Alison Richards and Robert Stephens

Bio: Kick back at the Club with torch songs and standards from the ‘30s to right now ... as Alison Richards and Robert Stephens wow you with songs of love, longing and the whole damn thing.

Alison’s big velvety smooth voice and multi-instrumentalist Robert’s magic fingers make an irresistible combination. A wonderful way to finish your Saturday night in style!

Alison fronted her first band in Canberra at the age of 14. Her musical journey since then has taken her from Newport, Rhode Island to Newport, , by way of Brisbane, Perth and Lightning Ridge ... Alison’s onstage appearances with The Mogadonnas, The Doris Daze, The Sunset Sisters and long running cabaret duo Joy and Joy have given her a wide repertoire and a love for the songs that last.

Musical director Robert has worked as an actor and musician in most Australian states. Robert is a regular MD for theatre outfit Perilous Productions and plays piano accordion, piano and ukulele around town with bands including Betty’s Driving Force and The Sophisticated Hulas.

This is Alison and Robert’s first appearance together. A tasty blend with plenty of bottle age, just waiting to be uncorked and savoured slowly.

Andy Baylor

Bio: Well known musician, Andy Baylor, has spent years honing his own unique sound on the fiddle. He has incorporated country fiddling, blues, swing and, in particular, Cajun music. Andy has learned many subtleties of style and technique in- person from Cajun masters on his numerous trips to the region and, in this workshop, he will be teaching a Cajun waltz and a Ca- jun two-step. He will discuss various aspects of the music including bowings, blues influence, history and Cajun ‘feel’. The workshop is open to fiddlers of all standards, from beginners to advanced, as well as guitarists or other string players.

The joyous music of the Cajuns is easily accessible, immediate and real, and offers a great opportunity for people to get together and enjoy a taste of Southern Louisiana funky fiddle style right here in downtown Newport.

Blow it out ya brass

Bio: Blow it Out ya Brass Band play a diverse collection material from New Orleans R’n’B to Church Hymns and Jazz Standards.

Made up from a large pool of mostly Melbourne Jazz players, the band has no chordal in- struments so the ensemble sound of the brass ( trumpet / saxophone / sousaphone / trombone / drums) makes for a brass band, rather than a Jazz Band sound.

All the players have a love and respect for the ‘New Orleans’ tradition of funky Brass Bands, so this is central to the music and approach. Newport Folk Festival 2012 16

Bruce Williams

Bio: Bruce Williams was in high school when he heard the music that was to shape his life. An early obsession with Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan led to the discovery of Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Norman Blake, Doc Watson and countless other American blues and country perform- ers.

Since that time he has played in numerous bands, and performed solo whenever the whim took him. Whilst he enjoys a range of musical styles, the allure of American blues and roots music is never far from his mind.

He was a founding member of the infamous Turkeyslappers and Diddley Daddies and has ap- peared as a sideman on numerous albums.

This solo album is a return to the folk values that continue to shape him. Essentially, it’s a field recording (well kitchen table recording). It’s just him with two friends who popped in to accompany on two songs. Bruce plays all instruments other than the blues harp and electric guitar heard on two tracks.

The tunes are just essentially folk tunes he likes to play, with some originals thrown in for good luck.

Hope you enjoy.

Dave Isom and the Salty Dogs

Bio: The Salty Dogs are a group of experienced Melbourne musicians with more years and beers under their belts than they would or could remember.

With Captain Dave Isom at the helm (Original Bushwackers, Sundowners) commanding vo- cals and cat’o’nine tails to keep the rabbly musical crew in order, they usually consist of ‘Leg- end of the Lake’ Ewen Baker on fiddle , mandolin, bass and guitar, Ian (Scurvy Dog) Tritt on mandolin, fiddle and dollar whistle(ex- penny whistle with allowance for inflation and dismal gurnsey),Alex Black (Parradiddle, Celts, John Shuman’s Vagabond crew)on fiddle when he’s spent enough time in the ‘scuppers with the hose pipe on him’ sobering up, Don Gula on double bass and counting plundered dubloons plus whoever else is available to play music when and if they are released from the de-tox unit ashore.

The music is a salty mix of sea songs ( no, knot shanties)Irish, jigs reels and hairs, peppered with Australian songs , stories and humour all washed down with their daily ration of ship’s rum. Dirty Birds

Bio: In the early 1920s a young Appalachian Banjo player called Moran Lee ‘Dock’ Boggs fell under the musical spell of a travelling blues guitarist and singer calling himself ‘Go Lightning’. Dock Boggs went onto record a handful of sides for Brunswick Records in New York before disap- pearing into obscurity until his rediscovery during the 1960s American folk revival. Dock is remembered for his unique combination of Appalachian old time music and African-American blues. The Dirty Birds primal and high-energy hybrid of country blues and old-time and blue- grass music (bluesgrass maybe?) is a tribute to the legacy of Dock Boggs and Go Lightning. Mike Compton (hosted by Bruce Williams)

Bio: Mike Compton has become one of the most influential mandolin players in acoustic music today. His personal contribution as performer and teacher has enriched and helped shape the emerging genres of both bluegrass and old time music.

In 1984, when Pat Enright and Alan O’Bryant began to put together the Nashville Bluegrass Newport Folk Festival 2012 38

Band, Mike Compton was their first choice on mandolin. For the next several years, Mike trav- eled with NBB, performing at festivals, clubs and venues around the world. He appeared on NBB’s first four recordings.

