The firsc is the chronicling of the bare facts of school life, the lists of the terms functions and functionaries, and the Sports events. The second is the interpretation of the spirit of the school and of its multifarious activities by means of descriptive writing. Often the two methods are mixed; for instance, the report on the play will contain both the programme and a criticism of the production or, an account of a Rugger match will include the names of the team and the scorers, and a description of how the team played. The facts are the bones of the Harrovian, but without the flesh and blood of ideas it cannot be made to live. -

Government Reiltys ElIan Vannin The Council of Ministers Annual Report Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Memorials Committee .Duty 2017 The Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Piemorials Committee Foreword by the Hon Howard Quayle MHK, Chief Minister To: The Hon Stephen Rodan MLC, President of Tynwald and the Honourable Council and Keys in Tynwald assembled. In November 2007 Tynwald resolved that the Council of Ministers consider the establishment of a suitable body for the preservation of War Memorials in the Isle of Man. Subsequently in October 2008, following a report by a Working Group established by Council of Ministers to consider the matter, Tynwald gave approval to the formation of the Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Memorials Committee. I am pleased to lay the Annual Report before Tynwald from the Chair of the Committee. I would like to formally thank the members of the Committee for their interest and dedication shown in the preservation of Manx War Memorials and to especially acknowledge the outstanding voluntary contribution made by all the membership. This Committee plays a very important role in our community to ensure that all War Memorials on the Isle of Man are protected and preserved in good order for generations to come. The Committee continues to work closely with Manx National Heritage, the Church representatives and the Local Authorities to ensure that all memorials are recorded in the Register of Memorials. -

Background At the sitting of Tynwald Court on 14th December 1999, it was resolved "That a Select Committee of five Members be appointed to consider and report on the reform of local government." Mr Bell, Mr Braidwood, Mr Cannel', Mrs Hannan and Sir Miles Walker were elected to the Committee. We have held 11 meetings, at the first of which Mr Cannel! was elected Chairman. 2. Election for Marown Parish Commissioners Barrantee Skeerey Marooney 24 April 2008 – Marown Methodist Church Hall, Crosby Dear fellow Marown resident My name is PAUL CRAINE. I have been privileged to represent you on Marown Commissioners for the past year. I was “elected unopposed” in March 2007. It didn’t feel at all like democracy in action so I am pleased that the people of Marown will have a chance to vote on 24th April and I invite you to vote for me. I am 52 years old and was born and grew up in the Isle of Man. I first lived in Marown when my parents moved here in the 1970s. I am married to Ann, we have two daughters and we have lived in Ballagarey for almost 8 years. I work in the Department of Education as the education adviser to the Island’s five secondary schools, a post I took up in 1999 after a successful 20-year career in teaching. In addition to being one of your Commissioners I have, until recently been Chairman of the Island Games Association of Mann. I am currently Secretary of the Island’s Christian Aid Committee as well as a member of the Methodist Synod. What have I done in 12 months as a Marown Commissioner? I have attended every monthly meeting of the Commissioners. I have also represented Marown Commissioners on the Western District Housing Committee and on the Municipal Association. In turn I have represented the Municipal Association on the Richmond Hill Consultative Committee which monitors the work of the Energy from Waste Plant. -

Oil and nuclear energy can only bridge the gap between the coal we have and the power we need. The bulk of this energy must, for many generations, come from coal. To meet the increasing demands for coal, vast schemes of recon- struction and expansion are being undertaken by the coal-mining industry, for which there must be an adequate supply of suitably qualified and well-trained men. University Scholarships.—The National Coal Board offer a hundred University Scholarships a year ; most are in Mining Engineering, and some are available in -Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering and in Fuel Technology. They are worth about the same as State Scholarships but there is no parental means test. School Leavers.—There are also good opportunities for advance- ment for boys with initiative who come straight into the industry from school. You can attend part-time courses (for example. National Certificate courses) at technical colleges for which you are given day release from work with pay. Management Training.—When you are qualified—either through the University or through technical college while working—you are eligible for a two or three-year course under the Board's Management Training Scheme. Each trainee has a course mapped out for him personally, with a senior engineer to give him individual supervision. Scientific Careers.—If you are interested in a Scientific Career, there is absorbing and rewarding work at the Board's Research establishments, in the coalfields on operational work. -

Dear Parishioner, Arbory and Rushen Parish Commissioners are writing to announce some administrative changes which will lead to an improved service, as well as to ask for your views on some exciting proposals to improve the efficiency of service provision in both Parishes. In the next few months the two Parishes will be recruiting a Deputy Clerk, with the Clerk then reducing his hours accordingly. This move allows the Clerk to use his skills and experience to undertake the key roles of political and financial support, while the Deputy Clerk will provide more general administrative assistance. If you’re interested in the new Deputy Clerk’s role (see brief description attached), please contact the Clerk for more information using the contact details above. Arbory and Rushen always focus on delivering best possible value for the money you provide and due to the changes above, the Commissioners have been looking to see what greater efficiencies from closer working between the two Parishes can be achieved. The Commissioners are keen to hear your views on the following options and would welcome your feed-back either through the Clerk using the contact details above, or through attendance at following public meetings – Ballafesson Methodist Hall, 7.30 on 11th September, or Arbory Parish Hall, 7.30 on 12th September. Option 1 – Merged administration Under this option, one authority would provide under contract to the other authority all the services currently delivered by that authority.
