Fey's reputation as a feminist—indeed, as Hollywood's Token Feminist, as some journalists have wryly pointed out—heavily inflects the character she plays, the "bossy" Liz Lemon, whose idealistic feminism is a mainstay of her characterization and of the show's comedy. Fey's comedy has always focused on gender, beginning with her work on Saturday Night Live (SNL) where she became that show's first female head writer in 1999. A year later she moved from behind the scenes to appear in the "Weekend Update" sketches, attracting national attention as a gifted comic with a penchant for zeroing in on women's issues. Fey's connection to feminist politics escalated when she returned to SNL for guest appearances during the presidential campaign of 2008, first in a sketch protesting the sexist media treatment of Hillary Clinton, and more forcefully, in her stunning imitations of vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, which launched Fey into national politics and prominence. [2] On 30 Rock, Liz Lemon is the head writer of an NBC comedy much likeSNL, and she is identified as a "third wave feminist" on the pilot episode.

  • 30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom
30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? • Admissions Requirements to the Commercial Pilot
Big Bend COMMUNITY COLLEGE COMMERCIAL PILOT PROGRAM Thank you for your interest in the Aviation Program at Big Bend Community College. We hope you will find the following information helpful and will call to arrange a tour of our training facilities. (509.793.2241). HISTORY The Big Bend Community College Aviation Program is an FAA authorized commercial pilot training program, which started in 1965 with 23 students and 3 airplanes. Today, there are approximately 100 students, 26 aircraft, 3 simulators, and 10-14 full-time instructors. During the course of our two-year program, an average student will fly 220 hours to gain a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating. Aviation training at Big Bend is taken in conjunction with academic or vocational courses that the student chooses, to fulfill the requirements of the Associate in Arts and Science transfer option and the Associate in Applied Science-Commercial Pilot. Most students will complete both degrees simultaneously without any additional costs. All students who complete Big Bend’s aviation program will receive the Restricted-Airline Transport Pilot (R-ATP) authorization, which will lower the ATP certificate requirements by 250 hours and allow them to enter the industry more rapidly. OPTIONS One of the many advantages of attending Big Bend’s flight program is that upon completion, you will have many options available. One option is to go immediately into a flight career. You will have the best training available and will have Big Bend’s reputation that is respected by employers worldwide. Today, many major airlines no longer require a bachelor’s degree.

Rights and Resources Initiative Annual Review 2013–2014 THE RIGHTS AND RESOURCES INITIATIVE RRI is a global coalition of 13 Partners and over 140 international, regional, and community organizations advancing forest tenure, policy, and market reforms. RRI leverages the strategic collaboration and investment of its Partners and Collaborators around the world by working together on research, advocacy and convening strategic actors to catalyze change on the ground. RRI is coordinated by the Rights and Resources Group, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. For more information, please visit www.rightsandresources.org. PARTNERS SUPPORTERS SUPPORTERS The views presented here are not necessarily shared by the agencies that have generously supported this work. AT A GLANCE: RIGHTS AND RESOURCES 1 2013-2014 We had hoped to report good news, to trumpet the rising tide of support for community forest land rights around the world in 2013. But while there were many encouraging pronouncements last year—from courts, governments, and some of the world’s largest corporations —unfortunately, progress on the ground remains very limited. And worse, new research reveals a slowdown in the recognition of community forest land rights in developing countries over the last six years. Despite some high-profile wins, less new legislation has been passed since 2008 than in the preceding six years—and recent laws are weaker than before. None of these laws recognize land ownership, and the amount of forest land secured for community ownership since 2008 is less than 20 percent of that in the previous six years.

  • Jury Duty Is a Poll Tax: the Case for Severing the Link Between Voter Registration and Jury Service
Jury Duty is a Poll Tax: The Case for Severing the Link Between Voter Registration and Jury Service ∗ ALEXANDER E. PRELLER Federal jury service has been formally connected to voter registration since 1968. Congress intended for this linkage to improve the American jury system by increasing representation of groups previously excluded from the jury pool. However, as legislative inaction and judicial acquiescence have exacerbated the economic costs of jury service, this practice has also para- sitically burdened the right to vote, creating a “self-disenfranchising incen- tive.” This Note argues that jury duty is sufficiently burdensome, and that this burden sufficiently impacts voting, so as to constitute a poll tax in vio- lation of the Twenty-Fourth Amendment and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. There is a simple, effective solution to this problem: prohibiting the use of voter registration lists to create jury lists, and instead using any number of available alternative sources to create a representative jury pool. I. INTRODUCTION People hate getting jury duty.1 Even those who enjoy serving on a jury report that they try to avoid it whenever possible.2 One ∗ Articles Editor, COLUM.J.L.&SOC.PROBS., 2012−13. J.D.
