While Dave’s craft has led him to work with icons of the music industry, Dave now gives his life to spreading the power of Christian worship through GUITAR AID. Walking through Timisoura Square, Romania, tank tracks fresh on the ground from the country’s revolution, Dave Sumner’s heart was struck with compassion as the reality of those who had died for their freedom dawned. In his travel case Dave had six guitars, which he decided to give away in a hope that music and the ability to worship God through song may bring some form of healing. Thus GUITAR AID was born, with a vision to provide instruments to those who are unable to access or afford them. “It was strange how things worked out in 1990” said Dave. “In 1989 I was commis- sioned to make a guitar for Paul McCartney, it was a gold plated replica of his Hofner Violin bass and come 1990 all the publicity about that came out. Suddenly in every guitar magazine going there was a story about this guitar made for Paul McCartney - it was front page of the Daily Mail the day it was presented and suddenly I could say to all the guitar companies, ‘I’m the guy who made that guitar for Paul McCartney’. So I would ask them if they would sell me some of their second grade guitars so I could repair them and that is how all this started, we were buying guitars and repairing them.” “A Guitar has the ability to change the atmosphere in a church or a community” For more information on GUITAR AID go to - www.guitar-aid.com FEBRUARY 2018 6 © The Old Codger 2016 FREE EVERY MONTH The Old Codger Issue 7 Vol 1 STELLA'S VOICE CHARITY SHOPS HAVANT - unit 23, The Tanneries, Brockhampton lane, PO9 1JB PORTSMOUTH - 98 - 100 Kingston Road PO2 7PA WATERLOOVILLE - unit 15, Wellington Way PO7 7ED HUGE RANGE OF ITEMS AT GREAT PRICES Visit us at www.stellasvoice.org.uk ROCK ‘n’ ROLL while Fats Domino got to no 10.

  • The Clash and Mass Media Messages from the Only Band That Matters
THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

Previously, she was Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences and served as Chair of Engineering Technology Department from 1995-2002. Since arriving at Western Washington University in 1988, her primary teaching assignments have been in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program and in the development of the communication skills of engineering technology students; her research interests have been in the materials science of musical instruments, development of concurrent engineering curricula, development of devices for the differently-abled and in finite element analysis of complex components. She is keenly interested in enhancing the diversity of the students studying in the sciences, mathematics and technology. She received both her MS and BS degrees from the University of Montana/Montana Tech and previously worked for many years in industry primarily developing instrumentation systems and advanced materials. Page 12.1469.1 Page © American Society for Engineering Education, 2007 The Sound of Materials: Creating Excitement for Materials Engineering and Science in Engineering Technology Programs Abstract During the past four years the materials engineering aspects of musical instrument design have been incorporated into our Introductory Materials Engineering course to excite students about materials engineering and science and to help them understand various complex behaviors of materials, such as anisotropic properties or specific stiffness, through familiar, practical applications. The answer to a seemingly simple question about why a Stradivarius violin sounds the way it does is found more in complex materials properties than in many other basic design constraints such as geometry.

A day with Walden It's 9 a.m. at the biggest pub in Estonia, in the biggest summer resort in the country, but it's raining, the room is filled with harmonicas and lederhosen, we've been driving since 6 o'clock, and the coffee machine is broken. Our harmonica festival shows aren't scheduled to start before the evening but our harpist has insisted on entering the competition; Indrek's jittery and I'm sleepy, yet he walks away with silver. A fellow musician points to my T550 and says: "The bass lines were pre-recorded, right?" "Nah, just me and my Walden." Dennis, the American whom we're to back that evening, is still recovering from a late night, so we're off for pancakes in the rain. Ten hours later Dennis and I are on the concert hall stage with my guitar partner Martin, winging it in front of TV cameras and trying to look as worried as the black-tie audience. "I learned a new song tonight," Dennis brags backstage. "We learned two," I shoot back. "Well, I'll have two more for you tomorrow," he grins. A grey-haired gentleman in an impeccably white suit walks up and says,"Thank you very much! My wife insisted that I tell you: your playing Photo: Leif Laaksonen on that slow blues was so beautiful, it brought tears to our eyes..

