The North

1.1 Description

The parishes of , and are mainly flat farming land with the hills of North Barrel running along the eastern side of the parishes. The parish of is more hilly, with steep cliffs along the sea boundary.

The town of Ramsey is situated at the mouth of the Sulby river in a wide, sandy bay at the boundary of Maughold and . It has been a centre for fishing and boat building from early times. The hills of Cumberland are visible on clear days.

The parish of Bride contains the , a wide, flat expanse of sand and gravel. The gravel seashore is prone to erosion and the high-water mark has changed considerably over the years. Andreas and Jurby are more fertile, farming country.

1.2 Origins

1.2.1 The name Lawson is a patronymic of Law i.e., it designates someone who is the “son of Law”.

Law is probably a topographical name from the Old English hlaw, meaning a hill. This would gives us “someone who is the son of he who lives on or near the hill”.

A possible alternative derivation is that Law is a English pet name for Lawrence, which in turn is derived from the Middle English given name of Lorens or from the Old French name of Lawrence. Both these names designate a person from the italian town of Laurentium, named for it’s laurel or bay trees.

1.2.2 The name is common throughout northern England and . The heaviest concentrations are in Yorkshire and Lancashire. The earliest known reference is at Littondale, Upper Wharfdale, Yorkshire in the 14th century.

1.3 Early Days

Persistent family rumours or legends insist that the family originated in Scotland. No corroboration has yet been found for these stories, nor has their source been traced. If the stories are true, a possible candidate for the first Lawson on the is James Lowsone who was baptized on the 27th of February, 1568, at Perth, the son of Robert Lowsone. The source of this information is the IGI and no research has been conducted.

The earliest documents that have been found on the Isle of Man for the Lawson family are the wills of James Lawson (322), his wife Isabel Cowle (323) and Richard Lawson (618).

From these documents we know that Isabel, the wife of James Lawson, died on the 8th of January, 1627-8, that her maiden name was Cowle and that at the time of her death she had two unmarried children, Robert (619) and Edward (620). There may have been other, unnamed, married children, most likely Richard (618).

James Lawson died on the 5th of June, 1634, some six years after Isabel. However, his Will mentions “unmarried children by the later wife” and that “ye mother refuse to take administration in the behalf of the children.” which indicates that his wife was still alive and that there were minor children. The most likely explanation of these documents is that James remarried after the death of Isabel, probably in 1628 or 1629, and that there were children of this second marriage. So far the second marriage has not been traced and only one child has been identified. Research has been limited to the Island, though it is possible that the second marriage took place off the Island.

Richard Lawson in his Will of 1654 names his children Anthony, James and Ellin. The three children are named executors. As no Supervisors were appointed for the children it would appear that they were all of age, i.e., that youngest was probably at least fourteen. This means that Richard was probably born no later than 1612 and married no later than 1635. These dates could be very much earlier. As no records of any other Lawson families have been found it is likely that Richard was a son of James.

Ewan Curghey, a witness to the Richard’s Will and a pledge for his inventory, was the husband of Katherine Lawson, see 1.47.2.1.

If Richard Lawson was the son of James and Isabel Cowle, then he was probably married by January, 1627-8, as he is not named as an unmarried child in Isabel’s Will. This means that he was probably born before 1607. For the time being it is assumed that Richard was the eldest son of James and Isabel Cowle and that he was born circa 1603.

Assuming that marriage of James and Isabel occurred shortly before the birth of the first child and when both parties were of full age, it is calculated that James and Isabel would have been born in approximately 1580 and married in approximately 1602.

No records of these events have been found and the calculated dates given here could well be out by ten years either way.

1.4 The First Manx Lawson

1.4.1 James Lawson (322) was born circa 1570 in northern England or Scotland. He moved to the Isle of Man as a young man, settling in Ramsey. He married twice, first to Isabel Cowle circa 1605 and secondly circa 1628 to an unidentified person. He was buried at Bride on the 6th of June, 1634. See 1.5 and 1.47 for details of his descendants.

