  • The Kano Durbar: Political Aesthetics in the Bowel of the Elephant
Original Article The Kano Durbar: Political aesthetics in the bowel of the elephant Wendy Griswolda,* and Muhammed Bhadmusb aDepartment of Sociology, Northwestern University, 1810 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, Illinois 60208, USA. E-mail: [email protected] bDepartment of Theatre and Drama, Bayero University Kano, Kano, Nigeria. E-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding author. Abstract Political aesthetics deploy theatrical techniques to unite performers and audience into a cultural community, thereby distracting from conflicts. The Kano Durbar in northern Nigeria demonstrates how the aesthetics of power can promote a place-based political culture. Although power in Kano rests on a wobbly three-legged stool of traditional, constitutional and religious authority, the status quo celebrated by the Durbar holds back ideological challengers like Boko Haram even as it perpetuates distance from the unified nation-state. The Durbar works as a social drama that helps sustain a Kano-based collective solidarity against the threats of ethnic/religious tensions and Salafist extremism. A cultural-sociological and dramaturgical analysis of the Durbar demonstrates how weak sources of power can support one another when bound together in an aesthetically compelling ritual. American Journal of Cultural Sociology (2013) 1, 125–151. doi:10.1057/ajcs.2012.8 Keywords: political aesthetics; place; social drama; Kano; Nigeria; Durbar Introduction While political rituals are expressions of power, what is less often noticed is that they are expressions of place. Bringing this insight to bear on the analysis of these rituals can reveal how they work, what exactly they accomplish, thereby resolving some of the puzzles they present. This article examines the case of the Kano Durbar, a Nigerian ritual that presents a social drama of and for Kano residents, a drama that helps sustain a sense of r 2013 Macmillan Publishers Ltd.

“ONE LINE FLOWS, YEAH I GOT SOME OF THOSE”: GENRE, TRADITION, AND THE RECEPTION OF RHYTHMIC REGULARITY IN GRIME FLOW Alexander Harvey Marsden A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Music Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Jocelyn R. Neal Allen Anderson Mark Katz © 2017 Alexander Harvey Marsden ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Alexander Harvey Marsden: “One Line Flows, Yeah I Got Some of Those”: Genre, Tradition, and the Reception of Rhythmic Regularity in Grime Flow (Under the direction of Jocelyn Neal) In its musical style and performance practices, the British rap genre grime bears the traces of London’s electronic dance music scene, out of which it emerged in the early 2000s. One such trace is grime’s characteristic style of flow—the rhythmic dimensions of a rapper’s delivery of text—and the role that this plays in encouraging grime’s listeners to move. This thesis argues that grime flow exhibits a tendency towards rhythmic regularity, which differentiates it from flow styles that tend toward irregularity. Drawing from music cognition and music-theoretic work on the pleasures of repetition for listeners, particularly in electronic dance music, it asks what listeners find engaging about grime flow’s regularity. It argues, through an analysis of Skepta’s “That’s Not Me,” that grime flow encourages a participatory mode of listening from its audience, which in turn contributes to a broader orientation towards communality in the genre.

  • An Account of the High Population in Kano State, Northern Nigeria
1 An Account of the High Population in Kano State, Northern Nigeria By Aliyu Salisu Barau Department of geography Federal College of Education, Kano, Nigeria PMB 3045 Kano [email protected] Introduction Population is one of the four fundamental features of a state, the other three being territory, sovereignty and government. By and large, population is an important factor in the global as well as local politics, economy and ecology. Indeed, population related issues are nowadays in the forefront of development activities/issues. The principal objectives of this paper is to reveal the following: • The nature and origin of population development in Kano State • The socio- cultural impulses for the maintained high population concentration in Kano State • The prospects for the sustained population growth in Kano state and • To objectively inform compatriots, expatriates and professionals about the peculiar nature of the population of Kano state. • To highlight some of the ecological risks associated with the population pressure stress in the state To achieve these objectives, relevant literature were reviewed and some observations and surveys were made in an attempt to drive home some facts and figures on the character and trends of the population of Kano state. 2 Population Development Theories Myriad demographic theories were developed overtime and over places to explain the arguments for or against population expansion. Prominent amongst such include those theories of Adam Smith who was vehemently optimistic of the need for population growth to sustain the emerging industrial muscle of Europe in the 19th century. Thomas Robert Malthus (in the 19th century too) was pessimistic of exploding population when the commensurate food supply was not in sight.
