A LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

As the long-time director of Camp Young Judaea-, I’d like to welcome you to the CYJ family.

And a family is what we are. Since 1952, CYJ has created not only a fun and exciting Jewish community, but one in which campers can explore, challenge themselves, and grow as individuals. From the numerous opportunities for campers to choose their own activities to the experiences of communal living in a shared space, camp is a magical place for kids to gain valuable independence, life skills, and to learn about themselves.

Our community is built on diversity of abilities, backgrounds, and denominations, creating endless opportunities for discovery of Jewish identity and connection to Israel. This entire process takes place under the leadership and supervision of our experienced and passionate staff.

Who knew transformational experiences could occur in just three weeks?

Thousands of alumni have begun their Jewish journey with us. So jump on board-we’re saving you a spot!

B’Shalom,

Frank Silberlicht 5 6

Cards, games, as from Mexico, the , bonding activities, and good old-fashioned Israel, and beyond. conversation are great substitutes for electronics, and reinforce interpersonal and communication skills that will pay dividends for the rest of their lives. 7

OUTDOORS

Even in the Texas heat, summer is meant to be spent outdoors. At camp we take every opportunity to play sports and games, swim, hang out, and even eat outdoors. Of course, we head indoors during the hottest part of the day for some rest time, but no one leaves camp without a healthy dose of fresh air.

SAFE

The health and safety of your children is our top priority. During camp, Hays County Sheriffs patrol the grounds 24/7 – you can’t beat that for security! As far as camper health goes, we have a state-of-the-art Health Center and a full-time nursing staff. We also have a rotation of doctors that visit camp throughout the summer. 8

JEWISH LIFE AT CYJ

Judaism at camp is more than prayer services. We are Jewish in everything we do. At CYJ Texas our programming is fun, interactive, and accessible to all - Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, unaffiliated, and beyond.

All of our programming can be linked back to our four core Jewish principles. Though our campers represent a wide spectrum of Jewish upbringings, we believe our core principles appeal to all denominations.

COMMUNITY (Am Yisrael) KINDNESS (Chesed) All are part of one family. We must show kindness to We instill in our campers a pride in others no matter what. their and a love of Israel.

RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCE SHABBAT

LOVE OF ISRAEL

In addition to building strong Jewish identities, we also strive to strengthen our campers’ connection to Israel. How do we do it? Through language, culture, and personal interactions. At camp, counselors are madrichim, activities are peulot, and rest time is menucha. By infusing Hebrew into our daily lives, campers become familiar with the sounds and rhythms of Israel, and bring them to life at CYJ. From the Israeli game of gaga, to our Israeli dances (rikud), songs (shira), and more, day-to-day life at CYJ is saturated with Israeli culture.

We also bring a large delegation of staff from Israel. We love that our campers form personal bonds with Israelis of all stripes, and many of them meet up again in later years when they’re overseas!

Throughout the camp session, we incorporate Israeli content into the unique educational programs of every aidah (age group). This includes learning about Israeli culture and values, the modern State of Israel, the Land of Israel, the people who live there, and so much more. In Bogrim (rising 8th graders), campers even learn about building a new society like the Zionist pioneers and then “fight” their way through the grueling but rewarding IDF Day! 11 12

CAMP SKILLS ARE LIFE SKILLS Camp is the ultimate environment for learning 21st- century skills. These skills learned at camp help prepare CYJers for higher education and their future careers.

BUNK LIFE

The bunk is at the very heart of the camp experience. Kids sleep, eat, live, and breathe as a bunk, creating a strong and bonded family. It’s the setting for countless childhood memories, and the birthplace of lifelong friendships. Not to mention—it’s really fun! Playing games, telling jokes, sharing secrets… bunk life is like having a massive three week slumber party!

Every cabin features bunk beds for 12 to 16 campers and 3 to 4 staff members. Before campers arrive, we choose their beds and cubbies for them—this way, campers have a space waiting for them when they walk in and there’s no “advantage” for those who arrive earlier. Bunk assignments are made on the basis of school grade, gender, social and emotional maturity, and mutual requests.

The bunks are roomy and air- conditioned. They have their own sinks, showers, and toilets. On laundry days, the campers’ clean, folded clothes are delivered to their cabins. 30