1.4.2 Isabel Cowle (323) would have been born in approximately 1580. She died on the 8th of January, 1627–8. Nothing is known of the parents of Isabel Cowle, however, in the light of the fact that her grandson, Richard (311), was the miller at Lhen Mooar (see 1.17.1 below) it is interesting to note that the wife of Marghad McCowle is listed as the tenant of the mill at Alia Altadale (Lezayre) in the Manorial Roll of 1511-15. See 1.5 for details of her descendants.

1.4.3 The as yet unidentified second wife of James, (1718), was born probably around 1600, maybe in Douglas. It is believed that her christian name may have been Isabel. She married James Lawson circa 1628, but no other details of her life have, as yet, been verified. See 1.47 for details of her descendants.

Birth or christening records for the children have not yet been found. Considering that they were all married in Andreas, it is likely that the family lived in Andreas, probably at The Lhen.

1.4.4 There was a burial at Andreas on the 8th of November, 1663, of Catherine Lawson, orphan. This indicates that at least one parent was dead. See also 1.47.2

618 Richard C 1603 Maughold?. Died 1654 619 Robert C 1605 Maughold? 620 Edward C 1607 Maughold?. Died 1668

1.5.1 Richard Lawson (618) was born circa 1603. From his Will in 1654 we know that he had at least three children, Anthony, Ellin and James, while Ellin’s Will of 1669 mentions her brother Anthony and her sister Ann Lawson. The name of Richard’s wife is not known. See 1.6 for further details of his descendants.

1.5.2 Robert Lawson (619) was born circa 1605. He is named as an unmarried child in his mother’s Will of January, 1627–8. Robert is believed to have married circa 1640, though the name of his wife has not yet be determined, and to have had at least one son. In all likelihood he was the ancestor of the branch. See 4.2 for further details.

1.5.3 Edward Lawson (620) was born circa 1607. He is named as an unmarried child in his mother’s Will of January, 1627–8. He married Jony Christian in approximately 1628 at Andreas. The dates for these events have not been confirmed. Edward’s occupation has not been determined. He died at Lezayre in 1668. See 1.17 for details of his descendants.

The Bishop’s Court of the 11th of January, 1637, held at Jurby, records the divorce of William Gawen and Ann Kellie (1888). Ann was accused of adultery with Edward Lawson of Andreas, by whom she had two children. She also had a third child by Thomas Kellie of Jurby. One of these children appears to have been John Lawson

who was baptized on the 9th of January, 1631–2, at Jurby “the bastard son of Edward”.

1.5.3.1 Jony Christian (621) was born circa 1610. Nothing is known of Jony’s parents. Considering that her grandson Edward became the miller at Lhen Mooar, it is interesting to note that a John McCristen was the miller at Breryk and Altadale in 1515. She died on the 26th of April, 1670. See 1.17 for details of her descendants.

She married John Garrett at a date not yet determined. In her Will she made bequests to her brother Anthony Lawson and to her sister Ann Lawson. Her husband was instructed to give what he wished to the Minister and his wife. It would appear that there were no issue of the marriage. She died in 1669 at Lezayre.

Edward served on the Sheading jury in November, 1701. The record of the confirmation of his son, Richard, in 1718 tells us that Edward was a miller.

In September, 1728, Edward and his wife Ann Crinnel entered into a marriage contract with Elinor Cowle on befhalf of their son Edward. This contract was accepted as their Will in 1736.

1.7.1.1 Ann Crinnel (1576) was born circa 1680, probably in Andreas. She married Edward Lawson circa 1700 at Andreas. She was buried on the 12th of June, 1728, at Jurby. See 1.8 for details of her descendants.

In December, 1717, Ann Lawson alias Crenil was one of the witnesses to the Will of Margaret Kneal.

The IGI shows that Ann daughter of Thomas Crenil was baptized August, 1676, at Andreas.

1.7.2 James Lawson (1266) was baptized on the 28th of March, 1686, at Andreas, a week after the death of his father. He married Margaret Cowle on the 3rd of June, 1716, at Andreas. James was buried at Andreas on the 29th of January, 1723-4. See 1.10 for details of his descendants.

