Sometimes, I wonder how we got to this conclusion of putting our phones in our lockers—it seems so unfair. I interviewed some people in our school community to get both sides of the story. Q. We still have students using the phones in class, but we can strive to improve. One suggestion is that we should go back to the old rule, but if you keep using it in class two or more times then you have to keep it in your locker because you lost the privilege. -Chelsea Onuekwusi RAMS CHRONICLE The Secrets of Passing Math Class Isn’t it hard to pass in math? Well, now I want to give you advice on how to not only pass math but get an A! First piece of advice: practice, practice, practice! The first step to succeeding in math class is to practice. Math is not hard once you get the concept, and if you practice, it could be easy as singing the ABC’s. Second piece of advice: focus! Sometimes you know the right stuff but just can’t focus. Here’s how you start. Before a task, “calm your brain,” says Venezky, an expert. He continues by saying, “Take a minute or two to sit in a comfortable position and breathe deeply into your stomach.” Another way to focus is just taking short breaks to calm down and rest your head. Those are two great ways to lower your anxiety and focus better. Another piece of advice is to do your work. If you do your work and homework, you may see all the potential you have. Everyone has the stuff to pass; it’s just the will or lack thereof that keeps you from passing. Also, you pass by paying attention to your teacher and speaking up when you need help or don’t understand. It’s okay to not understand and need help. What’s not okay is when you give up. Giving up won’t help you pass math class. It gets you nowhere in whatever you do because giving up means that that’s it. That causes conflict. That last piece of advice from me is ignore all distractions. Distractions will keep you from reaching your goal, so try to get rid of as many as you can. The rest of the distractions you just ignore. Even though you should ignore all distractions, you can still keep some like chatting with your friend once in awhile, as long as it's not so much that you forget about what you’re doing. I asked Ms. McGill, sixth grade math teacher and department chair, what advice she would give students on passing in math or in general. Here’s what she had to say: ¨Make sure you do all your work, and take notes and study them at least 10 minutes every night. Anything that you struggle with you can always go on Khan academy or any other computer program and practice. When you’re doing homework or taking a test, read your questions repeatedly as if you’re doing it for the first time. Don´t be afraid to ask questions in class when you are confused with something. And always come prepared for class,¨ she said. So the next time you are feeling overstressed and overwhelmed in math, follow the steps above and see if they help. -Akwan Ateghang What Was Easier, Fifth or Sixth Grade?