1 2 Playlist August 16th 2015 Special Guests John Pizzarelli. Vince Calandra, Dave Morrell 9am/Open The Beatles - Good Morning Good Morning - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Based on a Kellogg’s Cornflakes television commercial John heard while sitting at the piano and feeling a bit “stuck” trying to write something for “Sgt. Pepper.” Paul plays a stinging guitar solo and flourishes with his right-handed Fender Esquire. The basic rhythm track was recorded on February 8, 1967 in eight takes, four of them complete. 3 Overdubs followed with John’s lead vocal and Paul’s bass added on February 16. A horn section consisting of members of the Brian Epstein-managed band Sounds Inc. (previously Sounds Incorporated) was brought in on March 13. Sounds Incorporated had been one of the opening acts on the Beatles’ 1964 and 1965 tours. The Beatles - I’m Only Sleeping - Revolver (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Written by John and Paul at Kenwood, John’s estate in Weybridge, in one writing session. Recording of the backing rhythm track began at 11:30 p.m. on April 27, 1966. John recorded his lead vocal on April 29. Both the vocal and backing track were recorded at variable speed. It was during the recording of “I’m Only Sleeping” that The Beatles discovered the “backwards guitar.” On May 5, 1966, as the band continued working on the song, George painstakingly transcribed the notes in his guitar solo and flourishes and then wrote them out backwards. He then played them in that reverse order.

1967: A Year In The Life Of The Beatles History, Subjectivity, Music Linda Engebråten Masteroppgave ved Institutt for Musikkvitenskap UNIVERSITETET I OSLO November 2010 Acknowledgements First, I would like to express my gratitude towards my supervisor Stan Hawkins for all his knowledge, support, enthusiasm, and his constructive feedback for my project. We have had many rewarding discussions but we have also shared a few laughs about that special music and time I have been working on. I would also like to thank my fellow master students for both useful academically discussions as much as the more silly music jokes and casual conversations. Many thanks also to Joel F. Glazier and Nancy Cameron for helping me with my English. I thank John, Paul, George, and Ringo for all their great music and for perhaps being the main reason I begun having such a big interest and passion for music, and without whom I may not have pursued a career in a musical direction at all. Many thanks and all my loving to Joakim Krane Bech for all the support and for being so patient with me during the course of this process. Finally, I would like to thank my closest ones: my wonderful and supportive family who have never stopped believing in me. This thesis is dedicated to my grandparents. There are places I'll remember All my life though some have changed. Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain. All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living, In my life I've loved them all.

1 PLAYLIST APRIL 7th 2013 9AM9AM9AM9AM9AM The Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There – Please Please Me (McCartney-Lennon) FLYING NUN SPOT TO > Lead vocal: Paul Recorded February 11, 1963. A Paul McCartney original, the song was written in one day in September 1962 in the front parlor of 20 Forthlin Road, Allerton (the McCartney family from 1955 to 1964), with John Lennon helping with some of the lyrics. It was recorded under its working title, “Seventeen,” at the marathon recording session that produced the majority of songs for the Beatles’ debut album. A fan favorite, the Beatles recorded “I Saw Her Standing There” eleven times for BBC Radio between March 1963 and May 1964. McCartney has said that his bass line was lifted almost note for note from the obscure Chuck Berry song “I’m Talking About You,” released by Berry in February 1961. The Beatles 1 2 performed “I’m Talking About You” at some of their club shows in 1962 and 1963. It is included on the “Live! At The Star Club” CD. Specially selected by Capitol Records staff members to be the B-side of the American “I Want to Hold Your Hand” single on Capitol in the U.S., replacing “This Boy” for the honor. The first song on the first Beatles LP. On U.S. albums: Introducing… The Beatles (with “1, 2, 3” inexplicably missing from Paul’s count-in) - Vee-Jay LP Meet the Beatles! - Capitol LP The Beatles - It Won’t Be Long – With The Beatles (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John The first original song recorded for their second album, “With The Beatles.” Composed primarily by John in July 1963 with the intention of writing a follow- up single to the as yet unreleased “She Loves You.” The lyrical similarity to the chorus of “She Loves You” (both songs contain the phrase “yeah, yeah, yeah”) was no accident.