There were no issue of the marriage. His Will mentions Catherine and Mary Christian who were possibly sisters-in-law to his wife from her first marriage. The marriage contract of his brother Edward in September, 1728, makes provision for a legacy of 37s on the death of the longer liver of his parents.

1.8.3.1 Mary Kneen (1583) was born circa 1705. She married William Lawson on the 1st of August, 1734, at Arbory. This was possibly a second marriage for her Will mentions a son John Christian. She was buried on the 6th of September, 1740, at Malew.

1.16.1 John Lawson (1804) was baptized on the 10th of December, 1792, at Andreas. Not mentioned in his father’s Will of 1799. Beneficiary under the Will of his grand–mother, Bahee Sayle.

1.16.2 Ann Lawson (1805) was baptized on the 17th of November, 1793, at Andreas. She married Samuel Veale on the 31st of March, 1821, at Andreas, see 9.14.2. She was buried on the 1st of March, 1873, at . See 9.15 for details of her descendants.

She was a beneficary under the Will of her grand–mother, Bahee Sayle. At the census of 1841, she is living at Crauyn, Ballaugh, and is described as spinning. Her children are living with her. Samuel has not been found in the census of 1841, but if he was a fisherman this would not be unusual. In 1851, by this time a widow, she was living at Dollagh, Ballaugh, when she was earning her living as a washerwoman. In 1861 Ann was still living at Ballaugh with her unmarried son, William, a fisherman. In 1871 she was living at Crauyin, Ballaugh, with her unmarried son, John.

1.16.3 James Lawson (1806) was baptized on the 2nd of March, 1796, at Andreas. Not mentioned in his father’s Will of 1799. He possibly emigrated to the USA, showing up in the 1880 census for Dodge, Wisconsin, aged 84, with his wife, Ellen aged 80 from the Isle of Man, and grand-daughter, Nelly Gould aged 14 from the Isle of Man.

1.16.4 Esther Lawson (1807) was baptized on the 20th of May, 1798, at Andreas. She is mentioned in her father’s Will of 1799. There is a burial for an Esther recorded at Andreas on the 9th of June, 1799.

1.17 The Children of Edward Lawson & Jony Christian continued from 1.5.3 and 1.5.3.1, FGF 100. Edward had two illegitimate children by Alice Kelly. So far, only one of these children has been identified.

John Lawson (624) was baptized at Jurby on the 9th of January, 1631, when the register entry reads “bastard son of Edward”. No further details are available.

1.17.1 Richard Lawson (311) was born circa 1635. He married Bahee Kewn on the 1st of July,1656, at Jurby Church. The witness’snames are not given, but both parties are of Jurby parish. Richard’s name was given as Ric. Losson. Richard was the miller at Lhen Mooar, Andreas, at the time of his marriage. Lhen Mooar is right on the border of Jurby and Andreas parishes. Richard died at Andreas on the 17th of December, 1705 and was buried the next day at Jurby. His burial was entered also in the Andreas register. See 1.18 for details of his descendants.

The Chapter Court held on the 28th of June, 1654, at Jurby heard the presentment of Richard Lawson of KK Andreas ”for being farming on the Lords Day in tyme of publick worship in ye evening“.

In 1662 Richard was one of three men presented to the Andreas Chapter Quest for fishing on a sunday in May. The presentation indicates that Richard was the owner of a fishing boat, probably in partnership with others for in his Will of 1705 he leaves his quarter share of the “old boat” together with his share of “five pair of nets” to his son Edward (544). At the time of his death the boat was possibly in poor state at the time as it is stipulated that his son James was to receive two boards when the wood was broken.

At the Michael Chapter Court held in October of the same year, with John Camaish, Richard swore out a complaint against Michael Christian junior and his wife for cutting firewood on the Lord’s Day.

