Windsor F.C. v Highmoor Ibis Saturday 14th October 2017 Kick Off 3:00pm Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Stag Meadow for today’s Hellenic League Premier Division match against Highmoor Ibis.

I extend a warm welcome to our visitors from Reading and trust all have had a decent journey along the M4.

I offer that welcome to our matchday officials also, and hope Messrs Jacobs, Middleton & Kaya enjoy the couple of hours they have with us in The Great Park.

We face Highmoor only seven days after our previous meeting. The hope is we have learnt from any mistakes made and can improve on our 2-0 victory at the Rivermoor. It would make for a better match if both teams could finish the game with 11 players each!

After today we go on the road and by the time we get back here to Stag Meadow the Christmas lights will be up in Peascod Street! There are far too many away games to give you all the travel information, so today’s issue has details on Tuesday nights visit to Abingdon only.

For info on the remainder of away matches in October, keep your eye on the football club Twitter page @windsorfc

Enjoy today’s game and don’t be afraid to jump in the car and follow the boys on the road. Matt

Our last two home games have been disappointing in relation to zero points and no goals scored. Points dropped at home are a bitter pill to swallow, but we only have ourselves to blame.

If we start with the Longlevens game, I think that their collective desire to win the match was bigger than ours and, for me, the manner of the defeat was the most disappointing aspect.

We can look at the amount of possession that we had but we never really threatened their keeper, chances were difficult to come by throughout the 90 minutes and we should have defended our goal better when asked to.

What was evident throughout the two home games was the standard of refereeing. The guy in the middle against Longlevens was below par, and the guy who took charge of the Royal Wootton Bassett match was simply awful.

I cannot understand some of the decisions that we have witnessed, none more so than the sending off for Barry!

The referee should be embarrassed by his decision making and his inability to read the style of all the players on the pitch. I understand that we all have off days, but are the individuals fit for purpose in the first place?

Still, we will continue to take our medicine and stride on .

It was important to get back to winning ways quickly after the two losses and the visit to Highmoor Ibis presented us with that opportunity. The only objective was to win the game, and we were prepared for extra time and penalties, if required, as long as we left there with the win.

Our performance was certainly not pretty, but I could not care less. The guys stuck together and produced a gritty and very determined 90 minutes. Scoring two goals of high quality delighted me, and the clean sheet was pleasing.

As for the game itself, it was an ugly affair with no rhythm, it carried an unhealthy atmosphere throughout, and, for the time being, I am going to leave it there …

This coming Saturday is all about the 3 points, we have lost our last 3 league games and it’s vital that we start collecting the points to get us back within the chasing pack. This league is not easy and we will need to be fully focused and prepared for the battle ahead.

Once again our support was excellent away from home, keep it up guys please!

Respect. It's been banded around in football over recent years. The FA have rolled out initiatives, programmes and campaigns. We've all seen the shirt sleeve logos and centre circle banners?

Respect comes in many forms though, and I'm arguing that themselves are showing little or no respect to clubs at our current level (you could probably pull the level above into that).

Our league fixtures were announced less than 10 days before the scheduled start of the season. Less than 10 days. Think about that.

The phrase "If you fail to prepare then prepare to fail" comes to mind.

Since the fixtures were given to our club secretary I must have seen at least three amendments to the fixture list.

I spotted league fixtures on consecutive days in December and we currently will play one team on consecutive weekends - home and away. That'll be down to the speed at which the league themselves feel they have to put a fixture list together, not having had time to check, re-check and consult.

The league season finishes around the first weekend in May...if clubs are appealing points deductions or ground issues (which tends to be the reasoning behind league constitution delays) after that weekend then the system has failed.

The Football Association needs to show some respect and allow clubs such as ours time to prepare for a season.

Fixture lists, posters, season tickets and programmes all need time to prepare and print. The less time given, the more cost and inconvenience incurred.

It's simply unfair and unnecessary.

Slough Town came from a goal behind to record another win in the Southern League Premier Division on Saturday. Brad Watkins scored the 80th minute winner at Arbor Park. Slough return to second place in the league.

Dean Allen scored two late goals for Flackwell Heath in a spirited 3-3 draw at title chasing Thatcham Town. Dan Rapley had put Flackwell ahead before Thatcham raced into a 3-1 lead.

Marlow were in league cup action and were forced to replay the game on Tuesday evening (10th) following a 0-0 last Saturday with Aveley.

Holyport lost 2-0 at home to Penn & Tylers with Jamie West scoring twice for the visitors. P&T are top of the Division (One East) having played nine matches.

