HITCHMOUGH’S BLACK COUNTRY PUBS WEDNESBURY (Inc. Kings Hill, Mesty Croft) 3rd. Edition - © 2014 Tony Hitchmough. All Rights Reserved www.longpull.co.uk INTRODUCTION Well over 40 years ago, I began to notice that the English public house was more than just a building in which people drank. The customers talked and played, held trips and meetings, the licensees had their own stories, and the buildings had experienced many changes. These thoughts spurred me on to find out more. Obviously I had to restrict my field; Black Country pubs became my theme, because that is where I lived and worked. Many of the pubs I remembered from the late 1960’s, when I was legally allowed to drink in them, had disappeared or were in the process of doing so. My plan was to collect any information I could from any sources available. Around that time the Black Country Bugle first appeared; I have never missed an issue, and have found the contents and letters invaluable. I then started to visit the archives of the Black Country boroughs. Directories were another invaluable source for licensees’ names, enabling me to build up lists. The censuses, church registers and licensing minutes for some areas, also were consulted. Newspaper articles provided many items of human interest (eg. inquests, crimes, civic matters, industrial relations), which would be of value not only to a pub historian, but to local and social historians and genealogists alike. With the advances in technology in mind, I decided the opportunity of releasing my entire archive digitally, rather than mere selections as magazine articles or as a book, was too good to miss.

Date: 26.01.2019 Ground: Revisit Match: 22 (2018/2019 season) Venue: Montgomery Waters Meadow Teams: Shrewsbury Town V Wolverhampton Wanderers Competition: FA Cup 4th Round Admission: £20 Final Score: 2-2 ( H/T 0-0 ) Referee: Roger East Attendance: 9503 Mileage to venue and return: 38.6 Programme: £3 Introduction The first game of football that I ever attended was on 18th April 1987, aged six years old. I to the The Gay Meadow that day, the former home of Shrewsbury Town and watched them beat Stoke City 4-1 in front of a crowd of 6,777. My Uncle (Tim Thomas) took to me the game, Tim has supported Shrewsbury Town for over a period of 65 years and is still keen as ever. This was my third visit to the Montgomery Waters Meadow, home of Shrewsbury Town Football Club. My first visit came on 5th April 2016 where I watched the Shropshire Senior Cup Final between Shrewsbury Town and AFC Telford United. The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes with Shrewsbury winning the penalty shootout 3-2 to lift the trophy. My second visit came on 2nd May 2017 where I watched the Shropshire Premier Cup Final between Shawbury United and Market Drayton Town, the winners that day were Market Drayton by one goal to nil. My nephew Jimmy joined me for the game, this was his second taste of groundhopping within a month after he came with me to watch Carno 0-3 Caersws on 29th December 2018. I also attended the game with my father-in-law Dave and two brother-in-law’s Damian and Jamie, Damian’s son (my nephew) Billy also came to watch.

  • MACCLESFIELD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB Penalty Shoot-Outs the First Penalty Shoot-Out in an English Professional Match Took Place in 19
MACCLESFIELD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB Penalty Shoot-outs The first penalty shoot-out in an English professional match took place in 1970 at Boothferry Park, Hull between Hull City and Manchester United in the semi-final of the Watney Cup. The shoot-out was won by Manchester United with George Best the first to take a kick and Denis Law was the first player to miss. Since then the use of a penalty shoot-out has been extended widely to settle cup competition matches. Macclesfield Town successfully completed 10 consecutive penalty shoot-outs but their unbeaten record was broken on 4 December 2018 when they lost 3-5 to Newcastle United Under 21s in the Second Round of the Checkatrade Trophy. Since then they have won one and lost one. 25 Nov 1992 Chesterfield FA Cup – First Round replay 2-2 AET Won 3-2 on penalties Chesterfield Macclesfield Town Turnbull Mitchell Francis Bimson Shepherd (Penalty scorers) (Penalty scorers) Following a 0-0 draw at the Moss Rose on 14 November 1992 in front of a crowd of 3063, non-league Macclesfield Town travelled to EFL side Chesterfield on a wet Tuesday evening. Macclesfield’s Richie Mitchell put the Silkmen ahead in the fourth minute but the home side equalised just before half time. No goals were scored in the second half with the score remaining 1-1 after 90 minutes. During the first period of extra time Richie Mitchell gave Macclesfield the lead in the 103rd minute but Chesterfield drew level for a second time seconds before the conclusion of the second Richie Mitchell period of extra time.

  • Macclesfield Town Football Club Return to the Non-League Scene Chapter
MACCLESFIELD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB RETURN TO THE NON-LEAGUE SCENE CHAPTER TWO Season 2013-2014 JOHN’S IN CHARGE BY GEOFFREY KNIGHTS OVERVIEW The appointment of John Askey as manager with Efe Sodje as his assistant was warmly welcomed by the fans. John, who has made more appearances for the Silkmen than any other player, is held in very high esteem by the supporters and officials. Efe Sodje, another legend having scored the Silkmen’s first Football League goal, is well respected and has the ability to gain sponsorship deals. As a management team they worked wonders on a restricted budget reaching the third round of the FA Cup, with the team completing the season in a mid-table position in the Skrill Premier League. It was a contrasting scene off the field of play with a difficult financial position to be managed, possible takeover moves said to be in the pipeline throughout the season, outstanding debts and the Registrar turning aside the club’s application to convert to a Community Interest Club, all leading to a feeling of uncertainty for everyone connected to the club. On the positive side, owner Amar Alkadhi invested a further £50,000 during the season and the Cheshire East Council came to the rescue when they purchased the freehold of the Moss Rose providing a cash injection which helped to reduce the outstanding debt. As always, the main purpose of this chapter is to record the achievements of the football team, but a summary of the major off-field events is also included to provide as fuller a picture as possible.
