A Review of Nate Logan’s Inside the Golden Days of Missing You (Magic Helicopter Press, 2018) Jessie Janeshek The Midwest is a weird place. I say this as a West Virginian, remembering the first time I traveled far enough west in Ohio to realize what flat land really looked like. Since then, having spent time in Nebraska and Missouri, I can say that the Midwest conjures a wonderful surreality and an eerie sense of possibility, a feeling that you just don’t get surrounded by hills. On the plains you just keep looking. It’s hard to judge time or space. How far off is that black cloud? How far off is that farmhouse? Funnel clouds, funnel cakes…anything can happen out there. The poems in Nate Logan’s debut collection Inside the Golden Days of Missing You capture this weirdness. As Logan writes in “Bad Execution,” “Some big questions approach a person/strolling through a cornfield…” In “We’re an American Band,” the ten-part, penultimate poem of the book, “I high-five each cornstalk as I slip/into the night’s paint sample. Folding/in half is the first magic trick I learned/and so Midwestern…” But Logan’s world is also broader than that. Poems move through California, the Great Salt Lake, Marfa, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, the Caribbean, and an episode of “Guantanamo Baywatch” and, in pieces like “The River Nate” and “Lumbering” (in which “I don’t feel/like a haunted lumberyard tonight”), they use physical geography to explore speakers’ emotional terrains. The work is diverse in form, ranging from prose poems to shorter stanza-ed poems to longer poems in parts to “Slot Machine,” a three-columned poem that should be gimmicky but isn’t.

Classic Poetry Series David Berman - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive David Berman(4 January 1967) David Berman is an American poet, cartoonist, and singer-songwriter best known for his work with indie-rock band the Silver Jews. <b>Biography</b> David Berman was born January 4, 1967 in Williamsburg, Virginia. He attended high school at Greenhill School in Addison, Texas, before matriculating at the University of Virginia. While in Charlottesville, Virginia, Berman began writing and performing songs (often left on friends' voice message machines) with his loose band, Ectoslavia, primarily composed of UVA classmates Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. Upon graduation from the University of Virginia, the trio moved to Hoboken, New Jersey, where they shared an apartment and adopted the moniker Silver Jews. Before moving to Hoboken, Malkmus had also founded another band, Pavement, with his childhood friend Scott Kannberg. As Pavement's acclaim and visibility grew, the notion arose that the Silver Jews were a "Pavement side-project," despite the fact that Berman's writing, singing, and guitar playing led the band's music, and, of course, the Silver Jews preceded Pavement. On the band's early recordings, Berman even tried to protect the Jews' individuality by listing Malkmus and Nastanovich under aliases, but it backfired when people learned who "Hazel Figurine" and "Bobby N." really were. Not long after the success of Pavement's debut album, Slanted and Enchanted (which was named after a cartoon Berman had created), Dan Koretsky, founder of the Chicago-based indie label Drag City, met Berman at a Pavement show.

He appears as the inaugural guest of Macaulay’s new speaker series, the Kenan Lectures in Ethics and Resistance. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Berman has been called “one of the most gifted lyricists of the last two decades” by The Washington Post, which dubbed his songs “hilarious, heartbreaking, pretty, ugly and everything in between.” Recently profiled in the Jewish arts and culture journal Tablet, Berman has often collaborated during his idiosyncratic career with musician Stephen Malkmus, the frontman of Pavement, an icon of the 1990s independent music scene.
