CHAPTER THREE QUEER KINSHIP IN NEW QUEER INDIA: FROM WADIA’S BOMGAY TO R. RAJA RAO’S “CROCODILE TEARS” ROHIT K DASGUPTA Established academic debates surrounding representation of queer identities in India have time and again illuminated the relationship between sexual (and gendered) subjectivities and the state. More often than not queer individuals themselves have fixated on heteronormativising their queerness. For many, such articulations of “fitting in” with the rest evidence a social/cultural and even political progress, but for radical queer activists and scholars this signifies a backward trend of servicing the neo- liberal agenda. Lisa Duggan (2002, 179) has called this homonormativity and has argued that it is “a politics that does not contest dominant heteronormative assumptions and institutions but upholds and sustains them while promising the possibility of a demobilized gay constituency and a privatized, depoliticized gay culture anchored in domesticity and consumption”. This essay therefore is a mediation of and an argument against this neo-liberal progress which assumes a universal queer identity (see Massad 2007 and Altman 1997) structured around normative family structures (through same sex marriages and adoption) and a de-essentialising of the queer body through hyper masculinity/femininity (Dasgupta and Gokulsing 2014). As recent research has suggested,there are newer ways to understand queerness beyond the state sponsored homonormativities (Puar 2006). Scholar and activist Judith Halberstam’s recent work on Gaga feminism (2012) sifts through popular cultural artefacts to uncover how these media artefacts contain within them a blueprint of dominant (heteronormative/mainstream) culture with its emphasis on stasis, norms and conventions. -

Dual Subordination: Muslim Sexuality in Secular and Religious Legal Discourse in India∗ Aziza Ahmed Abstract Muslim women and Muslim members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community face a specific form of dual subordination in relation to their gender and sexuality. A Muslim woman might seek solace from India’s patriarchal religious judicial structures only to find that the secular system’s patriarchal structures likewise aid in their subordination and create a space for new forms of such subordination. Similarly, a marginalized LGBT Muslim might at- tempt to reject an oppressive religious formulation only to come to find that the secular Indian state might criminalize a particular form of sexuality. This analysis explores how Indian laws “give meaning” to sexuality through the legal structures manifested by state and religious regula- tory bodies and argues that both religious and state legal institutions need to be reformed to create a legal environment that furthers rather than inhibits a full realization of sexual rights. While Bollywood remains the biggest film industry in the world, a new Indian cinema genre is rising nowadays, a cinema that tries to find its position between Bollywood, Western and parallel cinema. One of the striking things of this new Indian film genre, that I call New Indian Cinema, pays attention to the way white Western women are treated in India's contemporary society. New Indian Cinema depicts white Western women as survivors of this tough society they are living in. This representation differs from the way India's popular cinema, Bollywood cinema, has depicted the white Western women until now. From the 1950s onwards, they have been represented as immoral ‘devils’; the opposite of moral Indian women. Although Jane Dark has noticed a development in the representation of white women in Bollywood cinema, it seems that it is New Indian Cinema that contributes to the emancipation of this particular kind of film character in Indian cinema. This thesis is focused on the development of the white Western female character during the last decades. Based on the concepts of whiteness and the male gaze, three New Indian Cinema films have been analysed in order to discover how this new Indian film genre depicts Western women and if this representation contributes to the development of this character. -

Queer theory includes both queer readings of texts and the theorization of queerness itself. Heavily influenced by the work of Lauren Berlant, Leo Bersani, Judith Butler, Lee Edleman, Jack Halberstam and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, queer theory builds upon feminist challenges to idea that gender is a part of essential self and upon gay/lesbian studies close examination of the socially constructed nature of sexual acts and identities. Queer literature is new trend in Indian English Writing. It presents LGBTQ literary panorama in India. It roots in the literary tradition and Indian philosophy. The Indian traditional literature is so ripe with sexually ambiguous characters. The writers like Ruth Vanita, Devdutt Patnaik, Suniti Namjoshi, R. Raj Rao played vital role in this concern of LGBTQ. Indian society doesn’t accept an idea of homosexuality. The Indians think that same – sex – love relationship is a western concept. Homosexuality, same- sex- love has been a part of past Indian culture.
