The tribe corresponding to this month is Ephraim. Tishrei is linked with the Tribe of Ephraim, who was Joseph’s second son. When Ephraim was born Joseph said, “For G-d hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction”, as such His name means doubly fruitful. The root word for his name means to bear fruit. This word is the same word used in Genesis 1:22 when G-d said, “be fruitful and multiply”. In the Bible, Tishrei is called Ethanim, which means to have enduring strength. It was named Ethanim because of the ancient streams that continued to flow in Jerusalem. For this reason it is known as “the month of the strong” or “the month of the ancients” (Yerach Ha’eitanim). This gives us the picture of the Ancient of Days who sits upon His throne who will never be removed. Deuteronomy 11:12 says, “the eyes of Elohim thy G-d are always upon it (Israel), from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year”. This month is opportune time to realign with the eyes of G-d and be strengthened by the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit). http://freedomhouseac.com T October 2017 Tishrei 5778 - Cheshvan 5778 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 11th of Tishrei, 5778 1 12th of Tishrei, 5778 2 13th of Tishrei, 5778 3 14th of Tishrei, 5778 4 15th of Tishrei, 5778 5 16th of Tishrei, 5778 6 17th of Tishrei, 5778 7 Erev Sukkot Sukkot_1 Sukkot_2 23rd of Tishrei, 5778 13 18th of Tishrei, 5778 8 19th of Tishrei, 5778 9 20th of Tishrei, 5778 10 21st of Tishrei, 5778 11 22nd of Tishrei, 5778 12 24th of Tishrei, 5778 14 Simcha Sukkot_3 Sukkot_4 Sukkot_5 Sukkot_6 Sukkot_7 B’reishit Shmini Atzeret Torah 25th of Tishrei, 5778 15 26th of Tishrei, 5778 16 27th of Tishrei, 5778 17 28th of Tishrei, 5778 18 29th of Tishrei, 5778 19 30th of Tishrei, 5778 20 1st of Cheshvan, 21 Erev Rosh Chodesh 5778 Noah Day 2 2nd of Cheshvan, 22 3rd of Cheshvan, 23 4th of Cheshvan, 24 5th of Cheshvan, 25 6th of Cheshvan, 26 7th of Cheshvan, 27 8th of Cheshvan, 28 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 Lech-Lecha 9th of Cheshvan, 29 10th of Cheshvan, 30 11th of Cheshvan, 31 5778 5778 5778 The month of Cheshvan is the second month of the period of autumn. The tribe corresponding to the month of autumn is Manasseh. Every year we have access to a double portion as we align with Elohim (G-d) during the autumn season. Historically the month of Cheshvan is the month that the flood began and ended. When the waters assuaged and the fountains of the deep were stopped, humanity was given a new lease on life on the earth through Noah and his family. G-d had chosen to destroy His creation because man had become so wicked that his imagination was only evil continually. Mankind had chosen to pursue only evil and turn away from his created purpose, which is to be the dwelling of G-d and establish His image on the earth. http://freedomhouseac.com T November 2017 Cheshvan 5778 – Kislev 5778 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 12th of Cheshvan, 1 13th of Cheshvan, 2 14th of Cheshvan, 3 15th of Cheshvan, 4 5778 5778 5778 5778 Vayeira 16th of Cheshvan, 5 17th of Cheshvan, 6 18th of Cheshvan, 7 19th of Cheshvan, 8 20th of Cheshvan, 9 21st of Cheshvan, 10 22nd of Cheshvan, 11 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 Chayei Sarah 23rd of Cheshvan, 12 24th of Cheshvan, 13 25th of Cheshvan, 14 26th of Cheshvan, 15 27th of Cheshvan, 16 28th of Cheshvan, 17 29th of Cheshvan, 18 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 Toldot Erev Rosh Chodesh 1st of Kislev, 19 2nd of Kislev, 20 3rd of Kislev, 21 4th of Kislev, 22 5th of Kislev, 23 6th of Kislev, 24 7th of Kislev, 25 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 Vayetze 8th of Kislev, 26 9th of Kislev, 27 10th of Kislev, 28 11th of Kislev, 29 12th of Kislev, 30 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 The month of Kislev is the third month of the period of autumn. The tribe corresponding to the month of autumn are Benjamin. Kislev is also linked with the Tribe of Benjamin, who was Jacob’s second son born to Rachel. When Benjamin was born his mother in her dying breath named him Benoni, which means son of sorrow. Jacob renamed him Benjamin, which means son of the right hand or son of strength. When Jacob blessed him he said, “Benjamin shall ravine as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil.” When Moses blessed him he said, “The beloved of Elohim (G-d) shall dwell in safety by him; and Elohim (G-d) shall cover him all day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.” During this month we have the opportunity to be renewed in faith and enter into a new level of rest knowing that our G-d is able to supply our needs according to His riches and glory. When King David found himself ,I have taken refuge; Let me never be ashamed; Deliver me in Your righteousness. Incline Your ear to me ,יהוה excommunicated from the common wealth of Israel and running for his life after being anointed King he said, “In You, O Deliver me speedily; Be a rock of refuge to me, A house of defense to save me. For You are my rock and my stronghold; For Your Name’s sake lead me and guide me. Bring me out of the net which they have hidden for me, For You Ěl of truth. ”. The actions of others may have an effect on our quality of life but if we trust in Elohim (G-d) we will find ourselves in the place of יהוה are my stronghold. