AJROUCH is director of the Gerontology Program and associate pro- fessor of sociology at Eastern Michigan University, as well as adjunct associate research professor at the Institute for Social Research at The University of Michigan. Her research has focused, for over ten years, on Arabs in the U.S. and more recently in the Middle East. She has published in numerous national and international journals including Ethnic and Racial Studies, Social Science and Medicine, and Aging and Society. Her current work focuses on projects that enhance global awareness and promote cross-cultural understanding. SOPHIE BODY-GENDROT is a professor of political science and American studies and the director of the Center for Urban Studies at the University of Sorbonne- Paris IV. Specializing in cross-national comparisons of minorities, including Muslim youth in French cities, her research focuses on comparative public poli- cy, ethnic and racial issues, urban disorders, and empowerment. A frequent visit- ing scholar at New York University and an expert on public space in the Urban Age Program of the London School of Economics, she has published numerous articles in Europe and in the United States. YVONNE YAZBECK HADDAD is professor of history of Islam and Christian- Muslim relations at the School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University. She has published extensively on Islam in the twentieth century, Muslims in North America, Qur’an and Qur’anic Exegesis, Christian-Muslim relations, and women in Islam. Her recent books include Not Quite American? The Shaping of Arab and Muslim Identity in the United States (Baylor University Press, 2004). She is past- president of the American Academy of Religion (New England Region) and the Middle East Studies Association. CAITLIN KILLIAN is an associate professor of sociology at Drew University. Her interests include immigration and cultural adaptation, identity processes, and gender and ethnic socialization. She has published articles on Maghrebin women’s cultural adaptation in France, Muslim women’s views on the headscarf affair in France, immigrants’ identity negotiation, Vietnamese parents and chil- dren in the United States, and the role of bicultural competence in reducing crime among the children of immigrants. She is the author of North African Women in France: Gender, Culture, and Identity (Stanford University Press, 2006). KATHLEEN MOORE is a professor at the University of California—Santa Barbara. Trained as a political scientist, her interests include the interdisciplinary study of law and society, specifically related to the presence of Muslim communities in the United States and Britain. Her most recent publications include a co-authored book, Muslim Women in America: The Challenge of Islamic Identity Today (Oxford iii iv SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION University Press, 2006), as well as essays on anti-Muslim violence and discrimi- nation in post-9/11 America and the impact of media on American attitudes toward Muslims in the United States. Her current work focuses on the requisites for legal mobilization among Muslims in the U.S. JEN’NAN GHAZAL READ is associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Irvine. Her research focuses on the economic, cultural, and political adaptation experiences of Muslim Americans and Arab Americans. She has pub- lished widely on this topic, including numerous articles and a book, Culture, Class, and Work among Arab-American Women (LFB Scholarly, 2004). She was recently named a Carnegie Scholar and she is using this award to examine how racial/ethnic and religious diversity among Muslim Americans impacts their par- ticipation in democratic processes. GIRA VASHI is a portfolio analyst for Amli Residential in Chicago. She was an intern and then research assistant on the Youth and Religion Project. Many of the interviews used in this paper come from her M.A. thesis research. RHYS H. WILLIAMS is professor of sociology at the University of Cincinnati. He writes regularly on issues of religion, public culture, and politics, particularly in urban settings. Recent publications include “Liberalism, Religion, and the Dilemma of ‘Immigrant Rights’ in American Political Culture” (in Religion and Social Justice for Immigrants, P. David Yamane Wake Forest University Before I turn to the substantive issue I would like to treat in this column, a word of thanks to Jen’nan Read for her hard work in making this special issue a reality. Most of the articles in this issue were first presented at a conference she organized that received generous support from the Albert and Elaine Borchard Foundation and the Center for the Study of Democracy at UC-Irvine. All of us as sociologists of religion should be grateful for the willingness of organizations such as these to fund our work, and we ought to follow Jen’nan’s lead in seeking out these uncommon sources of funding. Thanks also to Kristine Ajrouch for reviewing the issue and writing a commentary on its contents. * * * Last December, I attended an executive seminar on “Society Publishing: Envisioning Futures, Evolving Strategies,” hosted by Blackwell Publishing at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The daylong seminar covered a variety of interesting topics, such as: “institutional repositories” as alternatives to schol- arly journals, the implications of usage-based versus subscription pricing for libraries, and the ever-provocative issue of impact factors.1 Sitting in this semi- nar for an entire day raised a more general question, what is society publishing for? Why does the Association for the Sociology of Religion (ASR) as a profes- sional society sponsor a journal? Margaret Branschofsky, a librarian at Tufts University who spoke at the sem- inar, suggested four functions of society publishing: registration, archive, dissem- ination, and validation. Registration is essentially publicity for things happening in the field. Book reviews are a good example of this. Given limited advertising budgets for scholarly books, the publication of a book review in a scholarly jour- nal often serves as the major notice to the field as a whole that a book exists. This is especially true for scholars outside the book’s immediate area of concern and others beyond the author’s circle of family and friends. Journals also serve as an archive, a public form of a scholarly society’s institu- tional memory. To wit: Sociology of Religion is committed to publishing the two 1Although interesting, the issue of impact factors does not affect Sociology of Religion directly because this journal is not among those ranked by Thomson ISI. v vi SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION keynote lectures from the ASR’s annual meeting: the Presidential Address and the Paul Hanly Furfey Lecture. The journal also used to have a right of first review for the ASR’s Robert J. McNamara Student Paper Award winner, though the council voted recently to rescind that requirement—a decision I hope is reconsidered in the future precisely because of this archival function of the jour- nal. Finally, the journal occasionally publishes special issues based on papers pre- sented at the annual meeting.

