Heavy-metal in the 1970s was Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Rush, and it was the most theatrical and brutal of rock genres. It was not easy to reconcile this genre with the anti-heroic ethos of the punk era. It could have seemed almost impossible to revive that genre, that was slowly dying, in an era that valued the exact opposite of machoism, and that was producing a louder and noisier genre, hardcore. Instead, heavy metal began its renaissance in the same years of the new wave, capitalizing on the same phenomenon of independent labels. Credit goes largely to a British contingent of bands, that realized how they could launch a "new wave of British heavy metal" during the new wave of rock music. Motorhead (1), formed by ex-Hawkwind bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster, were the natural bridge between heavy metal, Stooges/MC5 and punk-rock. They played demonic, relentless rock'n'roll at supersonic speed: Iron Horse (1977), Metropolis (1979), Bomber (1979), Jailbait (1980), Iron Fist (1982), etc.

Flipside called ’em “one of the most brutalizing live bands In 1980, over-with small cities and run-down mill towns across the Northeast from the period.” 1983’s gnarly Basement Tape teemed with bored kids with nothing to do. Punk of any kind earned a cultural demo included credits that read: “Play loud in death sentence in the land of stiff upper-lipped Yanks. That cultural isolation math class.” became the impetus for a few notable local Hardcore scenes. During the first half of the 1990s, pop music vastly outnumbered underground/experimental music. It was the revenge of melody, after a quarter of a century of progressive sounds. A cycle that began with the demise of the Beatles and the rise of alternative/progressive rock, and that continued with the German and Canterbury schools of the 1970s, and then punk-rock and the new wave, and peaked with the alt-rock and college- pop of the 1980s, came to an abrupt, grinding halt in the 1990s. The more fashionable and rewarding route was, however, the one that coasted the baroque pop of latter-day Beach Boys, Van Dyke Parks, Big Star and XTC, the one that coupled catchy refrains and lush arrangements. The single most important school may have been San Francisco's, which had originated in the 1980s with the Sneetches. Jellyfish (2), featuring guitarist Jason Falkner, wrote perhaps the most impeccable melodies of the time. Bellybutton (1990), a milestone of naive, bubblegum melodic music inspired by Merseybeat and later Beach Boys, was both cartoonish and shimmering, while the arrangements on Spilt Milk (1993) were almost baroque.

  • Secret Studios
Legacy Business Registry Staff Report Hearing Date: November 9, 2020 SECRET STUDIOS Application No.: LBR-2020-21-013 Business Name: Secret Studios Business Address: 2200 Cesar Chavez Street District: District 10 Applicant: Happy Sanchez, Owner Nomination Date: September 22, 2020 Nominated By: Mayor London Breed Staff Contact: Richard Kurylo [email protected] BUSINESS DESCRIPTION Secret Studios, Inc. is a music recording studio and rehearsal space that has been in operation since 1982. Secret Studios initially opened at 250-C Napoleon Street, in an industrial area just south of Potrero Hill, and was comprised of just two small rooms to rehearse and record music. San Francisco’s dense housing stock doesn’t lend itself to “garage bands” and homegrown rehearsal space. It became evident that San Francisco residents were in need of space to come together, practice, and record their music. In 1983, one of these residents looking for space to practice was a young, local musician taking classes at San Francisco State University’s Audio Production department. This local musician, Greg McKee, would go on to become friends with the owner and soon began working at the studio. Three years later, in 1986, McKee (who legally changed his name to Happy Sanchez) was offered the opportunity to purchase Secret Studios and has been keeping music traditions alive as the owner ever since. The demand for studio recording space has kept Secret Studios at full capacity throughout its years, with no need for advertising. The word-of-mouth reputation the studio garnered from the artistic community, as well as the changing demographics of musicians in the Bay Area, has consistently put pressure on the business to expand its space and offerings.
