  • ANDREW PENDLEBURY Biography
ANDREW PENDLEBURY Biography Frequently cited as one of the finest guitarists in the nation, Andrew Pendlebury has always seemed destined towards a career in music. From age four he studied violin under the auspicious direction of Nathan Gutman, and at an early age played Vivaldi and Bach with the prowess of someone far beyond his tender years. Andrew is the son of two celebrated Australian artists, Laurence Scott Pendlebury and Nornie Gude . It is little wonder that Andrew also possesses a great talent with the brush, and that his sister Anne was encouraged in her career as an actress with stage and TV credits. After leaving school Andrew set about forging a career for himself in the art world. He held a number of successful exhibitions of his impressionist style works, but music still held his attention. Exposed to Django Reinhardt by a friend of his father who was a dance band guitarist in WW2, and excited by the new sounds evolving from players like Jimi Hendrix bursting onto the scene, Andrew began to focus his creative energy into the guitar. Despite his early classical training, Andrew is a self-taught guitarist and he set about creating a voice for himself through the instrument. He was enthused by players like Lenny Breau, Les Paul, James Burton, Jimmy Bryant and Chet Atkins, but like the painter is inspired by other artforms, Andrew also finds inspiration in the work of many styles of music and instruments. He has broad tastes ranging from a great appreciation of trumpet player Miles Davis to his pop sensibilities towards the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.

  • Running on Empty Music Credits
Music Peter Crosbie "It all comes Runnin' Back" Sung by Terry Serio Music & Words by Peter Crosbie & John Clark Available on Regular Records through WEA Peter Crosbie was the writer and keyboard player for The Dugites. There is an excellent overview of The Dugites here, from which this background material is excerpted: The Dugites formed in Perth in 1978 with a line-up of Lynda Nutter on vocals, Peter Crosbie on keyboards, Gunther Berghoffer on guitar, Phillip Bailey on bass and Clarence Bailey on drums. In 1979 The Dugites released a single "Hit Single"/"Bruce", and toured as the backing band for Dave Warner. The single had been self-financed, but that year they were signed by the now defunct Deluxe label. In 1980 Paul Noonan (ex-Dave Warner's from the Suburbs) replaced Phillip Bailey. Their first album 'The Dugites' was released in August 1980 and reached No. 22 on the Australian Album charts. It went on to attain gold status (35,000 copies sold). Three singles were issued from the album, "In Your Car"/"13 Again" in May 1980, which reached No. 34 on the Australian Singles charts in July, "Goodbye"/"No God, No Master" in July and "South Pacific"/"Gay Guys" in October, which reached No. 90. At the 1980 Countdown Music Awards both The Dugites and Nutter received nominations for 'Best New Talent' (Johnny O'Keefe Memorial Award) and 'Most Popular Female' respectively. In December the band were the opening act for Elton John's concert at the Perth Entertainment Centre. The band's second album, 'West Of The World', produced by Bob Andrews (Graham Parker and the Rumour), was released in July 1981.

Music Carrl and Janie Myriad with Mike Deany Carrl and Janie Myriad were a husband and wife psych-folk duo popular on the Melbourne circuit in the 1970s. Amazingly you can find them on YouTube here, and here, at time of writing. Their album still does the rounds on the second hand circuit, and can be found on CD: One web site provided this information, but we're unable to verify its accuracy: A popular husband & wife duo on the Melbourne circuit in the early 70's, Carrl & Janie went on to form one of our first country/folk/rock bands, the self named Myriad. Some of the players in that band reads like a who's who of Oz rock & included several future members of The Sports including guitarists Andrew Pendlebury & Ed Bates & bassist Rob Glover. Other members of note include Mark Ferrie of The Models & now part of the RokWiz Orchestra, plus Chris Wilson who was in Buster Brown & has played with Broderick Smith for many years For a long time the band held a residency at the famed Station Hotel in Prahran & even had 3 tracks appear on the Live At The Station multi-artist album which came out in 1976 (available elsewhere here if you do a search). By that time Carrl & Janie had separated & Janie reverted to her maiden name Janie Conway, helping to form, with Jane Clifton, another popular band of the late 70's, Stiletto. Something I only just found out is that Janie is also the sister of Mic & Jim Conway of Captain Matchbox/Backsliders fame.
