Introduction Our group was assigned to visit Bao Gong Temple, which is part of the Jalan Kayu Joint Temple located at 70 Sengkang West Avenue. Despite the small scale, it is regarded as a holy place by numerous worshippers and it is the only temple named after Bao Gong among all the Singapore temples consecrating him. The Bao Gong Temple Council have dedicated considerable efforts to public welfare which attracted more devotees. They even supervised a publication of The Book for the Treasures of Singapore Bao Gong Temple (《新加坡包公庙典藏书》) in 2015 to further spread Bao Gong culture and to document the history of the temple. The Folk Belief in Bao Gong The belief of Bao Gong was derived from the folklores of Bao Zheng (999-1062). Born in Hefei, Bao Zheng started rendering government service in 1037 and gained continuous promotion from the then highest ruler, Emperor Renzong of Song in the next 26 years. Among all his political achievements, he was most well-known for the impartial adjudication when he served as the mayor of Kaifeng (the capital of Northern Song). Remediating corruption and impeaching guilty nobles, Bao Zheng always upheld the interests of the masses, was loyal to the nation and disciplined himself. -

I notice that, on the one hand, the state is cracking down on danmei fans’ erotic writing by punishing creators who produce “yinhui” works and depriving them of or imposing stringent censorship on media platforms where danmei fans share their works; on the other hand, the banned danmei dramas adapted from popular original novels are adjusted into “dan’gai dramas” to reenter the mainstream market and in this tends, several works have received huge commercial success. Juxtaposing these two phenomena, I divided the paper into two chapters to analyze two groups of texts – the danmei erotica which are criminalized or stigmatized by the discourse of “yinhui seqing” and the adapted dan’gai drama and its original novel which are permitted and consumed in the market. -

They include Peking Opera based in the northern and southern regions of the Mainland, Yue Opera featured by its lyricism and aesthetically appealing staging, Kunqu Opera and Cantonese Opera, together with venerable Liyuan Opera and quaint Ou Opera. From the Masculine to the Feminine Eunuch Images in Hong Kong Wuxia Films from the 1960s to the early 2010s Shanshan Song A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chinese The University of Canterbury 2016 Abstract The eunuch characters, representing a classic type of villain, usually feature strongly in Chinese audiences’ memories about Hong Kong cinema, especially the wuxia genre during its glorious days in the twentieth century. They were created and stereotyped in Hong Kong cinema, developing with every rise and fall of Hong Kong wuxia genre, and varying at every crucial moment of the modern history of Hong Kong. In the light of not only western gender and culture theories in regard to the concepts of masculine and feminine, but also Chinese philosophies in terms of yin and yang in particular, this thesis sets out to explore the evolution of the gender and cultural presentation of eunuch images in Hong Kong wuxia films from the 1960s to the early 2010s. With the aid of Jean Baudrillard and Judith Butler’s theories, the two terms masculine and feminine will be argued as being not simply effective in gender representation, but also valid in outlining the logical mechanism which governs the organisation of the cultural phenomena. Meantime, Michel Foucault and Laura Mulvey’s findings about the relationship between power and gaze will be employed to anatomise the specific case of culture construction. The exploration of eunuch images will be intertwined with the examination of the Hong Kong cultural identity not only in the interactive triangle relationship between Hong Kong, Britain and China before 1997, but also in an interdependent Hong Kong-mainland connection in the post-colonial situation.