Mike met John Hartford at the Tennessee Homecoming Festival in ‘94 and became a sideman for Hartford, whom he performed with until Hartford’s death in June 2001. He had the honor of playing on Hartford’s last few CDs including ‘Hamilton Ironworks’. Mike worked with other musicians during those years as well, often with David Grier; he was in and out of the studio fre- quently, working with Chris Jones, Bill Evans, Keith Little and others, and in 2000 was invited to play on a soundtrack that would ultimately sell over 7 million copies: O Brother, Where Art Thou?

O Brother, Where Art Thou? went platinum and waltzed away with the Best Bluegrass Al- bum Grammy and IBMA’s Album of the Year. The Nashville Bluegrass Band joined the O Brother CD promotional tour that year, and in 2002 the follow up ‘Down From The Mountain’ tour. With NBB one of the acts, Mike played in the house band that backed up most of the performers.

The Mississippi State Senate honoured Mike in 2002 with a special honour commending his musical accomplishments.

Songwriting Session

Bio: Greg Jenkins

Greg’s performing career started early; he occasionally sang unaccompanied (and uninvited) at ‘Show and Tell’ in primary school.

He has been writing songs on and off for decades, most of which have mercifully been forgotten.

In the last few years he has been involved in a songwriting group which evolved into TISSG*. Partly as a result, he humbly submits that his songs have vastly improved.

Writing in blues, folk and country styles he aims to entertain, often amuse and gently inform.

Ride with Cloudy on his long journey to overcome a compulsion to sing show tunes

Sympathise with Sunny as he struggles with the inner demons that compel him towards ob- scure beat poetry.

Can these wannabe legends overcome their pasts to perform simple folk blues like the sim- ple blues folk they are?

Witness the story behind the story, the hysteria behind the history, the horror behind the hy- perbole that is SUNNY AND CLOUDY!!!!!! Newport Folk Festival 2012 56

Last year they recorded a CD and are working on a follow-up this Winter. Their repertoire is an ever evolving mix of original tunes and songs, their own arrangements of traditional songs, and interpretations of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Leonard Cohen and the Wainwright clan classics. Their original songs and instrumentals draw on personal experiences, occasionally weaving in themes from Australian cinema and poetry to portray Australia’s light and dark side.

Ted Smith

Bio: Ted has been playing guitar and singing for many years, going way back to his group days in Liverpool and half a lifetime at sea, he draws his material from early rock & roll, the blues, country, bluegrass and beyond. His early musical influences were Scotty Moore, Al Casey, the incomparable Cliff Gallup and of course ‘where it’s at’, the ‘fingerpickers’, Chet, The Doc, Merle Travis etc, ‘...but there are heaps of really good players on the scene now to inspire and learn from’. Ted really enjoys writing and reciting whimsical poetry too.

Since joining the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club in 2004, Ted has been studying with Inter- nationally renowned guitarist Nick Charles. This has developed Ted’s playing so that he now includes lovely ragtime and quiet blues tunes in his repertoire. Ted plays regularly at Newport Fiddle and Folk Club, The Substation Artists Market, open-mics wherever he can find one, local community events, and is an established performer at the Newport Folk Festival.

The Timbers

Bio: THE TIMBERS are a high energy four piece band formed in Adelaide in 2009. Their driving rhythms will take you over, as they propel you in fast forward to the gritty edges of roots, folk, and gypsy punk. Their explosive start in the Adelaide music scene is worthy recognition of this bands ability to marry exceptional musicianship with highly accomplished songwriting.

The instrumentation of this band is quite unique with vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Simon Basey also playing the bass lines utilising foot operated bass pedals and Benjamin Roberts on dexterous lead guitar, backing vocals, tin whistle, stomp box and foot tambourine. The quartet is rounded out with the beautifully crafted violin lines and subtle backing vocals of Sarah O’Brien and the stirring rhythmic grooves of percussionist Craig Atkins on cajon, djembe, congas, and didgeri- doo.

Their style has a distinctive folk rock groove reminiscent of musical influences such as The Pogues, Iron and Wine, The Mountain Goats, and Mumford and Sons. Their high energy per- formances, relevance and musicianship gives them the drive and determination to aspire to the accomplishment of those mentioned as muses.

Trugo

Bio: Trugo is a ‘true blue aussie game’ played on a grass court by hitting rubber rings with a wooden mallet from one end of the green to goal posts at the other.

The game was invented by Thomas Grieves of Yarraville in 1926. Inspired by the skylark- ing behaviour of fellow workmen at the Newport railway yards hitting train components around the workshop he devised a game he called Tru-Go.

This unique local sport of Melbourne is played in the suburbs of Ascot Vale, Brunswick, Footscray, Port Melbourne, Sandridge, South Melbourne and at the home of Trugo, Yarraville.

With the changing population in these areas and the traditional players of retired persons on the decline, Trugo needs new players to keep the sport alive. So come along and bring the kids for an opportunity to take part in this unique local sport of Melbourne. Newport Folk Festival 2012 61

Vincent Burke

Bio: I have spent 35 years as an activist working and living in the grandeur of emerald rainforests. I have travelled throught the desert sand dunes and the dry gullies of the beautiful ruby red interior of Australia. But nothing prepares you for the ancient stillness and the meeting of the present with the still evolving past, when you sail into the crystal amethyst of Antarctica, with the comic penguin, the playful seal, the endurance of the seabirds and the majesty of the whales. Newport Folk Festival 2012 64

This frozen land has exhilarated me with its mirror flat waters at sunrise, its wildlife on the move and it powerful, stormy seas. Along with this, I have experienced the horror of sailing along a path of intestines, flensed out of the dying whales and spewed out the back of the Nis- shin Maru....I will not rest until the last whaling ship is driven out of the Southern Ocean.