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O wholeness. http://freedomhouseac.com T December 2017 Kislev 5778 – Tevet 5778 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 13th of Kislev, 1 14th of Kislev, 2 5778 5778 Vayishlach 15th of Kislev, 3 16th of Kislev, 4 17th of Kislev, 5 18th of Kislev, 6 19th of Kislev, 7 20th of Kislev, 8 21st of Kislev, 9 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 Vayeshev 22nd of Kislev, 10 23rd of Kislev, 11 24th of Kislev, 12 25th of Kislev, 13 26th of Kislev, 14 27th of Kislev, 15 28th of Kislev, 16 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 Erev Chanukah_1 Chanukah_2 Chanukah_3 Miketz Chanukah Chanukah_4 29th of Kislev, 17 30th of Kislev, 18 1st of Tevet, 19 2nd of Tevet, 20 3rd of Tevet, 21 4th of Tevet, 22 5th of Tevet, 23 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 Chanukah_5 Erev Rosh Chanukah_8 Vayigash Chodesh Chanukah_7 Chanukah_6 6th of Tevet, 24 7th of Tevet, 25 8th of Tevet, 26 9th of Tevet, 27 10th of Tevet, 28 11th of Tevet, 29 12th of Tevet, 30 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 5778 Vayechi 13th of Tevet, 31 The month of Tevet is the first month of the winter season. The tribe corresponding to this month of winter is Dan. Every year during the winter season 5778 we have an opportunity to subdue our carnal nature, see what we have not seen and allow Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) to empower us to judge all things correctly. This is so important because it allows us to finish this season of blessing well and position ourselves to begin a new cycle of G-d’s blessing again during Pesach (Passover). Tevet is linked with the Tribe of Dan, who was Jacob’s first son born to Bilhah Rachel’s handmaid and his fifth born son overall. When Dan was born Rachel said, “G-d hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son”, as such his name means a judge. • The Maternal Effect on the Twelve Tribes of Israel1
97 The Maternal Effect on the 1 Twelve Tribes of Israel By: NACHMAN COHEN Introduction The thesis of this treatise is that the character of the twelve sons of Ya‘akov was determined by the disposition and perspective of their mothers at the time of their birth.2 We will show how the mothers’ changing attitudes affected their biological and surrogate children and how these characteristics carried forward to their descendants who became the Twelve Tribes of Israel.3 A study of the Torah quickly reveals that we know very little about the sons of Ya‘akov. Seven of the twelve sons are completely silent throughout the Humash. Nothing is heard from Dan, Naftali, Gad, Asher, Yissakhar, Zevulun, and Binyamin. The pronounce- ments of Re’uven, Shimon and Levi are scant, although we are made aware of several of their important decisions and actions. The sons we know the most about are Yehudah and Yosef. 1 This article was first presented as a memorial lecture for my good friend, Michael Schrek, z”l, © Nachman Cohen, 2007. 2 This is not say that Ya‘akov had no influence on the development of the tribe. However, this is beyond the scope of this essay. 3 This essay is for the most part limited to the discussion of the tribes as they are discussed in the Humash. It does not discuss what befell the tribes once they entered the Land of Israel. ________________________________________________________ Nachman Cohen is Director of Torah Lishmah Institute, Founding Rabbi of Young Israel Ohab Zedek, Chairman of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists, and Research Professor at RIETS where he is the editor of the Encyclopedia of Talmudic Disputes and Perspectives.

C-MATS Question: What were the final words of Moses? These final words of Moses are a combination of blessing and prophecy, in which he blesses each tribe according to its national responsibilities and individual greatness. Moses' blessings were a continuation of Jacob's, as if to say that the tribes were blessed at the beginning of their national existence and again as they were about to begin life in Israel. Moses directed his blessings to each of the tribes individually, since the welfare of each tribe depended upon that of the others, and the collective welfare of the nation depended upon the success of them all (Pesikta). came from Sinai and from Seir He dawned on them; He shined forth from יהוה ,And he (Moses) said 2 Mount Paran and He came with ten thousands of holy ones: from His right hand went a fiery commandment for them. came to Israel from Seir and יהוה ?present the Torah to the Israelites יהוה Question: How did had offered the Torah to the descendants of יהוה Paran, which, as the Midrash records, recalls that Esau, who dwelled in Seir, and to the Ishmaelites, who dwelled in Paran, both of whom refused to accept the Torah because it prohibited their predilections to kill and steal. • The Period of the Judges
THE PERIOD OF THE JUDGES As stated earlier, the Exodus took place c. 1446 B. C. and the conquest of the land began c. 1406 B. C. According to the Bible, the region of Sidon was conquered by the tribe of Asher, identified with 'Aziru' mentioned in the el–Amarna tablets as having conquered this region. We may conclude that according both these sources, the region of Sidon must have been an Israelite one. Yet the Bible appears to contradict our conclusion by its narratives about Hiram king of Zor (Tyre) and Ahab who marries Jezebel, the daughter of Etbaal, king of the Sidonians; about David and Solomon and others who" reigned over all Israel", excluding Sidon. It is puzzling that after the war waged by Asher in the region of Sidon (mentioned in the book of Judges), the Bible does not mention any other war between the Tyrians or Sidonians and the Israelites, whereas many wars of the Israelite tribes against the Philistines, Amorites, Moabites, etc. are mentioned repeatedly. Moreover, when David ascends the throne, a strong friendship develop between Sidon and Israel David is depicted in the Bible as an ambitious man, a warrior and a conqueror, a man whom God does not choose to build the Temple because his hands "shed blood abundantly".1 It is strange that such a man does not go to war against Tyre and Sidon in spite of the fact that these were two important and rich harbour cities. Furthermore, he is a personal friend of king Hiram, and Solomon his successor even enlarges upon this friendship.