In 1680 the Comaish family of Ballacomaish were in financial straits as they had been unable to pay the Lords Rent for the past three years. Richard evidently lent them fifty shillings and in return was granted the use (mortgage on) of a parcel of Quarterland for a period of fifteen years and a further five years, i.e., until October 1700

Richard had the right to build a house or houses on the land and at the removal, i.e., at the end of the twenty year period when the land was to revert to the Comaish family on the payment of £5.10, the roofs would be Richard’sproperty. At this time, the houses would have been of sod construction. The roof and ridge pole together with any doors would be made of timber and would be the most valuable part of the house and, most importantly, could easily removed to another location. The annual

rent (Lord’sRent?) is quoted as 71d. Richard is to pay a Single rent each year to John Elison and in addition is to pay £3 to the widow of John Ratcliffe, apparently another debt of the Comaish family. It seems that Richard assumed a total of £5 10s of Comaish debts and that the Comaish family had an opportunity to reclaim the property during the final five years of the mortgage by repaying this amount.

In 1692 Richard is mentioned in the Composition book with the Comaish family. At this time he is still in possession of the land and his age is given as sixty-two years, which would confirm his year of birth as 1629-30. At his death in 1705 Richard’s Will indicates that he was still in possession of the land and had built a house on it.

A bequest in his Will left a quarter of an heifer to John Lawson and a further quarter to each of his first son and daughter. This would imply that John was childless, if not unmarried, at the time of the death. Although it is not stated in the Will, John was most probably his grandson, the son of James (605), and would have been about twenty years old at the time. The final quarter of the heifer was left to Thomas Curphey his nephew, the son of his sister Katherine and Ewan Curghey.

Patrick Christian is mentioned twice in the Will. Patrick was the son, by a previous marriage, of Richard’s daughter-in-law, Joney Kaneen, see 1.18.5.1 below. Richard acknowledges that he and his son Edward owe between them nine stooks of corn to Patrick. Further, Edward is left sufficient corn to sow Patrick’s croft.

1.17.2 Margaret Lawson (625) was born circa 1639. She was alive and apparently unmarried in 1674 when she was appointed, with her brother Richard, supervisor to Ann’s underage children.

1.17.3 Katherine Lawson (626) was born circa 1642. From her mother’s Will, she appears to have been in Ireland in 1670. Katherine died on the 21st of December, 1701, intestate, unmarried and without issue.

1.17.4 Ann Lawson (627) was born circa 1645. She married William Killip (see Volume III, 21.1.1) circa 1670. She was buried at Braddan on the 11th of June, 1674. Her Will proved at £10–7s–5d and her minor sons John and Thomas were appointed administrators. See Volume III, 21.2 for details of her descendants.

The earliest Andreas baptisms are for 1666.

1.18.1 Bahee Lawson (446) was born in approximately 1657. She married Thomas Clark on the 19th of May,1677, at Andreas. She inherited 12s 3d from her mother in 1703. She died in April, 1704.

1.18.1.1 Thomas Clark (611) was baptized on the 2nd of September, 1646. He married firstly Catherine Kee and secondly Bahee Lawson (446) on the 19th of May, 1677. He died on the 8th of December, 1689.

1.18.2 James Lawson (605) was born in approximately 1660. He married Catherine Kannen in 1682. There were seven children of the marriage. He followed his father as the miller at Lhen Mooar and was, in turn, succeeded at the mill by his son John. He probably had a second trade of weaving as he left his looms to his second son, Richard, together with instructions that his youngest son, David, was to be taught the trade. In 1695, together with William Curlett, he gave John & Mary Comaish a mortgage of £5–18s–8d on a piece of land known as Bally Marten. It is possible that this adjoined the land that his father, in 1680, had given a mortgage to John & Dorethy Comaish. The following year, with his brother Edward, he purchased a parcel of Quarterland known as Corckan Minan for £2–8s–0d. In 1703 he purchased a piece of Intack land known as Brew Croft from John Keey for £1–4s–0d. He died on the 13th of April, 1712. See 1.19 for further details of James and his descendants.

1.18.2.1 Katherine Kannen (612) was born circa 1660. She married James Lawson in 1682. She died on the 20th of September, 1729. See 1.19 for details of her descendants.

