Precious but Not Precious UP-RE-CYCLING
The sounds of ideas forming , Volume 3 Alan Dunn, 22 July 2020 presents precious but not precious UP-RE-CYCLING This is the recycle tip at Clatterbridge. In February 2020, we’re dropping off some stuff when Brigitte shouts “if you get to the plastic section sharpish, someone’s throwing out a pile of records.” I leg it round and within seconds, eyes and brain honed from years in dank backrooms and charity shops, I smell good stuff. I lean inside, grabbing a pile of vinyl and sticking it up my top. There’s compilations with Blondie, Boomtown Rats and Devo and a couple of odd 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters soundtracks. COVER (VERSIONS) www.alandunn67.co.uk/coverversions.html For those that read the last text, you’ll enjoy the irony in this introduction. This story is about vinyl but not as a precious and passive hands-off medium but about using it to generate and form ideas, abusing it to paginate a digital sketchbook and continuing to be astonished by its magic. We re-enter the story, the story of the sounds of ideas forming, after the COVER (VERSIONS) exhibition in collaboration with Aidan Winterburn that brings together the ideas from July 2018 – December 2019. Staged at Leeds Beckett University, it presents the greatest hits of the first 18 months and some extracts from that first text that Aidan responds to (https://tinyurl.com/y4tza6jq), with me in turn responding back, via some ‘OUR PRICE’ style stickers with quotes/stats. For the exhibition, the mock-up sleeves fabricated by Tom Rodgers look stunning, turning the digital detournements into believable double-sided artefacts. -

The Punk and Post-Punk Worlds of Manchester, London, Liverpool and Sheffield, 1975–80
Book Review: Networks of Sound, Style and Subversion: The punk and post-punk worlds of Manchester, London, Liverpool and Sheffield, 1975–80 blogs.lse.ac.uk/lsereviewofbooks/2015/04/22/book-review-networks-of-sound-style-and-subversion-the-punk- and-post-punk-worlds-of-manchester-london-liverpool-and-sheffield-1975-80/ 22/04/2015 This book examines the birth of punk in the UK and its transformation, within a short period of time, into post-punk. Deploying innovative concepts of ‘critical mass’, ‘social networks’ and ‘music worlds’, and using sophisticated techniques of ‘social network analysis’, it teases out the events and mechanisms involved in punk’s ‘micro-mobilisation’, its diffusion across the UK and its transformation in certain city-based strongholds into a variety of interlocking post-punk forms. Alex Hensby thinks this is a fine piece of work; a book that is driven by the author’s palpable knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. Networks of Sound, Style and Subversion: The punk and post-punk worlds of Manchester, London, Liverpool and Sheffield, 1975–80. Nick Crossley. Manchester University Press. February 2015. It might be bad form to begin a book review with praise for another, but one of my favourite reads from last year was Clothes, Music, Boys by Viv Albertine. As a member of the London art college/squatter scene in the mid-1970s which spawned groups such as the Sex Pistols, the Clash and her band the Slits, Albertine’s memoir offers a particularly vivid personal account of how the punk movement assembled itself. On reading, one line in particular stood out: having been being invited to rehearse with Johnny Thunders’s seminal band the Heartbreakers, Albertine wrote “I was scared. -
Branding the Iconic Ideals of Vivienne Westwood, Barack Obama, and Pope Francis
PUNK, OBAMACARE, AND A JESUIT: BRANDING THE ICONIC IDEALS OF VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, BARACK OBAMA, AND POPE FRANCIS AIDAN MOIR A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION & CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2021 © Aidan Moir, 2021 Abstract Practices of branding, promotion, and persona have become dominant influences structuring identity formation in popular culture. Creating an iconic brand identity is now an essential practice required for politicians, celebrities, global leaders, and other public figures to establish their image within a competitive media landscape shaped by consumer society. This dissertation analyzes the construction and circulation of Vivienne Westwood, Barack Obama, and Pope Francis as iconic brand identities in contemporary media and consumer culture. The content analysis and close textual analysis of select media coverage and other relevant material on key moments, events, and cultural texts associated with each figure deconstructs the media representation of Westwood, Obama, and Pope Francis. The brand identities of Westwood, Pope Francis, and Obama ultimately exhibit a unique form of iconic symbolic power, and exploring the complex dynamics shaping their public image demonstrates how they have achieved and maintained positions of authority. Although Westwood, Obama, and Pope Francis initially were each positioned as outsiders to the institutions of fashion, politics, and religion that they now represent, the media played a key role in mainstreaming their image for public consumption. Their iconic brand identities symbolize the influence of consumption in shaping how issues of public good circulate within public discourse, particularly in regard to the economy, health care, social inequality, and the environment. -

Punk and New Wave MUSC-21600: the Art of Rock Music Prof
Punk and New Wave MUSC-21600: The Art of Rock Music Prof. Freeze 9 November 2016 The Origins of Punk • Mid-to-late 1970s: rise of corporate rock • AOR Radio; the “big” album (e.g., Frampton Comes Alive!) • RIAA’s “Platinum” Record and stylistic conservatism • Punk’s precursors • Garage bands (1960s) • Underground bands • Stooges (performance confrontation), Velvet Underground (aesthetic confrontation) • New York Dolls • Hard-driving rock + disaffected lyrics + Glam rock • “Personality Crisis” (New York Dolls, 1973) prefigures punk basics: • Simple forms with rebellious lyrics • Fast tempos, driving eighth notes, rock backbeat • Dominance of the riff • Harmonic simplicity (I – IV – V; apparent in 3-note bass) • Talent is optional; passion is essential • Rejection of overt moves to court commercial popularity The New York Scene Begins • Patti Smith • Poetry recitations to simple musical accompaniment • Rejection of traditional femininity • “Gloria (In Excelsis Deo)” (Patti Smith, 1975) • Equates sexual (lesbian?) and religious ecstasy (cf. Van Morrison, “Gloria”) • Latin for Glory to God in the Highest • The title of the Greater Doxology in the Catholic Mass • Begins w/recitation over bluesy accompaniment • Builds intensity: gradual increase in tempo (obvious symbolic import) • Climaxes in an energetic chorus • CBGB & OMFUG • Ramones • Retro rebels: t-shirts, leather jackets, jeans, teenage-oriented lyrics • “I Wanna Be Sedated” (Ramones, 1978) • Punk meets catchy pop melodies (“sick bubblegum music”) • Lyrics about drug-induced insanity
