Performa Announces the Winner of the Malcolm Mclaren Award
PERFORMA ANNOUNCES THE WINNER OF THE MALCOLM MCLAREN AWARD November 25, 2013 New York, New York – Performa is pleased to announce the winner of the second edition of the Malcolm McLaren Award, Ryan McNamara. Following in the spirit of McLaren, a champion of the young and bold, the prize is awarded each Performa biennial to an artist who demonstrates the most innovative and thought-provoking performance during the biennial. The award was presented by artist Christian Marclay at the Performa 13 Grand Finale. The evening – hosted by writer Glenn O’Brien– celebrated both the closing of the biennial as well as the 30th Anniversary of McLaren’s maverick album, Duck Rock. McNamara received both a cash prize of $10,000, sponsored by The Vinyl Factory, along with an award created by designer Marc Newson in honor of his performance, MEƎM: A STORY BALLET ABOUT THE INTERNET. A jury consisting of artist and Performa veteran Adam Pendleton, writer Linda Yablonsky, and Issue Project Room’s Lawrence Kumpf selected the award winner. The jury noted: “Performa is to be congratulated for this year's exciting program. It was dedicated to exploring a broad range of different kinds of performance and bringing known and unknown artists to our attention from New Delhi-based Raqs Media Collective to the Norwegian artist Tori Wrånes.” Ryan McNamara fulfills the goal of the Performa Commissions for an artist to use the time and support provided by Performa to break new grounds in their work, and to take performance in new directions. With MEƎM McNamara also turned the idea of spectatorship on its head, furthering the passivity of the audience by literally moving them around the theater, one by one, on specially designed chairs, echoing the ways in which we surf the web, constantly moving between images. -

Rappers and Linguistic Variation a Study of Non-Standard Language in Selected Francophone Rap Tracks
Martin Verbeke March 2016 Rappers and Linguistic Variation A study of non-standard language in selected francophone rap tracks University of Stirling Doctoral thesis Academic years 2011-2016 1 Abstract This thesis examines the use of non-standard language, more specifically non-standard vocabulary (i.e. slang, verlan, colloquialisms, vulgarities, foreign borrowings, and abbreviations), in a corpus of selected francophone rap tracks in order both to quantify its use and to investigate what determines its variation, focusing on the impact of diachronic, diatopic, gender and diaphasic determinants. The methodology relies on a lexicographic analysis to produce quantitative results which are then analysed qualitatively by means of extract analyses and semi-structured interviews with francophone rappers. To answer the research questions, the thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter presents the aforementioned methodology and the overall quantitative results from the thesis, while also introducing the notion of variation, which is then tackled in the last four chapters. The second chapter investigates diachronic determinants from two perspectives: different generations of rappers (1990/1991, 2001 and 2011) and one artist throughout his career (Akhenaton in 1991, 2011 and 2011). The third chapter looks at diatopic determinants, analysing the impact of ethnic and spatial origins. Three ethnic origins are compared (rappers of French, Algerian and Senegalese origin), together with three cities (Marseille, Paris and Brussels) and three departments (Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne). The fourth chapter focuses on gender determinants, with a comparison of male versus female rappers that also takes broader gender performativity into account. Finally, the fifth chapter examines the impact of diaphasic determinants. -

All rights reserved. Getting Hip to the Hop: A Rap Bibliography/Discography Leta Hendricks ABSTRACT. This bibliographic/discographic essay examines works which may be used to develop a core collection on Rap music. A selected bibliography and discography is also provided. INTRODUCTION Research interest has recently emerged in the popular African-American musical idiom known as Rap and continues to grow as social and cultural scholars have embarked on a serious study of Rap music and culture. Therefore, the student, scholar, and general library patron may seek information on Rap and its relationship with the African-American community. During the 1970's, libraries rushed to include in their holdings culturally diverse materials, especially materials on African-American history, literature, and culture. Today, emphasis is placed on cultural diversity, Rap is sometimes deemed to be low art and may be overlooked in the collecting of diverse materials. However, Rap has already celebrated its sixteenth anniversary and, like Rock and Roll, Rap is here to stay. Rap music research is difficult because (1) the librarian or information provider generally lacks knowledge of the category,' and (2) primary/ephemeral materials are not widely accessible.2 This selective bibliographic and discographic essay examines a variety of Rap resources and materials including biographies, criticisms, discographies, histories, recordings, and serials to help fill the Rap knowledge and culture gap and assist in the development of a core collection on Rap music. -

MC Solaar – Eine Zeitreise Ein Blick Auf 27 Jahre Rap-Kunst
