Campus Lights ~........... ~ ....... Welcome to Campus Lights 1992 "An Evening of American 1992 Musical Theatre." We believe the caliber of this year's show is one of the finest Campus Lights has offered in years. From the overture to the second act curtain, tonight's show is an almost non-stop evening of song and dance. Most of our musical selections are obscure and seldom find an audience, so you'll Music & Lyrics do good to recognize, at the most, two or three songs. Our aim is to present you with a variety of music within the small course yColeman& of an evening. We've carefully woven songs together to form three musical stories. In the first act we've broken up two plots Uavid Z.!Ppel with ballads from Edwin Drood. The songs don't have any­ Richard Adler & Je~11 l<.oss thing to do with the plots as does Hernando's Hideaway, a fun Rupert Holmes punch to end the first act. However, the second act is devoted S~:ehen Sondheim entirely to the subject of marriage. Tonight's show is conveyed Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt mostly through song. Lyrically, this is not a show where you Richard Ro<!&~rs & Stephen Sondheim can sit back and relax. It will take an alert ear to appreciate the Robert Wright & George Forrest clever jokes and rhymes contained in the lyrics.     11. Name: Rupert Holmes Years: February 24, 1947 – Present Residence: Nanuet, New York Brief Biography: Rupert Holmes was born under the name David Goldstein in Northwich, Cheshire, England. His father was an American army officer and his mother was an English woman. His family was musically inclined, evidenced by his father being a band leader and his brother growing up to be an opera singer. His family relocated after a few years to Nanuet, New York, where Holmes grew up and attended nearby Nyack High School. After graduating, Holmes went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music where he majored in clarinet. He married in 1969 to Elizabeth Dreifuss, whom he had three children with. In his twenties, Holmes was a session musician (composing, playing, and recording) and worked with groups such as The Cuff Links, The Buoys, and The Archies. It was at this time that he made his first appearances on the billboard charts. He went on to be a recording artist in his own right by 1974. His work was noticed by Barbra Streisand and was utilized in the movie A Star Is Born. "Escape" debuted on Holmes' fifth album, Partners in Crime, and reached the Hot 100 No. 1 Hits of 1979 becoming the last number one song of the 1970s. A number of his songs such as “Town Square” and “Terminal,” directly or indirectly reference where he grew up around Nyack. He wrote a single for The Jets called "You Got It All" which was later rerecorded by Britney Spears in 2000. Holmes also went on to become a playwright with plays such as The Mystery of Edwin Drood, the Tony Award-nominated ("Best Play 2003") Say Goodnight, Gracie, and musical theatre version of the film The First Wives Club.

Scott Parry Copyright by Samantha Anne Kuhn 2013 Abstract The purpose of this paper is to document the costume design and production process for Rupert Holmes’ musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood, as produced by the Department of Theatre and the School of Music at The Ohio State University and directed by A. Scott Parry, the School of Music’s Director of Lyric Theatre. The musical was presented in the Thurber Theatre at Ohio State, November 7 through November 11, 2012. The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a musical in which a Victorian Music Hall troupe in 1892 England performs a dramatization of Charles Dickens’ final, unfinished novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Told in the vaudevillian manner of English Music Hall Theatre of the late nineteenth century, the piece utilizes song, dance, bawdy humor and audience participation to tell and ultimately discover an ending to Dickens’ story. Research and designs for the production were derived from photographs, historical research and artwork of Music Hall performers and everyday English citizens from the late nineteenth century. The scenic design transformed the Thurber Theatre into a nineteenth century Music Hall, necessitating that the costume design also transform the actors into Victorian performers to support the historical demands of the script and to create an authentic experience for the audience.