1.18.3 Mary Lawson (606) was born in approximately 1662. She was left 10s in her mother’s Will. Her father’s Will acknowledged that the debt was still outstanding and she was left an additional two shillings. She married Stephen Cleator circa 1680, see Volume IV, 12.1.1.

1.18.3.1 There were possibly two children of the marriage. William Cleator, son of Stephen, was baptized in October, 1682, at Andreas. An unnamed female, daughter of Stephen, was baptized on the 27th of December, 1684, at Andreas.

1.18.4 Jony Lawson (607) was born in approximately 1664. She was left a yard of linen by her mother and a candall by her father. She married John Cowle circa 1685. She was buried on the 1st of July, 1707, at Andreas. See 1.43 for details of her descendants.

1.18.4.1 John Cowle (1847) was born circa 1660. He married Jony Lawson circa 1685. Survived his wife. See 1.43 for details of his descendants.

1.18.5 Edward Lawson (544) was born in approximately 1668. He married Joney Kaneen at Kirk Andreas in June 1701. His mother left him her share of the table in her Will of 1703. From the Ecclesiastical Court records we know he died intestate on the 14th August, 1736. It would seem that his death was unexpected as he was a relatively wealthy man to have died intestate. The record provides us with the names of four of his children and tells us that he was a miller. See 1.44 for details of his descendants.

In December 1696, together with his brother James, he purchased a parcel of Quarterland known as Crockan Mian from Henry and Ann Christian for £2 8s 0d, of which 12s was paid at the time.

With his sister Ellinor, he was the major beneficiary under his father’s Will of 1705. He inherited the mortgaged land of the Comaish family with a proviso that his sister Ellin was to enjoy a share of it. This land was valued at 70s. Edward appears to have been promised part of the land (to a value of 55s) in his marriage contract. This obligation is acknowledged in his father’s Will and the remaining 15s value of the land is left equally between Edward and Ellin. In October 1706 he paid his sister her share of the property (7s 6d). He received a third of his father’ssheep (the remaining two thirds going to Ellinor).

He inherited his father’s share (a quarter) of “ye old boate”, probably a fishing boat as he was also left his father’s share of the five pair of nets. It is likely that the boat was in poor condition at the time for there is a proviso that his brother James is to have two boards when the boat is broken up. It is not known who the other owners were.

1.18.5.1 Joney Kaneen (576) was baptized on the 10th of November, 1668, at Andreas, the daughter of Thomas Kaneen. She married firstly [Patrick] Christian some time around 1690, and secondly Edward Lawson in June of 1701 at Andreas. There was one son of the first marriage, Patrick, born in approximately 1700. Her first husband died some time around 1700. Unfortunately there is a gap in the Andreas Parish register for the years 1685 to 1704 so as yet it has not been possible to confirm the date of her first marriage, the birth of Patrick or the death of her first husband. Her Will, by affirmation, states that she died on the 7th of October, 1733. She was buried on the 9th of October at Andreas. See 1.44 for details of her descendants.

1.18.5.2 Patrick Christian (54) was born at Andreas circa 1700. He was confirmed at Andreas on the 2nd of November, 1718, when he is listed as “Patrick Christian, step son of Ned Lawson at ye Lane” (Lhen).

1.18.6 Margaret Lawson (608) was baptized on the 21st of September, 1670, at KK Andreas. She is not mentioned in her mother’s Will of 1703 nor in her father’s Will of 1705. However, in December of 1706 a Robert Quirk (321) is issuing a claim on her behalf for 9s 6d against the executors of her father’s Will. This would indicate that she was still alive at that time and possibly married to Robert Quirk.

1.18.7 Ellinor Lawson (609) was baptized on the 3rd of October, 1673 at KK Andreas. She was known as Nelly. She married Daniel Corlett (1231) on the 15th of December, 1722. She was buried at Jurby on the 10th of May, 1733.

