs? Forsyth, Advisor The purpose of this thesis was to conduct an in-depth investigation, analysis, and interpretation of Britain’s land policy in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe and its implications from 1890 to 2003. It assessed the extent to which the British government up-held its obligations to the 1979 Lancaster House Agreement on the question of land redistribution, and outlined the evolution of Britain’s policy over time; considering its aims, implementation, and outcomes. This study showed how the policies pursued by Britain impacted the land reform program in Zimbabwe. It argued that the policies pursued and advocated by Britain, i.e. economic liberalization, respect for “property rights” and the rule of law, did not promote, and neither did they result in a fair distribution of land. Economic liberalization prioritized the interests of the rich landed classes of the colonial era, as well as those of other emerging social and political elites.
