On Sunday, June 16, the James Joyce Society of Sea Cliff celebrated Blooms- day with a walk through the Village be- ginning at the Water Tower a/k/a Martel- lo Tower , making stops at Still Partners a/k/a Davey Byrnes Pub, the Post Office, the Library, KC Gallagher's a/ka Bar- ney Kiernan's , ending up at Memorial Park which stood in for the Cemetery, Sandymount Beach, and the Blooms' bedroom. At each stop, there were read- ings and quotes from Joyce's famed novel Ulysses. Joe Hughes provided the music with his Irish penny whistle and Dan and Ann DiPietro , the commentary. Bloomsday is observed around the world every year on June 16 to commemorate the day Ulysses takes place. Festivals, parties, and scholarly conferences all mark the day but Sea Cliff's celebration was uniquely Sea Cliff.

A graduate of Glen Cove High School, Johnson retired in 1999 follow- ing a 30-year career as an art teacher and track and cross-country coach in Glen Cove. He passed away three years ago, and the dedication was fittingly held on his birthday. Sunshine, who ran for Johnson on the cross-country team, served as master of ceremonies at the track dedication. He welcomed a multitude of familiar faces, including fellow runners Tracy Crow, Ed O’Rourke and Carlos Vasquez, former Glen Cove Athletic Director Sal Trava- tello, and former assistant coaches Jim Peterson and Savy Gallo, among others. Glen Cove City Mayor Ralph Suozzi and Nassau County Legislator Delia De Rig- gi-Whitton were also on hand to present proclamations commemorating the dis- trict for the dedication and for memori- alizing Johnson for his work with local student-athletes through the years. “AJ made running a team sport easy,” said Sunshine, who shared interesting stories about his former coach, recalling “rabbit runs” to Garvies Point in which team members attempted to catch their coach. He also spoke of how Johnson was not just a coach, but also a mentor and friend. “He was always available to us.
