He came through the youth ranks at Everton and later played for Hull City (on loan), Crawley Town, Reading and Blackburn Rovers. Following his release by Blackburn, Akpan signed a one-year contract with Burton ONE TO Albion in July 2017. WATCH Though born in England, he represents Nigeria at international level. 43 Manager Nigel Clough Born in Sunderland and raised in Derby, Clough is most notable for his time as a player at Nottingham Forest, where he played over 400 times in league, cup and European matches in two separate spells, mostly under the managership of his father and Boro legend Brian, and scored 131 goals throughout his career, making him the second highest scorer in the club’s history. He subsequently had spells with Liverpool, Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday before moving into non-league football at the age of 32 when he became player-manager with then Southern League Premier Division side Burton Albion in 1998. Over the next decade, during half of which he continued to play a regular role on the field, Clough took Burton up from the seventh tier of the English football league system to the brink of promotion to League Two before leaving halfway through the 2008–09 season to follow in his father’s footsteps and take over at Derby County, where he served for four years until September 2013.

  • WEDNESBURY (Inc
HITCHMOUGH’S BLACK COUNTRY PUBS WEDNESBURY (Inc. Kings Hill, Mesty Croft) 3rd. Edition - © 2014 Tony Hitchmough. All Rights Reserved www.longpull.co.uk INTRODUCTION Well over 40 years ago, I began to notice that the English public house was more than just a building in which people drank. The customers talked and played, held trips and meetings, the licensees had their own stories, and the buildings had experienced many changes. These thoughts spurred me on to find out more. Obviously I had to restrict my field; Black Country pubs became my theme, because that is where I lived and worked. Many of the pubs I remembered from the late 1960’s, when I was legally allowed to drink in them, had disappeared or were in the process of doing so. My plan was to collect any information I could from any sources available. Around that time the Black Country Bugle first appeared; I have never missed an issue, and have found the contents and letters invaluable. I then started to visit the archives of the Black Country boroughs. Directories were another invaluable source for licensees’ names, enabling me to build up lists. The censuses, church registers and licensing minutes for some areas, also were consulted. Newspaper articles provided many items of human interest (eg. inquests, crimes, civic matters, industrial relations), which would be of value not only to a pub historian, but to local and social historians and genealogists alike. With the advances in technology in mind, I decided the opportunity of releasing my entire archive digitally, rather than mere selections as magazine articles or as a book, was too good to miss.

  • John Mackenzie, I Have Been Connected with the Club Approaching 49 Or 50 Years Both As a Fan and As a Volunteer
File: BMD John Mackenzie complete Duration: 1:10:40 Date: 04/08/2016 Typist: 685 START AUDIO John Mackenzie: John Mackenzie, I have been connected with the club approaching 49 or 50 years both as a fan and as a volunteer. In the early days of Stevenage Town I was actually on the management committee of Stevenage Town. Interviewer: Can you talk to us about the beginning of the football club, what was that like? John Mackenzie: The beginning I moved to Stevenage from Scotland because of my father’s work back in 1962, as far as I can remember that was the date. I remember Stevenage hadn’t moved from where the station is now to Broadhall Way. I remember coming to the very first game here I think it was against Canterbury City in the Southern League, I believe that was in about ‘63. I have been connected and coming to the games ever since apart from the obvious seasons when there was no club here because Stevenage Town and Stevenage Athletic both went bankrupt. Mr [Revolter 0:01:18] dug the pitch up, so for X number of years the ground lay derelict until a group of fans started up Stevenage Borough and took up Stevenage Borough. I have been coming from the very beginning when we played on King George’s playing field until today. 1 Interviewer: Can you remember the old ground next to the railway station, can you describe to me what that looked like? John Mackenzie: I can vaguely remember it. When I moved to Stevenage the new ground had been built, but obviously nobody played on it until the ground settled down.

  • 2021 Book News Welcome to Our 2021 Book News
2021 Book News Welcome to our 2021 Book News. As we come towards the end of a very strange year we hope that you’ve managed to get this far relatively unscathed. It’s been a very challenging time for us all and we’re just relieved that, so far, we’re mostly all in one piece. While we were closed over lockdown, Mark took on the challenge of digitalising some of Venture’s back catalogue producing over 20 downloadable books of some of our most popular titles. Thanks to the kind donations of our customers we managed to raise over £3000 for The Christie which was then matched pound for pound by a very good friend taking the total to almost £7000. There is still time to donate and download these books, just click on the downloads page on our website for the full list. We’re still operating with reduced numbers in the building at any one time. We’ve re-organised our schedules for packers and office staff to enable us to get orders out as fast as we can, but we’re also relying on carriers and suppliers. Many of the publishers whose titles we stock are small societies or one-man operations so please be aware of the longer lead times when placing orders for Christmas presents. The last posting dates for Christmas are listed on page 63 along with all the updates in light of the current Covid situation and also the impending Brexit deadline. In particular, please note the change to our order and payment processing which was introduced on 1st July 2020.
