Khumalo https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6474-408X National University of Science and Technology, Zimbabwe [email protected] ABSTRACT The resuscitation of the Ndebele kingdom has been a topical issue in Zimbabwe. The Ndebele kingdom, which was established by king Mzilikazi ka MaShobana was destroyed by white settlers during the reign of his son Lobengula. The years following the colonisation of Zimbabwe saw a number of efforts being made to liberate the country. The liberation struggle came to an end in 1980 when Zimbabwe, a country which came to being as a result of nationalists was liberated and the black majority assumed power. However, there have been growing calls for the resuscitation of the Ndebele kingdom, which in some circles mean breaking away from Zimbabwe. One wonders what the reasons behind the call for the resuscitation of the Ndebele kingdom were: Is this move fuelled by poor service delivery in Zimbabwe? Are the Ndebele people unhappy with the current state of affairs in Zimbabwe? Is this another revolution waiting to happen? This study sought to establish the reasons behind calls to resuscitate the Ndebele kingdom in Zimbabwe. A qualitative research methodology was employed and interviews held with one of the heirs to the Ndebele throne, as well as the leader of one of the movements advocating for the resuscitation of the Ndebele or Mthwakazi kingdom. Salutation Greetings all ouens and crows, from various Africa branches, to another edition of “The Sitrep”. A final edition, for 2019, is planned for December – perhaps to include a bit more humour and news before the “silly season” reaches its conclusion Rhodesian Forces Memorial Service – Sunday 10 November 2019 Hearty congratulations must be poured upon the Rhodesian Forces Memorial Committee who organised, and ran, an outstanding show at Dickie Fritz the day before Independence. This was not the first of such gatherings and particular attention had been paid to ironing-out past “niggles”. It was the third invitation for Rhodesian High Schools to lay a wreath on behalf of their school, in honour of those fallen during the war years. Twenty-seven schools were represented this year, whereas, only 17 were present at the 2017 ceremony – a sure sign of the increasing popularity of the event. Wing Cdr Bruce Harrison, Alan Strachan and Padre Bill Beer. MC for the day was none other than Wing Cdr Bruce Harrison whose sense of presence never fails to instil an atmosphere of relaxation and family unity, despite the formalities about to unfold. The Rhodesian Forces Memorial Committee is chaired by Alan Strachan who delivered the welcome – followed by prayers, led Lt Col Bill Dodgen, lesson delivered by Alf Herbst and the sermon conducted by Padre Bill Beer. Steve Prophet (RhAF) showed us how to sing “Amazing Grace” – properly, before Marcus Main-Baillie (RhAF) “turned the pages” to read random snippets of those who fell, whilst serving with various units, during the bush-war – not forgetting members of the general Rhodesian population and the animals that perished in the conflict. -

chapter 5 Soror nostra es: Jesuits, Protestants, and Political Elites in Southern Africa among the Shona and the Ndebele, 1889–1900 Aquinata Agonga Historical archives overflow with nineteenth-century accounts of the heroic incursions of missionaries into the African hinterlands, equipped with mini- mal resources and even less knowledge about their destinations. Tales of young missionaries newly arrived in southern Africa, braving rain, rivers, treacherous paths, diseases, and unknown terrain along the Zambezi to lands lying in the deepest interior of the African continent can be found on shelves in libraries around the world. Along their paths, the missionaries built prayer hamlets that would constitute the foundations of one of the most enduring legacies of this missionary age. Unfortunately for Africa, its missionary fate was largely instigated by West- ern colonialism and its aftermath, born of a series of events that marked the second half of the nineteenth century.1 Europe, experiencing the climax of industrialization, stood in dire need of markets for products and raw materials for production. The reports and narratives of Europeans returning home from short stints as explorers, hunters, traders, and missionaries in Africa about a continent as vast in mass as it was rich in resources fell on eager ears.2 Soon, European powers were stumbling over each other in their scramble for the continent. As political leaders sliced up the continent, European Christian authorities busied themselves with drawing parallel fault-lines along which they would plant the seeds of the Gospel. The battle for a share of the continent and its resources was just as spiri- tual as it was political. -

Juvenile Missionary Biographies, C. 1870-1917 'Thesis Submitted in Accordance with the Requirem
Imagining the Missionary Hero: Juvenile Missionary Biographies, c. 1870-1917 ‘Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Julie Anne McColl.’ December 2017 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the fascinating and complex body of work surrounding the missionary hero as a product of late imperial ideas of the heroic produced in the form of biography. It will concentrate upon how the literature was appropriated, reproduced and disseminated via the Sunday school network to working-class children between 1870 and 1917. It will discuss how biographers through imaginative narrative strategies and the reframing of the biography as an adventure story, were able to offer children a physical exemplar and self-sacrificial hero who dispensed clear imperial ideas and moral values. This thesis will reflect upon how the narratives embedded in dominant discourses provided working-class children with imperial ideologies including ideas of citizenship and self-help which it will argue allowed groups of Sunday school readers to feel part of an imagined community. In doing so, the thesis sheds important new light on a central point of contention in the considerable and often heated discussion that has developed since the 1980s around the impact of empire on British people.Through an analysis of common themes it will also consider the depiction of women missionaries, asking whether biographical representation challenged or reinforced traditional gender ideologies. To interrogate these components effectively this thesis is divided into two parts, Part One is divided into five chapters providing context, while Part Two will look in detail at the repetition and adaption of common themes. -

