From the dust jacket: ‘“Combat over Spain” is one of the few first-hand accounts of the Spanish Civil War, and is the only one published in England to be written from the Nationalist point of view’. Lerma was a bomber and fighter pilot for the duration of the war, flying 278 missions. Aitken, the son of Lord Beaverbrook, joined the RAFVR in 1935, and flew Blenheims and Hurricanes, shooting down 14 enemy aircraft. Dust jacket just creased at the head and tail of the spine. However, he lived in Czechoslovakia only until 1939, when his family moved to Singapore. Stoppard, his mother, and his older brother were evacuated to India shortly before the Japanese invasion of Singapore in 1941; his father, Eugene Straussler, remained behind and was killed. In 1946, Stoppard's mother, Martha, married British army officer Kenneth Stoppard and the family moved to England, eventually settling in Bristol. Stoppard left school at the age of seventeen and began working as a journalist, first with the Western Daily Press (1954-58) and then with the Bristol Evening World (1958-60). -

The metaphor of the text as a tract of land has been cited by other commentators on copyright history but has not been examined closely. Working through a series of writings on imitation and derivative use, the article shows how the metaphor seemed initially to provide an ideal basis for demanding stronger copyright protection and for policing piracy and derivative uses more aggressively, but turned out, in some writ- ers’ hands, to offer yet another means of portraying the literary marketplace as endlessly expansive. -

M. Forster, which Professor Lago gathered from archives all over the world, is one of the prominent features of the collection, with over 15,000 letters. It was assembled in preparation for an edition of selected letters that she edited in collaboration with P. N. Furbank, Forster’s authorized biographer. A similar archive of Forster letters has been deposited in King’s College. The collection also includes copies of the correspondence of William Rothenstein, Edward John Thompson, Max Beerbohm, Rabindranath Tagore, Edward Burne-Jones, D.S. MacColl, Christiana Herringham, and Arthur Henry Fox-Strangways. These materials were also gathered by her in preparation for subsequent books. In addition, the collection contains Lago’s extensive personal and professional correspondence, including correspondence with Buddhadeva Bose, Penelope Fitzgerald, P.N. Furbank, Dilys Hamlett, Krishna Kripalani, Celia Rooke, Stella Rhys, Satyajit Ray, Amitendranath Tagore, E.P. Thompson, Lance Thirkell, Pratima Tagore, John Rothenstein and his family, Eric and Nancy Crozier, Michael Holroyd, Margaret Drabble, Santha Rama Rau, Hsiao Ch’ien, Ted Uppmann, Edith Weiss-Mann, Arthur Mendel, Zia Moyheddin and numerous others. The collection is supplemented by extensive files related to each of her books, proof copies of these books, and files related to her academic career, honors, awards, and memorabilia. Personal material includes her journals and diaries that depict the tenuous position of a woman in the male-dominated profession of the early seventies. -

Life NATIONAL stories Review and Accounts 2007/2008 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH National Life Stories When many people think about history, they think about Over the past two decades it has initiated a series of books and documents, castles or stately homes. Signed: ______________________ Date: ________________________ 2 Abstract This thesis researches the reception of British television political comedy from 1962 to 2012, exploring the continuities and contrasts in viewers’ definitions, interpretations and evaluations of the genre. Television comedy scholarship has privileged the text but this first in-depth study of British political comedy conceptualises television genre as a cultural category, and adopts the method of qualitative historical reception research to explore the different ways that viewers have written about the genre. Political comedy's reception is dominated by discourses of power, and the genre’s comedic references to news and current affairs are consistently invoked in accounts of its effects upon everyday life. The research highlights viewers’ emotive responses in four case studies that place pleasure and displeasure, cultural distinctions, and social affiliations in their historical contexts, arguing that judgments about political comedy’s value, meaning and social effects are related to hierarchies of aesthetics and taste, and their relationship to public issues defined as socially significant. The chapter on That Was The Week That Was discusses beliefs that irreverent comedy could affect British institutions. -

W hen I was really quite young, my parents thought it would be a good idea, for some reason, to pop a paperback of Alan Coren's The Sanity Inspector in my Christmas stocking. Not the first thing you'd think of giving a 13-year-old, perhaps; but it turned out to be an inspired choice, and by New Year's day I thought that Coren was the funniest writer on earth. This was before I read Thurber or Wodehouse or any of the other stylists from whom Coren had obviously learned a thing or two. So I was a little wary when this book turned up; would he still be as funny as I found him all those years ago? I am pleased to report that, despite an introduction by the Coren children so toe-curling that you will have to see a chiropodist after reading it (Victoria's contributions are OK, but Giles's . ), his writing holds up very well. On the whole. It's interesting to chart his development: the Corenesque note is present early, but only makes fitful appearances; it was in the 1970s that he settled into the mode which made his name. (Although, strictly speaking, it was his bestselling spoof diaries of Idi Amin that made his name; a few of those entries are reprinted here, for the historical record. They are unreadable now. Pass them by.) The early pieces here, perhaps over- represented when you consider how he developed, can look like throat-clearing before the main act; and there was something about the 70s that really suited Coren. -
