December 1974 Approximately 286 reasons why you should listen to Jesse Winchester By Giovanni Daddomo If you’ve been a reader of Zigzag for as long as I have, i.e., since very early on, you’ll recall how at the start there weren’t too many interviews, most of the features being of the type now more often found in the younger fan magazines such as Fat Angel, Omaha Rainbow, Hot Wacks et al, that is, extended eulogies of a band/singer garnished with whatever biographical information the authors were/are able to glean from their subjects’ press offices. I’d like to revert to that praiseworthy (if wanting) form in the case of Jesse Winchester because (a) I doubt if enough people are familiar enough with Jesse’s work for an extended interview to be warranted at this time, and (b) because he wasn’t in when I phoned him. Anyway, that’s the waffle taken care of, so let’s progress without further ado to…. The Skimpy Biography Jesse was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1945. He was a musical infant, playing piano by the time he was six and organ in the local church by the time he was twelve. In 1959 Jesse discovered rock’n’roll, got himself a cheap guitar and joined a group on the strength of the three chords he learned the same day he bought the guitar. His heroes at this time were Ray Charles and Jerry Lee Lewis. Jesse played the local clubs, bars, dancehalls and college circuits with various bands and eventually (1967) ended up in Hamburg with a now forgotten band.

514 TENNESSEE BLUE BOOK Tennessee Symbols And Honors Official Seal of the State Even before Tennessee achieved statehood efforts were made by local govern- mental organizations to procure official seals. Reliable historians have assumed that as early as 1772 the Articles of the Agreement of the Watauga Association authorized the use of a seal. The Legislature of the state of Franklin, by an official act, provided “for procuring a Great Seal for this State,” and there is also evidence that a seal was intended for the Territory South of the River Ohio. The secretary of that territory requested the assistance of Thomas Jefferson in March, 1792, in “suggesting a proper device” for a seal. There is no direct evidence, however, that a seal was ever made for any of these predecessors of Tennessee. When Tennessee became a state, the Constitution of 1796 made provision for the preparation of a seal. Each subsequent constitution made similar provisions and always in the same words as the first. This provision is (Constitution of 1796, Article II, Section 15; Constitution of 1835, Article III, Section 15; Constitution of 1870, Article III, Section 15) as follows: There shall be a seal of this state, which shall be kept by the governor, and used by him officially, and shall be called “The Great Seal of the State of Tennessee.” In spite of the provision of the Constitution of 1796, apparently no action was taken until September 25, 1801. On that date committees made up of members from both the Senate and the House of Representatives were appointed.

CHORAL ARRANGEMENTS • COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME® AND MUSEUM TENNESSEE WALTZ Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King of the Golden West Cowboys wrote “Tennessee Waltz” during the winter of 1946, in the back of a truck while traveling to a show in Nashville, TN. The song tells the story of a sweetheart who loses their beloved to a friend at a dance. “Tennessee Waltz” rose to fame as a country hit for Patti Page in 1950 but was soon a crossover success for numerous other artists, including Sam Cooke, The Chieftains, and Otis Redding. In addition to its national and international commercial success, “Tennessee Waltz” is played by many college marching bands, from North Carolina’s Appalachian State University to Texas’s Baylor University.
