The customers talked and played, held trips and meetings, the licensees had their own stories, and the buildings had experienced many changes. These thoughts spurred me on to find out more. Obviously I had to restrict my field; Black Country pubs became my theme, because that is where I lived and worked. Many of the pubs I remembered from the late 1960’s, when I was legally allowed to drink in them, had disappeared or were in the process of doing so. My plan was to collect any information I could from any sources available. Around that time the Black Country Bugle first appeared; I have never missed an issue, and have found the contents and letters invaluable. I then started to visit the archives of the Black Country boroughs. Directories were another invaluable source for licensees’ names, enabling me to build up lists. The censuses, church registers and licensing minutes for some areas, also were consulted. Newspaper articles provided many items of human interest (eg. inquests, crimes, civic matters, industrial relations), which would be of value not only to a pub historian, but to local and social historians and genealogists alike. With the advances in technology in mind, I decided the opportunity of releasing my entire archive digitally, rather than mere selections as magazine articles or as a book, was too good to miss.

My Uncle (Tim Thomas) took to me the game, Tim has supported Shrewsbury Town for over a period of 65 years and is still keen as ever. This was my third visit to the Montgomery Waters Meadow, home of Shrewsbury Town Football Club. My first visit came on 5th April 2016 where I watched the Shropshire Senior Cup Final between Shrewsbury Town and AFC Telford United. The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes with Shrewsbury winning the penalty shootout 3-2 to lift the trophy. My second visit came on 2nd May 2017 where I watched the Shropshire Premier Cup Final between Shawbury United and Market Drayton Town, the winners that day were Market Drayton by one goal to nil. My nephew Jimmy joined me for the game, this was his second taste of groundhopping within a month after he came with me to watch Carno 0-3 Caersws on 29th December 2018. I also attended the game with my father-in-law Dave and two brother-in-law’s Damian and Jamie, Damian’s son (my nephew) Billy also came to watch.

    MACCLESFIELD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB RETURN TO THE NON-LEAGUE SCENE CHAPTER ONE Season 2012-2013 ALL THE KING’S MEN BY GEOFFREY KNIGHTS A FRESH START Completing the 2011-12 season in bottom position in the npower League 2, Macclesfield were relegated along with Hereford United to the National Conference, more commonly known as the Blue Square Premier League, after 15 interesting seasons as a member of the Football League. The make-up of the Conference was somewhat different to the league which the club left in 1997 when the Silkmen were a successful team, winning the Conference Championship twice and picking up silverware in Cup competitions on a regular basis. The replacement of the one-up-one down system with two clubs moving in each direction has seen several former Football League teams remaining in the Conference for many years providing a very competitive league. BEHIND THE SCENES During the close season there is always a lot of activity behind the scenes to ensure that the club are fully prepared for the start of the forthcoming season together with the introduction of new initiatives. Changes in staff took place: Glyn Chamberlain, assistant manager, left the club as did the ticket office manager, Robert Stirling, and with the catering franchised out (see below), senior catering staff took the opportunity to leave the club for pastures new, however, the club’s excellent chef remained, and the personable Dean Holmes, who managed the club’s reception desk so well, moved to a social carer’s position. Both Robert and Dean often returned on match days during the 2012-13 season to assist.