Burnham were bundled out of the Hellenic League Cup by Thame Rangers. The blues losing 1-0 at the Gore.

Maidenhead United collected another point in The National League. In a topsy-turvy match, Maidenhead thought they’d done enough to claim all three points against Aldershot when Harry Pritchard smashed home a penalty late on in front of a crowd of just under two and half thousand. However the visitors nicked an equalizer in the dying seconds. Final score 3-3.

Bracknell Town completed a quick Hellenic League double over City Nomads by following up their 5-0 home win on Saturday with a 5-1 triumph in the return fixture.

Sky Sports and The , have, over the last 25 years, provided football punters with a variety of fast moving, cool looking TV Ads. But, what are the best footie TV Adverts you’ve ever seen though?

Here are just a few to tickle the taste buds and stimulate the memory bank!

John Smith’s “Have It”

This John Smith's classic featuring Peter Kay gave children who couldn't do kick ups a wonderful excuse to have a laugh at everyone else's expense as the iconic "Have It" catchphrase sounded out in playgrounds up and down the country. And the lazy sods never went to get the ball back. Damn you, Kay!

Nike “Good versus Evil”

A bit like a footballing version of Space Jam except with less Bill Murray and more evil. Wait till the end to hear Eric Cantona deliver the ultimate football ad one- liner.

Page 6 – www.thamesmotorgroup.co.uk TV Ads – History of Football

Waddle, Southgate & Pearce “Pizza Hut”

England penalty failures Stuart Pearce, Chris Waddle and Gareth Southgate find that receiving large sums of money to look stupid is actually quite cathartic. Pearce's antithesis-of-RADA voice is the star of this commercial.

Green Cross Code “Keegan”

A 70’s flamboyantly-dressed King Kev takes us back to a bygone age in which men could shout angrily at young boys before putting a tender arm around them and not have to worry about being arrested for either action.

Brian Clough & Peter Shilton “Shredded Wheat”

If ever there was a football man who looked a natural in front of the cameras, it was Brian Clough. Here he sells Shredded Wheat with the aid of his old goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who is tellingly not trusted to deliver a single line.

National League Gateshead appoint ex-Newcastle United man Watson as boss National League side Gateshead have appointed former Newcastle United defender as the club’s new manager.

The 43-year-old replaces former Heed boss , who left the club to take over at League Two strugglers Port Vale last week – with Micky Cummins at the helm during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Barrow.

Watson has an array of coaching experience, having been appointed as Huddersfield Town’s development coach in 2010, teaming up with former Toon teammate , before following Clark to Birmingham City two years later.

The pair were sacked by the Blues in 2014, before Watson finally made his return to coaching last summer, becoming John Askey’s assistant manager at .

Having beaten ex-Hartlepool boss Craig Hignett and Blyth manager Alun Armstrong to the job, Watson has a real task on his hands in what is his first managerial role.

Gateshead are currently languishing 16th in Non- League’s top-tier – their lowest league position since 2013 – following a brilliant 2016-17 campaign, which ultimately ended with a disappointing play-off campaign.

The Tynesiders faithful will be hoping their new boss can turn thinks around quickly in the league, but Watson’s first aim will be to steer his new side past Buxton on Saturday in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The season is underway and started brilliantly for our Under 18 team. The opening match a tough looking trip to Chalfont St Peter. A strong Windsor side, including Gus Bowles, Louis Maggs and Brad Birchmore swept the home side away 4-0.

The boys then followed up that result with an equally impressive 4-0 FA Youth Cup victory over Alton at Stag Meadow.

Racing into a 3-0 lead within 21 minutes, two goals from Dan Roth and an Alton own goal, the result was put beyond all doubt when Jack Hall skipped past five Alton defenders to slot home, sending the healthy crowd home happy.

Hopefully I might see you around the ground at some point this season………Here’s hoping !!

I’ve been watching the International Football this weekend as I sit down to write these notes. I see England have managed to somehow ‘scrape’ their way into the World Cup Finals without losing a game. If that’s scraping then I’d like to see what passes for comfortable according to the so called TV experts……

Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland are all in a fight to try and get into the Play- Offs. IF they get in the Play-Offs, they have to win a two legged shoot-out to get into the finals. Now that is surely scraping it if they do eventually get to Russia !!

How good would that be though. All 4 of the UK Nations making it to Russia for the World Cup. Imagine if all 4 were in a qualifying group together. How awesome would that be ? Smash the Scots, Whip the Welsh and Nail the Northern Irish !!! Roll on the Summer !!