In 1703 she inherited from her mother five pounds and a chest with all her mother’s shaped linen and woollen cloth. The money was, evidently, not immediately paid for in her father’s Will of 1705 it is acknowledged that she is still owed the five pounds and in settlement of this debt she is left 4 blankets, a cow, an axe and an interest in the mortgaged property. She was to enjoy the use of half the property until such time as her brother Edward paid her forty shillings for her interest and a five shillings for her share of the roof. This debt was discharged by Edward in October 1706. Ellin was also left the poll, presumable the ridge pole of the roof. She inherited two thirds of her father’s sheep. She was bequeathed a petticoat by her sister Jane in 1723.

1.18.7.1 Daniel Corlett (1231) was born circa 1673. He married Ellinor Lawson (609) on the 15th of December, 1722. He was buried at Jurby on the 14th of October, 1758.

1.18.8 Jane Lawson (610) was born in approximately 1675. She married firstly to John Wade (1232) and secondly to Daniel Kneale (1234) on the 20th of August, 1709. She was buried on the 20th of December, 1723, at Andreas.

She was left a yard of linen in her mother’s Will of 1703 and a blanket in her father’s Will of 1705. Her Will of 1724 names her sons Michael and John Wade and her grandson John Wade.

1.19.1 John Lawson (613) was baptized on the 18th of October, 1684, at Andreas with his twin sister, Margaret. He inherited a quarter of an heifer from his grandfather in 1705. His grandfather left two further quarters of the heifer to John’s first son and daughter. By his father’s Will in 1712, he inherited land called the Crockanon (probably the property purchased by his father and uncle from Henry and Ann Christian and called Crockan Minan) and Caple Vartin and, with his brother Richard, part of a property called Cannells. In 1721 he purchased from William & Mally Cannel a parcel of Quarterland “already in ye possession of ye sd Jon Lawfon & mother whereon his houses are errected”. He continued the family business of miller at Lhen Mooar. John married Catherine Tear (see 1.55.4) on the 13th of June, 1713, at Andreas. He died of smallpox on the 25th of October, 1723 and was buried at Andreas the same day. He left three minor children and his widow expecting their fourth child. See 1.20 for details of his descendants.

1.19.2 Margaret Lawson (1012) was baptized on the 18th of October, 1684, at Andreas with her twin brother, John. She married William Radcliffe (see Volume I, 14.4.1) on the 24th of April, 1704, at Andreas. She was buried on the 10th of February, 1724–5, at Andreas. See Volume I, 14.5 for details of her descendants.

1.19.3 Richard Lawson (614) was baptized in August, 1687, at Andreas. He was evidently a weaver as he was left weaving looms in the Will of his father in 1712. Additionally, he was to teach his younger brother, David, the trade of weaving. In his grandfather’s Will of 1705 he was left a lamb from any residue. He married Catherine Kneale in approximately 1716. He made and signed a Will on the 25th of May, 1752. He was buried at Andreas on the 30th of May, 1753. See 1.23 for details of his descendants.

Richard appears to have been quite successful in his business life, combining the trades of weaving and fishing. In 1721 he was able to grant a five year mortgage of £9–2s–0d to John & Bahee Camish on a portion of their farm known as the Vole Land. The mortgage appears to have been renewed on a regular basis for it was not until October 1760 that his children acknowledged that the mortgage had been repaid.

In 1729 he was sworn as a member of the Setting Quest which indicates that he had some standing in the community. He appears to have been active in the general opposition to the tithing system then in effect, the subject of widespread dissatisfaction for in 1729 he cited for failing to pay the tithe on a catch of herring that he landed at Douglas. He was sentenced to be imprisoned in St. Germans prison on St. Patrick’s Island. As he refused to go peaceably, the Sumner was authorized to employ a soldier to enforce the sentence. It is not known how long Richard spent in gaol.

1.19.3.1 Catherine Kneale (1136) was born in approximately 1690, probably at Andreas. She married Richard Lawson circa 1716. Catherine died on the 21st of February, 1741-2, at Andreas, see Will. See 1.23 for details of her descendants.

