This section gives you information about all the state-funded schools in Wandsworth. As well as general details such as the size and location of each school, it also gives you their admission criteria. These tell you how schools decide who to offer places to if they have more applications than they can accept. Please read the admission criteria carefully, because they will give you an idea of whether or not your child is likely to be offered a place at a school of your choice. If you need any more advice you can either ring Pupil Services or the school concerned. There is a separate booklet for information on independent schools. If you need a copy please ring Pupil Services and ask for ‘Choose an Independent School’.

Ashcroft Technology Academy

Ashcroft Technology Academy is a state-funded school, independent of local authority control. The Academy is sponsored by Lord Ashcroft, KCMG, who was also the founder sponsor of ADT College. Building on the highly successful tradition and reputation of ADT College, Ashcroft Academy, with £14 million of new buildings and refurbishment, offers new and wider opportunities to achieve the highest possible standards of learning for our students. The Trustees of the Academy are responsible for the arrangements for admitting children. The Academy will admit 210 students in 2010. Up to 21 places will be offered to children who show aptitude for Technology. After the admission of the specialist places and students with a Statement of Special Educational Needs where the Academy is the named school, the remainder of the places will be offered to children from across the full range of ability with priority given to those in public care, those with siblings and then to those living nearest to the Academy.

Once the specialist places have been allocated and places have been allocated to children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs in which the Academy is the named school, the remaining places will be allocated on the basis of the oversubscription criteria detailed below, so that equal numbers of applicants are admitted from each band.* The criteria will be applied to applicants in each band in the order set out below: 1. Children in public care (A child in the care of a local authority or provided with accommodation by that authority under section 22 of the Children Act 1989). 2. Students whose siblings currently attend the Academy and who will continue to do so on the date of admission. For admission purposes a sibling is defined as being a full brother or sister, a half/step brother or sister living at the same address, a child living as part of the family by reason of a court order, or a child placed with foster carers as a result of being looked after by a local authority. 3. Students living nearest to the Academy using the shortest walking route with street lighting from the child’s home to the Academy, as measured by the Wandsworth Council Geographical Information System. Where there are insufficient applicants remaining to fill the available places within any band, places will be allocated alternately from adjacent bands. * Where the number of places remaining is not equally divisible by five, an additional place will be allocated in one or more bands.

Appeal arrangements Applicants refused a place at the school will have the right to appeal against the decision to an independent admission appeal panel established under the School Standards & Framework Act 1998.

Battersea Park School Battersea Park School is the new name for Battersea Technology College, which became a Foundation school in January 2009. There are nearly 700 boys and girls aged 11-18 on roll. The school has consistently been recognised as one of the most improved schools in the country and each year builds on the improvements to academic achievement, as the rising percentages of GCSE passes show. The school has performing arts school status and has newly refurbished performing arts spaces. The school has recently won two awards from the Specialist Schools Trust for sustained improvement of academic results. Since January 2009, the governors of the school have been responsible for the arrangements for admitting children. The school will admit 150 pupils in September 2010. All places are offered to children across the full range of ability, with priority given to siblings and to those who live nearest to the school.

Section four Wandsworth Year 6 Test

Children in Wandsworth primary schools have taken a general ability test in Year 6 for a number of years. Children used to take separate tests at many of Wandsworth’s secondary schools as part of the application process. Several years ago the council introduced a single test (in three parts) to replace all other tests and to make arrangements less demanding for children and parents. In this section we hope to answer the questions you may have about the Wandsworth Year 6 Test which is an important part of the transfer process for your child.