Whats in the news……FLACKWELL HEATH and BREXIT. What fun.

After announcing in my last musing that we had drawn Flackwell Heath away in the next round of the Vase on Saturday 21 October we were quickly informed that the following Saturday 28 October (a date without a match), that a match scheduled for Saturday 2 December, we would travel to Flackwell Heath in a league match.

After our victory in the League Cup last Saturday we were to learn that we had an away draw in the next round at……..yes, Flackwell Heath. I am sure that Saturday 2nd December looks a favourite to be game day.

With matches at Flackwell Heath in the Vase and the League and a trip over to Burnham in between (unless we draw in the Vase) the first team are not at home again until Tuesday 31 October when we play Newport Pagnell Town in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup.

The Youth have been busy of late. In the FA Youth Cup we lost 7-4 after extra time to Buckingham Athletic in a match that was really entertaining with both sides a credit to their clubs. On the Sunday we played in the Berks & Bucks u18 Youth Cup at Farnham Park against Burnham Juniors U18 Lynx Blue. Level 2-2 at 90 minutes a very young Windsor side showed they knew how to score from the spot with keeper Henry Poole making 2 superb saves and even scoring on of the penalties himself.

On Monday the Youth are here at Stag Meadow in the Grant McLellan Cup against Manorcroft United ko 7.30pm. Later in the week our U18s go to CB Hounslow, a new ground opened a few weeks ago and then next Friday the U19s are here at against Maidenhead United ko 2pm.

Today we host Highmoor Ibis in the League, a warm welcome to Martin, Chris and the team. Alan Highmoor Ibis F.C. - History

Highmoor is a small village in South that has a population of less than 300 and is home to a small but very attractive cricket and football ground. Most of the original football team came from the neighbouring villages of Sonning Common, Stoke Row and Wood-cote.

Tracing back through the records, a Highmoor Football Club can be found in existence until just after the war, with the current club being formed in 1966.

Prior to 1990 the club enjoyed little success and in the late 1980’s was very close to extinction as it struggled to fill the 2 teams. It was during this period that the current club secretary, Chris Gallimore, took over and recruited the now Chairman, Martin Law, to become 1st team manager, and between them they assembled a strong squad of players and success was to follow.

As the club progressed through the divisions and into the Reading Senior League they outgrew their original home, and in 2003 proposed a merger with Ibis Football Club based at Scours Lane in Reading. The Ibis FC was formed in 1913 and is the sports and social club of Prudential Assurance Company.

The Ibis name, some say, was because many rowing clubs took the names of water fowl. Others believe it derived from the cry “Come on the IBs” which habitually drowned out the supporters of the OBs in departmental team events. (IB standing for the Industrial Branch and OB standing for the Ordinary Branch of the Prudential).

Since 2001 the club has achieved various successes including winning the Reading Senior League twice, the Maidenhead Norfolkian Senior Cup, the BTC Intermediate and Senior Cups and the Reading Invitation Challenge Cup Senior, as well as the A team winning league and cup competitions.

In the 2010/11 season the 1st team won the Reading Senior League which allowed them to gain promotion to the Hellenic Football League. In 2011/12, competing in it for the first time in the club’s history, Highmoor secured promotion from Hellenic Division 1 East after finishing runners-up, and also came runners-up in the League’s Supplementary Cup and the Reading Invitation Challenge Senior Cup.

In 2011/12 in their inaugural season in the Hellenic Premier further history was written as the team finished a creditable 12th and also competed in the FA Vase for the first time ever.

In 2013/2014 more historical landmarks where reached with the club’s first appearance in the FA Cup and FA Youth Cup and the launch of the Highmoor- IBIS Academy, offering the opportunity for 16–18 year olds to study for a Diploma in Sports Science - a first locally for a football club.

The 1st team came 4th in the Uhlsport Hellenic League, and the Reserve team won the Reading Senior League (the first club ever to have a 1st and reserve team win the Senior league – Step 7)

In 2014/2015 the club achieved the highest finish in it’s history with 2nd place in the Hellenic Premier. Promotion was applied for but as Palmer Park’s turnstiles where delayed the club was unable to move up.

However, in March 2016 it was agreed that the club would be taking ownership of Scours Lane from season 2016 -2017.

This now means all the club’s teams are playing on facilities next to each other and what a historical day it was. The ground has been renamed Rivermoor Stadium, and the club has the privilege of playing the Junior Premier League. We are proud to announce a new club sponsor Parkers.
