Malcolm Price (1939-2017) - forgotten first beatnik folk musician in Cornwall Acknowledged as the first beatnik folk musician to visit Cornwall by veteran folkie Wizz Jones, Malcolm Price is almost forgotten these days. He was a pioneer of the flatpicking style of guitar in the UK and a huge fan of what we would call ‘Americana’ today, especially its early country roots. Melody Maker called him “the champion of old-timey music” and he was an inspiration to many. Malcolm started his musical journey on harmonica, but this was soon traded for a guitar and he joined the new skiffle craze of the mid-fifties, playing in clubs around Kent. In 1957 he witnessed Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Derroll Adams at the Blues and Barrelhouse Club, Soho, run by Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies.

  • Newbury Street Through to Chantry Street
Andover Town Improvements - Newbury Street through to Chantry Street www.testvalley.gov.uk www.hants.gov.uk Hampshire County Council, working with Test Valley Borough Council, has been developing ideas to improve the area at the top of the town from Newbury Street, along the upper High Street and part of Chantry Street. The scheme aims to enhance the area with improvements for pedestrians and cyclists to make it easier to access shops and services at the top of the town. The design and materials will reflect the character of this part of the town and its historic importance. Introduction Background to the scheme The Andover Town Access Plan (2012, ref CW3.4b) has highlighted the need to improve the environment at the top of Andover St. Mary’s the town for shoppers, pedestrians and cyclists. The Andover College Church Town Access Plan was developed to help plan for better Leisure connection between the town and its facilities. Centre The local community and immediate businesses were invited during the summer of 2013 to attend a Community Street Audit (CSA) of the Upper High Street. The audit highlighted the need to address the narrow footways to allow better and Chantry safer pedestrian access to the shops and facilities along its Centre route and into the main shopping area. Improvements to the top of the town are proposed to assist Guildhall the regeneration initiative for the town centre which recognises the importance of specialist / independent traders and the potential to enhance the vitality and viability of businesses and retail activity in this part of the town.

AC 2007-297: THE SOUND OF MATERIALS: CREATING EXCITEMENT FOR MATERIALS ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS Kathleen Kitto, Western Washington University Kathleen L. Kitto is the Associate Dean for the new College of Sciences and Technology at Western Washington University. Previously, she was Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences and served as Chair of Engineering Technology Department from 1995-2002. Since arriving at Western Washington University in 1988, her primary teaching assignments have been in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program and in the development of the communication skills of engineering technology students; her research interests have been in the materials science of musical instruments, development of concurrent engineering curricula, development of devices for the differently-abled and in finite element analysis of complex components. She is keenly interested in enhancing the diversity of the students studying in the sciences, mathematics and technology. She received both her MS and BS degrees from the University of Montana/Montana Tech and previously worked for many years in industry primarily developing instrumentation systems and advanced materials. Page 12.1469.1 Page © American Society for Engineering Education, 2007 The Sound of Materials: Creating Excitement for Materials Engineering and Science in Engineering Technology Programs Abstract During the past four years the materials engineering aspects of musical instrument design have been incorporated into our Introductory Materials Engineering course to excite students about materials engineering and science and to help them understand various complex behaviors of materials, such as anisotropic properties or specific stiffness, through familiar, practical applications. The answer to a seemingly simple question about why a Stradivarius violin sounds the way it does is found more in complex materials properties than in many other basic design constraints such as geometry.

A day with Walden It's 9 a.m. at the biggest pub in Estonia, in the biggest summer resort in the country, but it's raining, the room is filled with harmonicas and lederhosen, we've been driving since 6 o'clock, and the coffee machine is broken. Our harmonica festival shows aren't scheduled to start before the evening but our harpist has insisted on entering the competition; Indrek's jittery and I'm sleepy, yet he walks away with silver. A fellow musician points to my T550 and says: "The bass lines were pre-recorded, right?" "Nah, just me and my Walden." Dennis, the American whom we're to back that evening, is still recovering from a late night, so we're off for pancakes in the rain. "I learned a new song tonight," Dennis brags backstage. "We learned two," I shoot back. "Well, I'll have two more for you tomorrow," he grins.
