INTRODUCTION Far too many—if not most—of us in the legal profession who belong to both the disability and LGBTQþ communities have known informally, through our own experi- ences and those of others like us, that workplace bias and discrimination on the basis of disability, sexuality, and gender identity is still widespread. The new study by Blanck et al. on diversity and inclusion in the U.S. legal profession provides empirical proof of this phenomenon, which might otherwise be dismissed as being based on anecdotal evidence.1 Its findings lend credibility to our position that the legal profession must make systemic changes to address workplace ableism, heterosexism, and transmisia.2 They also suggest †Committee for Public Counsel Services, Mental Health Litigation Division. Being an Ally for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People 1919 University Avenue West, Suite 400, St. Paul, MN 55104 Tel. 651-645-2948 or 888-NAMIHELPS www.namihelps.org Here are some guidelines for people wanting to be allies for LGBT people around them. In today’s world, LGBT issues are being discussed more than ever before…in the media, in community programs, in schools, churches, offices, in the streets, and in people’s homes. These discussions are often emotionally charged as this can be a threatening topic for many people, and clear information is often difficult to find. Being an ally is important, but it is challenging as well as exciting. This list is not exhaustive, but provides some starting points. Add your own ideas and suggestions! Don’t assume heterosexuality. We tend to assume that everyone we meet is heterosexual even though we know this is not true. Often people hide that they are LGBT until they know it is safe to “come out” in a given situation. Use neutral language when first working with students/clients/customers until you know for certain what the person prefers (for example, the gender of their significant other). Educate yourself about lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender issues. There are many resources, reading lists, and organizations available for information. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Explore ways to creatively integrate LGBT issues in your work. Doing so can be a valuable process for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Integrating LGBT people and issues instead of separating them out as a “special topic” is an important strategy for conveying and creating respect and acceptance. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract of Thesis This thesis examines the birth of secondary education for Jews in England, focusing on the middle classes as defined in the text. This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated. -

New men of wealth and the purchase of land in Great Britain and Ireland, 1780 to 1879* new men of wealth by David Brown Abstract Of all the indicators of the integration of the bourgeoisie class and the aristocracy, the most important was the purchase of a residence and a landed estate by ‘new men of wealth’. In new research, 2566 new men of wealth have been identified who purchased estates of over 1000 acres and a rental of £1000 in Great Britain and Ireland between 1780 and 1879. Of those, 1439 purchased estates of over 2000 acres in extent and £2000 in rental, which represents an estimated turnover of over 38 per cent over the century. Although there is no consensus about what level of upward mobility is required for an elite to be ‘open’, these figures demonstrates that there were sufficient purchasers to sustain the contemporary belief that Britain’s elite was indeed open. The relationship between plutocratic and aristocratic elites in the century of the classic Industrial Revolution has been a topic of great interest to historians. For example, Avner Offer has explored the development of the ideology of a ‘free trade in land’ to break the aristocratic dominance achieved through the use of strict settlement. R. J. Morris has considered the strategies adopted by middle-class families to succeed in a period where landed wealth still dominated.1 The most divisive, and arguably the key issue about this relationship, arising from the Marxist model of conflict between the rising bourgeois elite and the declining aristocratic elite, has been the tendency of ‘new wealth’ to join the ranks of landowners. -

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE FUND LETTERS, 1848-1898 (bulk 1855-1856) 1 cubic foot (3 boxes) BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Hugh Auchincloss was born Dec. 28, 1878 in New York City. He was educated at Groton, was graduated from Yale in 1901, and received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S), Columbia University, in 1905. After surgical residencies at Presbyterian and Roosevelt Hospitals in New York, he began a long association with both Presbyterian Hospital and P&S, eventually becoming Chief of the Second Surgical Division of Presbyterian and Professor of Clinical Surgery at P&S. He was best known for his skill in surgery of the hand and of the breast. He died in 1947. Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy to William Edward and Frances Smith Nightingale. Educated at home by her father, she later rejected the traditional role and pursuits of an upper-class Victorian lady to devote herself to nursing reform and public health advocacy. She became an iconic figure in Victorian Britain through her work nursing British troops during the Crimean War (1854-1856). Afterwards, though an invalid for most the rest of her life, Nightingale became an influential voice in government public health policy in late 19th century Britain, especially as it affected India. Nightingale died on August 13, 1910. HISTORICAL NOTE: The Florence Nightingale Fund was created as a result of the work of a group led by author Anna Maria Hall, her husband, journalist Samuel Carter Hall and statesman Sir Sidney Herbert and his wife, writer and prominent social figure Elizabeth Herbert, who in 1855 organized a public subscription to create a testament to Britain’s appreciation Florence Nightingale’s service to the nation during the Crimean War.