1.19.4 Bahee Lawson (615) was born in approximately 1690. She married John Kneal on the 23rd of May, 1730, at Andreas. She was buried on the 5th of October, 1763, at Andreas.

Her Will states he died on the 3rd of Ocotober and mentions her only daughter Bahee, her son John (who was off the Island) and her niece Margaret Cleator alias Lawson (see 1.23.5).

1.19.5 James Lawson (1128) was born in approximately 1693. Although he is not mentioned in his father’s Will of 1712, James did not die until the 7th of July, 1717, at Andreas. He was a weaver. His Will mentions his brothers John, Richard and David, his sisters Margaret, Bahee and Jony and his mother Catherine. Several debts are mentioned including one for wool on the loom. As no wife is mentioned, it appears that he died unmarried and without issue.

1.19.6 David Lawson (617) was baptized in 1695 at Andreas. David married firstly Eleanor Lace on the 6th of June, 1730, at Andreas and secondly to Catherine Quirk on the 19th of February, 1735-6, at Andreas. David died on the 6th of May, 1777, at Andreas. See 1.26 and 1.39 for details of his descendants.

He was probably a weaver as his elder brother, Richard, was charged in their father’s Will to provide training in the weavers trade to David. He was appointed supervisor, with his brother Richard and brother-in-law William Radcliffe, on the death of his brother John in 1724. He was the main beneficiary under his mother’s Will in February, 1729. In 1740 David purchased a parcell of land from John & Bahee Camish for the sum of £2–9s–4d situated in the north–west corner of a field known as St. Martin’s Chappel.

1.19.6.1 Eleanor Lace (632) was born in approximately 1710, the daughter of Henry Lace of Peel & Ann Crow. She married David Lawson (617) on the 6th of June, 1730, at Andreas. She was buried on the 17th of December, 1735, at Andreas. The Episcopal court sitting in March of 1735–6 noted her death but it was not until the next circuit that a decree was issued naming her only surviving child, William, sole executor. See 1.26 for details of her descendants.

1.19.6.1.1 Henry Lace (2261) was born circa 1685. He married twice: firstly to Ann Crow circa 1710 and Secondly to Elizabeth Christian on the 1st of August, 1719, at Andreas. No other details available.

1.19.6.1.2 Ann Crow (2262) was born circa 1685. She married Henry Lace circa 1700. She died circa 1718 at Andreas. No further details available.

1.19.6.1.3 Elizabeth Christian (2263) was born circa 1695. She married Henry Lace on the 1st of August, 1719, at Andreas. No further details available.

1.19.6.2 Catherine Quirk (1018) was born circa 1710. Her mother was Joney Kenread (5622) who married William (?) Quirk (5621). She married David Lawson on the 19th of February, 1735-6 at Andreas. From her mother’s Will (see Volume III) we know Joney died on the 22nd of March, 1743, at Andreas and that Catherine had a sister Ellinor and a brother William. She received five shillings and a blue pettycoat under the Will. She was buried on the 9th of February, 1762, at Andreas. See 1.39 for details of her descendants.

1.19.7 Jony Lawson (616) was born in approximately 1697. She was left a kerchief, a coif and a lamb by her grandmother. She married Daniel Keneen on the 1st of February, 1712, at Andreas. In June of 1725 she and her husband agreed to help support the minor children of her brother John. She was buried at Andreas on the 7th of Februrary, 1760. See her Will (Andreas 40, 1760) and 1.42 for details of her descendants.

1.19.7.1 Daniel Keneen (1151) was born circa 1690. He married Joney Lawson on the 1st of February, 1712, at Andreas. Died 1734, see Will 1734-021. See 1.42 for details of his descendants.

577 Richard B Aug 1703 Andreas 578 Ann B 27th Jun 1705 Andreas 579 Bahee B 9th Jan 1708 Andreas 580 Edward B 22nd Apr 1711 Andreas 541 James B 2nd Jan 1715 Andreas

1.44.1 Richard Lawson (577) was baptized at Kirk Andreas in August of 1703. He married firstly Ann Caine, see 11.5.3, on the 30th of November, 1729, at Jurby, and secondly Lenora Christian (1570) on the 19th of November, 1752, at Braddan. He was buried at Braddan on the 2nd of April, 1758. See 5.3 for details of his descendants (there were no issue of the second marriage).