Media, Identities, and Immigrants: Arab Satellite Television in Italy Zala Volčič* SAŽETAK The field of global media has recently seen the publication of several books on the relationship between the media, belonging, and migrants. This research focuses on the complex cultural positioning of communities, who, for a variety of reasons, move to a new country and inhabit the new culture. This article first maps some theoretical and empirical investigations on the issues of immi- grants, and their use of the media. Furthermore, the specific context of the Arab media revolution within and outside Arab countries is presented, and I particularly focus on Al-Jazeera satellite television and an imaginary it offers. I explore, through ethnographic research and in-depth interviews, the use and consumption of Al-Jazeera satellite television by young Arab Muslim immi- grants who meet at the Islamic Cultural Institute of Milan, Italy. I argue that Al-Jazeera represents an original media project which tries to break free from direct control of Arab governments to the media - despite the financial support it continues to receive from the Emir of Qatar. However, the overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding the experience of watching independent news chan- nels should not always be seen in the light of a common desire to identify and unite within the notion of umma. The work is a valuable corrective to ubiquitous binaries: nation/globalization, citizen/immigrant, assimilation/cultural refusal. His accounts of individual trajectories, organizational strategies, and state policies contribute to a particularly fine understanding of the choices, strategies, and tactics available to global subalterns. Silverstein's fieldwork in contemporary France examines the reinvestment in colonial categories of Berber identity and the redeployment of these identities as one strategy of identity for Kabyle Algerians in France. Berber identity, he suggests, is an Algerian and North African identity that is an alternate, parallel, or supplementary choice to Islamic identity, poised both against and with a French identity; a French identity that beckons, promises,

INTRODUCTION: FROM IMMIGRANT CINEMA TO NATIONAL CINEMA Press In September 2010, Maghrebi-French filmmaker Rachid Bouchareb’s seventh feature film, Hors-la-loi, a gangster film set against the backdrop of the Algerian war for independence, was released across cinemas in France. Made for a budget of €20m, released onUniversity more than 400 prints and starring Jamel Debbouze – a French-born actor of Moroccan immigrant parents and one of French cinema’s biggest stars – Hors-la-loi enjoyed the kind of distribution and marketing conditions reserved for onlyCinema the most high-profile French main- stream productions. The film aimed to capitalise on the success of Bouchareb’s Second World War epic, Indigènes (2006), which attracted over three million spectators in France and received an Academy Award nomination for best foreign film (admittedly as an Algerian rather than French film). If Indigènes’ message to its French audience was simultaneously confrontational and con- ciliatory, holdingEdinburgh successive French governments to account for freezing the pensions of North African colonial soldiers at the same time as it argued for the rightful placePost-Beur of the French-born descendants of these colonial veterans in France, Hors-la-loi proved far more controversial. The term “Beur” is not used as an identity based on birth or citizenship but rather as a socio- cultural construct that serves as an analytical tool to dismantle the notion of Frenchness. This study, thus, investigates how cinema reflects on the experience of the Beurs through filmic narrative. The aim is to trace the changing lives of the Beurs as they have been reconstructed in movies since the early eighties. This process is both synchronic and diachronic. Synchronic as it engages in the analysis of films with respect to their historical context and diachronic as it will permit the distilling of the commonalities between these films to lead to the conception of Beur cinema as a film genre.

