KELLY Yamaha Corporation of America .........................................................3 We are the Music-Makers We are the Dreamers of Dreams 2 The Iowa Bandmaster The Iowa Bandmaster 3 President’s Message By Russell Kramer We’re on the homestretch to the end of the year! If you are like me, I’m in a panic with Solo Festival, Large Group Festival, spring concerts, preparing for summer lessons, graduation music, a parade on Memorial Day weekend, municipal band, etc. This is a very hectic and stressful time for band directors of all levels. One way to help your stress level – attend the 90th Annual Iowa Bandmasters Association Conference, May 11-13, 2017, in Des Moines at the Downtown Marriott! For many of us, the conference provides opportunities to recharge, rejuvenate and refresh our enthusiasm for our art and craft. This year’s conference should be no exception! Clinicians from across the country will be presenting on everything from emotional intelligence and rhythm/exercise work to programming and conducting. There will be something for everyone! A couple of notes about the conference planning – this year, the Catholic Pastoral Center is under renovation, removing our extra performance/clinic space. After MANY failed attempts to get something downtown, I was forced to move the All-Iowa 8th Grade Honor Band rehearsal to Drake University. While not ideal in location to the Marriott, the rehearsal space is in their Performing Arts Hall and should provide a wonderful rehearsal environment for the group. Thank you in advance for your understanding and a special thank you to Jill Dobel and Ann Kamp for their extra efforts this year in making the situation work. Another fallout from not having the Catholic Pastoral Center is that we didn’t have room for all of the performances on Thursday and Friday in the Iowa Ballroom. Additionally, I had feedback from teachers that stated they weren’t allowed leave during the week to attend the conference and wanted more opportunities on Saturday. My solution for both issues was to make Saturday morning an extensive learning day. Two school performances will take place with numerous clinics. I believe that someone would still be able to get University of Iowa graduate credit (attending six sessions with guidelines) by just attending Friday night and Saturday. This is something that has not been possible in the past. The Saturday line-up is tremendous: Williamsburg High School, under the direction of Stephanie Williamson, will be premiering a new work by John Mackey at her concert; Dr. Jack Stamp will be giving a conducting clinic; Dr. Natalie Steele Royston and Dr. Steven Smyth, both from ISU, have wonderful clinics planned; Technology, jazz, beginners, ESSA – it’s all there! Ryan Meyer’s group from Harlan Elementary will provide a wonderful concert to close our event. Please make every effort to stay for Saturday morning – I know you will not be disappointed! John Whitwell, Emeritus Professor from Michigan State University, will be our keynote speaker. His speech will deal with his mentors and how they shaped his life. John is an outstanding educator and musician but an even better human being! I am excited for everyone to have the chance to interact with him. Keith Brion and the New Sousa Band will be performing a concert at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. They are planning
