Feedback to the Coober Pedy Regional Times strongly suggests that abuses of public office, including the potential targetting of individuals would continue from inside local government settings along with ongoing difficulties navigating the coloured tape of bureaucracy for residents choosing to lodge their concerns with the OPI.

Many residents are elderly, ethnic, or/and have low literacy levels with no access to assistance with lodging genuine complaints or concerns. This failure in our system could equate to severe frustration, even torture for some individuals who are deserving of a peaceful retirement or similar.

The growing lack of accountability in public office, along with the potential for facing cross agency collusion and other conflicts of interest, amongst the remedies, killed community confidence by the end of the evening.

Complete Personnel has been working with the District Council of Coober Pedy to professionally prune all of the fruiting trees at the Olive Grove, between the oval and the highway.

Participants of the programme have been able to meet their Work for the Dole obligations whilst receiving on- the-job training in irrigation maintenance, orchard pruning, job readiness and various tickets of accreditation.

Under the careful supervision of WFD Supervisor Coober Pedy Olive Grove looking good again under the supervision of Duncan McLaren, Duncan McLaren and instruction of local opal miner Andreas Skarmoutsos and the Work for the Dole Team and olive expert, Andreas Skarmoutsos, participants have been carefully and expertly pruning the olive trees.

With a deadline of the end of July, after which the trees may no longer be cut, work has been in full swing to complete the not inconsiderable task of pruning all of the fruiting trees at the grove. Thanks to the diligence and hard work of the programme’s participants they are well on target to do so.

Complete Personnel’s supervisor, Duncan McLaren, said “I am genuinely impressed by the commitment the participants have shown for the task that we were given.

Being locals, I think the participants liked the fact that this task had a highly visible outcome and was of a benefit to their community. They have done an enormous amount of work and I can only describe this project as a complete success.”

According to Andreas Skarmoutsos, the trees needed pruning because if left un-pruned, the lower and outer branches die off and the tree continues to grow vertically upward. This then makes harvest in the future increasingly difficult. “Eventually, you would need a cherry picker crane to get the olives and even then, you would get much less fruit.”

The pruning ensures the fruit has room and light to grow and does so at a height that is convenient for people to harvest. Under the careful supervision of WFD Supervisor Duncan McLaren and instruction of local opal miner and olive expert, Andreas Skarmoutsos, participants have been carefully and Thanks to this year’s pruning programme, next seasons expertly pruning the olive trees. olives should be healthy and give an average yield, but the following year will yield a bumper harvest. People should start planning what they will do with the abundant, high quality table olives they will have access to.

Just out of interest, did you know the Olive Tree was native to Asia Minor and spread from the fertile crescent to the rest of the Mediterranean basin over 6,000 years ago. It is among the oldest known cultivated trees in the world - arguably being cultivated before the written language was invented. We know it was being grown on Crete by 3,000 BC, by the Minoan Civilization.

Page 4 Coober Pedy Regional Times Thursday 25 July 2019 Keeping the community informed TAFE SA to maintain training presence at Coober Pedy

Following a thorough review of education and training delivery requirements, TAFE SA will maintain training activity at its Coober Pedy Campus.

After a process of consultation with staff and engagement with key stakeholders and the wider community, TAFE SA has completed its review of how training is delivered at the Coober Pedy Campus to meet the needs of local students, the community and industry.

Following this review, TAFE SA will maintain a more efficient training presence at the Coober Pedy Campus along with the sites at Urrbrae, Wudinna, and Roxby Downs Campuses albeit with a reduced footprint on campus.

TAFE SA Director Aboriginal Access Centre, Marg Mibus, said that the revised plans for the campus provided a positive outcome for students and the local community.

“TAFE SA will maintain a presence at the Coober Pedy Campus with a smaller footprint to achieve the Government’s savings targets,” Ms Mibus said.