Writing Verdicts: French And Francophone Narratives Of Race And Racism Abstract Inspired by Didier Eribon's La société comme verdict, this dissertation examines how the novelistic representation of racism and racialization in French-language texts can push back against a collective social verdict in France that stigmatizes non-white peoples as lesser and as other. Though discussing the existence of race is still taboo in France, I show that this stigmatization is in fact a racial verdict, or one that operates through racialization, as opposed to a verdict predicated on sexuality, gender, or class. To do so, I analyze the representation of racial hierarchies and the experience of racism in six novels written in French: Daniel Biyaoula's L'Impasse, Gisèle Pineau's L'Exil selon Julia, Leïla Sebbar's Le Chinois vert d'Afrique, Zahia Rahmani's "Musulman" roman, Cyril Bedel's Sale nègre, and Bessora's 53 cm. As I argue, these authors resist racial verdicts by writing about and examining the place of the ethnic minority individual in French society. In so doing they also issue counter verdicts that condemn society, individuals, and the state for their complicity in maintaining an unjust status quo.

    Tamazgha in France Indigeneity and Citizenship in the diasporic Amazigh movement Jonathan Anthony Harris Geography Department University of Cambridge This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Fitzwilliam College May 2018 Thesis Summary This thesis examines how the Amazigh diaspora, networked in France’s Amazigh cultural associations, village committees and political movements, constructs an imaginative geography of North Africa, which they call Tamazgha, and the implications this has for this emergent and diverse group. It sets out to theorise and understand the political geographies of this diasporic social movement in the contemporary moment. It does so by approaching the Amazigh diaspora as its primary object of research within a relational, multiscalar analysis of its geopolitics. This thesis contributes to the subdiscipline of political geography as well as Amazigh studies. Drawing on ethnographic and documentary methods, including an experimental methodology for the digital sphere, it outlines the major themes of the diasporic Amazigh movement’s relationship to space and place; making the diaspora, articulating indigeneity, negotiating citizenship and accommodating nativism. It analyses facets of Amazigh diaspora politics at times as a nation, at others as a social movement, finding a productive interaction between these two concepts. It is both an imagined community of people who claim to share a common language and culture and a political movement entraining activists, members and political parties in the pursuit of political change. As an Indigenous people, it is both a transnational social movement calling on the states where they live to uphold the rights of their Amazigh populations, and also a nation with a flag, asserting its claim to sovereignty, however limited.

Awada Submitted as partial fulfillment of the requirements for The Master of Arts in History The University of Toledo May 2009 This thesis will tell the story of the Syrian-Lebanese immigrants and their children who lived in Toledo from 1881 until the 1960s. Through oral interviews, local newspaper articles, church and mosque records, and historical works on immigration and ethnicity in the United States, this thesis will chronicle their immigration to Toledo, their experiences with Americanization, and their endeavor to maintain their ethnic identity through community building and home- making efforts, as they made the United States their permanent home. This analysis will be accomplished by examining eleven steps that the Syrian- Lebanese people took to make the United States their permanent home. These iii steps were either assimilative- influenced by an external force, or a home making and community building effort- caused internally by the community to recreate a Syrian village-like atmosphere to make their stay in America pleasant.

    View from the Press Box: Media Representations of Muslim Football Players in France Madison Kunkel International Affairs Honors Spring 2021 Defense Copy Defense Date: April 2, 2021 Committee: Thesis Advisor: Dr. Thomas Zeiler, Department of International Affairs IAFS Honors Council Representative: Dr. Doug Snyder, College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program Second Reader: Dr. Elisabeth Arnould-Bloomfield, Department of French and Italian Abstract This thesis analyzes the convergence of the positive sentiments around the multiracial and multi-religious French football team and the pervasive anti-Muslim sentiment in French society by conducting research on portrayals of Muslim football players on the French national football team over a span of twenty-one years. Conclusions were drawn from a content analysis of newspaper articles from four French publications—Le Monde, Le Figaro, L’Humanité, and La Croix—and supplemented by a questionnaire answered by over fifty French residents. The content analysis and questionnaire provided evidence for multiple patterns of representation. Minority players were subjected to portrayals of symbols of integration, notional acceptance, and brawn versus brains, Orientalist, and clash of civilizations rhetoric, while the team as a whole was often praised as a symbol of the multicultural quality of French society. The presence of these patterns of representation in both the media and questionnaire show that these racist discourses operate in French society and help explain why even second and third generation immigrants are not accepted as French. Additionally, these discourses and the writings about the French team as a symbol of multiculturalism suggest that this symbolism is superficial and only meant to appear as the acceptance of diversity.
