Universidad de Granada. 2010/2011 Firma de aprobación………………………………………….. ABSTRACT Italian society is still facing an enormous “orgasm gap” in (hetero) sexual relations: according to a very recent survey (Barbagli and co., 2010) only a minority of women reach an orgasm in every sexual intercourse, in contrast with the vast majority of men; this is true even in the younger generations. I take the lack of orgasm as a starting point for studying how sexual behaviours are still under the reign of patriarchy, imposing male standards that privilege male pleasure at the expense of female. My research therefore aims to analyze from a feminist perspective the agency of young women in reaching an orgasm during a (hetero) sexual relation. Through the use of a “feminist objectivity” and a qualitative methodology I have conducted eight semi-structured in-depth interviews with young women in Bologna, Italy. In particular I have identified a series of widespread social discourse that prevent women from choosing orgasm, while causing them to live their sexuality with high doses of insecurity and inhibition.

Are Women Bad at Orgasms? Understanding the Gender Gap By Lisa Wade, PhD DISCLOSURE This draft may not match the final draft. CITATION Wade, Lisa. 2015. Are Women Bad at Orgasms? Understanding the Gender Gap. Pp. 227-237 in Gender, Sex, and Politics: In the Streets and Between the Sheets in the 21st Century, edited by Shira Tarrant. New York: Routledge. ABSTRACT Women who have sex with men have about one orgasm for every three her partner enjoys. We call this the “orgasm gap,” a persistent average difference in the frequency of orgasm for men and women who have heterosexual sex. In this paper, I discredit one common explanation for this gap—the idea that women are somehow bad at orgasms—and offer alternative explanations for the gendered asymmetry in this one type of sexual pleasure: a lack of knowledge, the de- prioritization of female sexual pleasure, sexual objectification and self-objectification, and the coital imperative in the sexual script. 1 Are Women Bad at Orgasms? Understanding the Gender Gap By Lisa Wade, PhD Women who have sex with men have about one orgasm for every three her partner enjoys.i We call this the “orgasm gap,” a persistent average difference in the frequency of orgasm for men and women who have heterosexual sex. I want to discredit one common explanation for this gap—the idea that women are somehow bad at orgasms—and offer alternative explanations for the gendered asymmetry in this one type of sexual pleasure. The common cultural narrative about men’s orgasms is that, if anything, they arrive too easily and too quickly.

  • The Social Construction of Sexual Interaction in Heterosexual Relationships: a Qualitative Analysis
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Kathleen Marie Greaves for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Human Development and Family Studies presented on July 12. 2000. Title: The Social Construction of Sexual Interaction in Heterosexual Relationships: A Qualitative Analysis. Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: Anisa M. Zvonkovic The present study examined the process by which couples, in the context of a heterosexual romantic relationship, participate in sexual activity. As they did so, their interactions helped to construct their relationship. Social construction theory and the gender perspective provided the theoretical foundation for this qualitative research. Nine heterosexual couples were recruited primarily through an introductory course in human sexuality. Each member of these nine couples was interviewed separately using a qualitative, semistructured interview format. Each interview lasted about an hour and questions focused on behavioral and sexual expectations for women and men in romantic relationships. Other areas examined included prior dating relationships and sexual experiences, sexual activity in the present relationship, comfort and satisfaction with the specific sexual experiences in the current relationship, satisfaction with their sexual relationship, and general relationship satisfaction. Qualitative data analysis techniques were used to arrive at five major themes. Results illustrated how women and men constructed notions of gender- appropriate sexual interaction as they participated in sexual activity in their relationship. First, participants' views of sexuality, the meanings they attached to sexual acts, their expectations of specific sexual encounters and of sexual relationships in general, and the choices they made in the navigation process were often based upon social and cultural expectations of what sex is.

Review of A Politically Incorrect Feminist by Phyllis Chesler Abstract Phyllis Chesler’s new memoir, A Politically Incorrect Feminist (St. Martin's Press, 2018), spans almost fifty years of second-wave feminism. She names 100s of women, both famous and virtually unknown today who took part in the awakening and growing women’s movement, marching, sitting-in, writing and organizing since the 1960’s. It is the personal life story of one of the earliest feminist authors and political activists of the second- wave, the author of Women and Madness and 17 other books. Chelser discusses major issues of the time and provides an insider’s view of many of the feminism’s most significant public events.

  • Orgasm in America
Orgasm in America: Current Beliefs and Practices A Loveology University Study by Leanna Wolfe, PhD Abstract “Orgasm in America: Current Beliefs and Practices” examines the cultural penetration of issues raised by scientists, sexologists and feminists. Based on a 27-question Internet survey of 1,053 men and women, gender, age and cultural differences figure strongly in performance, incidence of multiple orgasm, faking of orgasm, simultaneous orgasm via penile vaginal intercourse and means by which orgasm can be achieved and enhanced. Female respondents in their middle years (30-35) were the most likely to fake orgasm with their partners and had the lowest levels of gender alignment in reporting the incidence of simultaneous orgasm. Our respondents overwhelmingly believe there is a difference between clitoral and vaginal orgasms (64.3% male and 73% female) while our oldest respondents (36-69) were the least likely to believe that it’s possible for females to reach orgasm without direct clitoral stimulation (76.1% male and 77.2% female). Orgasmic enhancements were highly gender-based except for those who practice tantric sex (16.4% male and 17.4% female). High gender differentiations were seen with use of stop-start techniques (70.6% of males vs. 40.3% of females) and activation of the pubococcygeus muscle (25.6% males vs. 60.2% females). Being a voluntary survey that attracted sexual explorers there were impressively high rates of female ejaculation (46.4%) and non-ejaculatory male orgasm (44.8%). Nearly half (46%) agreed that sex could be satisfying without orgasm with another 43.7% claiming “it depends” on things like emotional connection, love and rewarding touch.
