    AC 2007-297: THE SOUND OF MATERIALS: CREATING EXCITEMENT FOR MATERIALS ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS Kathleen Kitto, Western Washington University Kathleen L. Kitto is the Associate Dean for the new College of Sciences and Technology at Western Washington University. Previously, she was Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences and served as Chair of Engineering Technology Department from 1995-2002. Since arriving at Western Washington University in 1988, her primary teaching assignments have been in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program and in the development of the communication skills of engineering technology students; her research interests have been in the materials science of musical instruments, development of concurrent engineering curricula, development of devices for the differently-abled and in finite element analysis of complex components. She is keenly interested in enhancing the diversity of the students studying in the sciences, mathematics and technology. She received both her MS and BS degrees from the University of Montana/Montana Tech and previously worked for many years in industry primarily developing instrumentation systems and advanced materials. The answer to a seemingly simple question about why a Stradivarius violin sounds the way it does is found more in complex materials properties than in many other basic design constraints such as geometry.

Dennis, the American whom we're to back that evening, is still recovering from a late night, so we're off for pancakes in the rain. Ten hours later Dennis and I are on the concert hall stage with my guitar partner Martin, winging it in front of TV cameras and trying to look as worried as the black-tie audience. "I learned a new song tonight," Dennis brags backstage. "We learned two," I shoot back. "Well, I'll have two more for you tomorrow," he grins.     David Tanenbaum Oral History San Francisco Conservatory of Music Library & Archives San Francisco Conservatory of Music Library & Archives 50 Oak Street San Francisco, CA 94102 Interview conducted February 2 and 5, 2016 Sam Smith, Interviewer San Francisco Conservatory of Music Library & Archives Oral History Project The Conservatory’s Oral History Project has the goal of seeking out and collecting memories of historical significance to the Conservatory through recorded interviews with members of the Conservatory's community, which will then be preserved, transcribed, and made available to the public. Among the narrators will be former administrators, faculty members, trustees, alumni, and family of former Conservatory luminaries. Through this diverse group, we will explore the growth and expansion of the Conservatory, including its departments, organization, finances and curriculum. We will capture personal memories before they are lost, fill in gaps in our understanding of the Conservatory's history, and will uncover how the Conservatory helped to shape San Francisco's musical culture through the past century. David Tanenbaum Interview This interview was conducted on February 2nd in the Conservatory’s archives and on February 5th in the backyard of David’s house by Sam Smith. Archivist Tessa Updike was present for both interview sessions. Sam Smith Sam Smith is a communications and marketing specialist as well as a classical tenor and violist. Currently a publicist with the San Francisco Film Society, he served as director of communications for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 2012 to 2015. He appears regularly with many of the region’s leading ensembles, including the San Francisco Symphony, the Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys, American Bach Soloists and Cappella SF, among others.
