According to Deputy Paul le Claire (pictured), the demolition of the Odeon Building should be permitted in order to develop a better holistic re-generation of the North of Town. ‘The Odeon building in my opinion is a very ugly and unsightly building which is going to diminish the attractiveness of the new Town Park. A modern development on the Odeon site would enhance the park. The Odeon is currently listed by the Planning Minister. I believe the best start for us would be with a blank sheet of paper. I would like to open the gateway for such a proposal by giving the developer that opportunity. There is no compulsion to demolish, but if my amendment is approved they will not be restricted in the way they are at present.” The Masterplan and the various amendments that have been brought to it can be found on the website www.statesassembly.gov.je under ‘Propositions’ - NORTH OF TOWN MASTERPLAN (REVISED) (P.190/2010) f

Good reasons to visit 92 Bath Street With all the recent debate over the future of Bath Street’s Odeon Cinema, it’s easy to overlook the fact that lying in its shadow is a small group of shops considered essential by their regular customers. The retail outlets at 92 Bath Street are mostly long established businesses, trading from this part of St Helier long before plans to add parks or demolish buildings. Tucked away opposite the former entrance to the cinema, they are easy to overlook. But we think you should take the time to visit when next passing – you may be surprised what’s on offer. Town matters

Town Centre Manager Richard Mackenzie brings us up to date with monthly events and activities around the streets of St Helier. Residents and visitors to St Helier will notice the ever-changing face of town’s shopping windows and businesses. Each month the Town Crier highlights new businesses to our town. February is a month when retailers draw a sigh of relief as they have survived the Christmas period and also the January Sales. Unfortunately the weather is cold but a lot of the stock in clothes shops is designed for warmer times, so anybody travelling to warmer climes at this time becomes the retailer’s best friend. Car parking is changing in town with the Gas Place Car Park closing for the long-awaited Town Park, but the good news is that the temporary Ann Court Car Park has opened and has some dedicated three hour parking spaces which will be ideal for shopping in the market and Wests Centre. There are a lot of new traders planning to open in town and Ima’s Caribbean Coffee Bar has just opened. This is a great example of a local trader opening a unique new business with an offer that is not replicated elsewhere. Independent traders are vital to the Island as they provide an offer that differentiates the Island from equivalent UK shopping centres. St Helier has a shopping offer that for the size of population cannot be bettered and, with the safe and clean f environment, is a shopping centre that we can all be proud of. By Nikki Zachariou People give up on their fitness quest because they aren’t seeing the results they’re hoping for quick enough. You feel like you are going to have to slave away for hours and eat next to nothing for a long time before you start seeing the results you were expecting.

Understandably, this is de-motivating; you miss a couple of sessions and before you know it you’re just another statistic for unused gym memberships. Some people will turn to quick fix solutions which often stop working the minute you stop using them and they aren’t meant to be used for the long term. The good news is this whole slaving away for weeks on end (no fun) and eating lettuce leaves (not good for you) to get good and quick results is totally untrue! We’re not going to tell you that getting fit doesn’t require effort on your behalf, but if you combine an effective exercise plan with regularity and the correct eating plan then you WILL begin to see results fairly quickly. f Page16 The Town Crier St Helier’s quest to find allotments For some considerable time, the Constable has been actively seeking an appropriate location for allotments in St Helier. Despite pleas in the press and asking at every opportunity for owners of land to consider allotments, none has been forthcoming. However, there may now be good news on the horizon, as we are currently considering a field situated at Mont au Prêtre. The Jersey Allotments and Leisure Gardening Association have been asked if they would consider the Parish field for allotments under their Scheme. This request followed a visit to their allotment site at Les Creux, which proved to be very informative as well as showing how extremely well organised the Association is.