Sometime between January 1732 (when their second child was baptized) and December 1734 (when their third child was baptized) the family moved from Andreas to Douglas. His Will, by affirmation, mentions five of his children, so it seems likely that three of the children (Edward, Hester and Anne) had died by this time. Although his occupation is not given in the Will, the baptismal record of his third son, John, states that he was a miller. Judging by the contents of the Will, he must have been successful in his business as he had provided apprenticeships for his three youngest sons (the eldest son, Richard was evidently living away from home at this time). After leaving an auger and adze to his brother James, Richard charged his brother–in–law David Caine and his brother James to care for the three youngest children.

1.44.2 Ann Lawson (578) was baptized at Kirk Andreas on the 27th of June, 1705. She is mentioned in her mother’s Will of 1733 when she inherited equally with her sister Bahee all her mother’s “shapd linen and wollen cloathes”. Presumably this referred to cloth that had been made up into clothing, or shaped, as distinct from “whole” cloth which was direct from the mill. She married Thomas Corlett on the 13th of April, 1725. There is a burial for Ann Corlett alias Lawson on the 23rd of February, 1782 at Jurby. See 1.45 for details of her descendants.

1.44.2.1 Thomas Corlett (1841) was born circa 1700. He married Ann Lawson on the 13th of April, 1725, at Andreas. See 1.45 for details of his descendants.

1.44.3 Bahee Lawson (579) was baptized at Kirk Andreas on the 9th of January, 1707 and confirmed at Jurby on the 17 of October, 1725. In addition to the her share of the shapd cloathes mentioned in her mother’s Will, she also received a legacy of forty shillings, apparently the outstanding balance of a marriage contract. She married Andrew Quirk on the 27th of July, 1729. She was buried on the 25th of February, 1773, at Andreas. See 1.46 for details of her descendants.

1.44.3.1 Andrew Quirk (1155) was baptized on the 29th of November, 1711. He died on the 21st of December, 1784. See 1.46 for details of his descendants.

1.44.4 Edward Lawson (580) was baptized at Kirk Andreas on the 22nd of April, 1711. He died of smallpox shortly before his third birthday and was buried at KK Andreas on the 2nd of February, 1713/4.

1.44.5 James Lawson (541) was baptized at Kirk Andreas on the 2nd of January, 1714-5. He married Catherine Killey at Onchan Parish Church on 29th of April, 1740, see

Volume I, 12.3.2. He died on the 24th of August, 1790, and was buried on the 26th at Onchan. See 5.13 for details of his descendants.

In 1733 he was appointed his mother’s sole executor. It is through Catherine that any possible “Royal” connection may be established. Their first two children were born in Onchan, but by May, 1744, James and his young family have moved to Douglas where the remaining six children were born. James appears to have been a successful wheelwright and joiner. He lived and worked in Drumgold Street at a property known as “Parr’s Rent, No 3", which consisted of a house and a garden. In 1784 he bought a second house, known as ”Finch’s Rent No 65" for £42 from Paul and Mary Kelly.

1.47.1 Isabel Lawson (676) was baptized on the 25th of November, 1628, at Braddan.

Only the father’s name is recorded at the baptism. She was possibly a child of James Lawson’s second marriage. It should be noted that she was baptized at Braddan while other documents relating to the early Lawsons put the family in the North.

In her Will mention is made of a total of four sons, a daughter and a daughter-in-law. Her eldest son was Thomas Kewin who married Elizabeth, the daughter-in-law mentioned in the Will. It has not yet been established whether Thomas was the son of a first marriage or if he was illegitimate.

Two other sons, Robert and Thomas Curghey, and her daughter Margaret are left bequests in the Will. Her husband Ewan and “his son Joh:” are appointed executors. It is assumed that John was also Catherine’s son and that he was at least twenty-one at the time.