The Past is Our Country: History and the Rhodesiana Society c. 1953-19701 David Kenrick, University of Oxford2 This paper uses the work of an amateur historical society - the Rhodesiana Society – as a lens to explore the racialised nature of attempts to define a white Rhodesian identity in the crucial post-war period of 1953-1970. It builds upon the existing corpus of work on history and national identity, moving beyond the more traditional sites in which historical discourse is produced – academia and the state – looking instead at how individuals in private organisations sought to use the past to shore up identities in the present. It does so using the particularly interesting example of a British settler colony in the late twentieth century, where minority rule was being upheld even as the rest of the continent entered the first stages of its post-colonial life. The paper focuses in particular on discourses of imperial legitimation which stemmed from the earliest history of white British/South African settlement in the colony. Historical work and narratives exploring early conflicts with Africans, specifically the 1896 Mashona and Matabele rebellions, served to legitimate the continued white presence by having shown that they had ‘won’ the country with their own blood. These histories also used techniques of historical silencing, culturally reinforcing the social, legal, and economic segregation which ascribed to Rhodesia’s Africans a state of permanent subservience and anonymity. The paper also suggests how these sanitised narratives of Victorian (white) heroism may have resonated with white Rhodesians in the 1960s, embroiled as they were in their own slowly escalating guerrilla war. -

THOMAS MEIKLE, 1862-1939 The founder of the Meikle Organisation sailed from Scotland with his parents in 1869. The family settled in Natal where Thomas and his brothers John and Stewart gained their first farming ex perience. In 1892 the three brothers set off for Rhodesia with eight ox- wagons. Three months later they had completed the 700 mile trek to Fort Victoria. Here they opened a store made of whisky cases and roofed over with the tarpaulins that had covered their wagons. Progress was at first slow, nevertheless, branches were opened in Salisbury in 1893, Bulawayo and Gwelo in 1894, and in Umtali in 1897. From these small beginnings a vast network of stores, hotels, farms, mines and auxilliary undertakings was built up. These ventures culminated in the formation of the Thomas Meikle Trust and Investment Company in 1933. The success of these many enterprises was mainly due to Thomas Meikle's foresight and his business acumen, coupled with his ability to judge character and gather around him a loyal and efficient staff. CHAPTER ONE OCCUPYING THE GROUND: BISHOP KNIGHT-BRUCE (1891–1894) In 1891 the Church of the Province of South Africa (CPSA), a daughter church of the Church of England, expanded into Central Africa. A diocese was created by the Provincial Synod for an area north of the Diocese of Pretoria, which ended at the Limpopo River. This diocese, “for Mashonaland and the surrounding territories”,1 was one of the largest Anglican dioceses in the world. It was roughly the size of France, two-and-a-half times the size of Great Britain (see Map 1, p. xx). The central area of the original diocese is today divided into the fi ve dioceses of the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe (Harare, Matabeleland, Mutare, Central Zimbabwe and Masvingo). Mashonaland itself was little known to the outside world in 1891 and undefi ned, other than by its general topography and the distribu- tion within it of Shona-speaking peoples (‘the Mashona’). At its centre was a large, high plateau, well-wooded and watered. To the north, the land fell away to the Zambezi River; to the east, in the region of the Manyika people rose a mountainous barrier beyond which lay the colony of Portuguese East Africa. Much of the area was dominated by two peoples of Southern, Nguni, origin: the Gaza, in ‘Umzila’s country’ to the south-east;2 and the Ndebele (‘Matabele’), in the south-west (see Map 2, p. xxi). Ndebele territory (Matabeleland) was itself bordered to the south- west, across the Ramokwebana and Shashe Rivers, by territory known as ‘Khama’s country’: Khama was the leading chief of a number of native polities which had come under British infl uence, as the Bechuanaland Protectorate, in 1885.3 To the south-east of Matabeleland and south- west of Gazaland ran the Limpopo River, which served not only as an ecclesiastical boundary between the new Diocese of Mashonaland and 1 ‘The Bishop’s Letter: Resolutions: Section VII’, CMSA 6:64 (April 1891), xxxi. -

Who are the Ndebele and the Kalanga in Zimbabwe? Gerald Chikozho Mazarire Paper Prepared for Konrad Adenuer Foundation Project on ‘Ethnicity in Zimbabwe’ November 2003 Introduction Our understanding of Kalanga and Ndebele identity is tainted by a general legacy of high school textbooks that have confessedly had a tremendous impact on our somewhat obviated knowledge of local ethnicities through a process known in history as ‘feedback’. Under this process printed or published materials find their way back into oral traditions to emerge as common sense historical facts. In reality these common sense views come to shape both history and identity both in the sense of what it is as well as what it ought to be. As the introduction by Terence Ranger demonstrates; this goes together with the calculated construction of identities by the colonial state, which was preoccupied with naming and containing its subjects (itself a legacy on its own). Far from complicating our analysis, these legacies make it all the more interesting for the Ndebele and Kalanga who both provide excellent case studies in identity construction and its imagination. There is also a dimension of academic research, which as Ranger observes, did not focus on ethnicity per-se. This shouldn’t be a hindrance in studying ethnicity though; for we now know a lot more about the Ndebele than we would have some 30years ago (Beach 1973). In contrast, until fairly recently, we did not know as much about the Kalanga who have constantly been treated as a sub-ethnicity of the major groups in southwestern Zimbabwe such as the Ndebele, Tswana and Shona. -
