Examining Gender, Culture and Power in Malaysian Horror Films Lee, Y. B. School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia 11800 Penang, Malaysia ABSTRACT The pontianak is widely recognised as the most dreaded supernatural being in Malay folklore and mythology. Often described as a fearsome mythical creature with vampire-like qualities, she is said to have fangs, possesses ghost-like traits and can only be subdued using a sharp object which is usually a nail struck to the back of her neck. She is also recognised through her high-pitched shrieks, long flowing hair and a fondness for the blood of children. Despite possessing such fearsome and horrifying characteristics, the pontianak peculiarly remains popular among Malaysians as the horror film genre has always been popular among Malaysian and Asian audiences due to its deep roots in religious and superstitious beliefs. Many Asian nations have shared cultural, historical and social characteristics. Cross cultural influences across borders are common in shaping each other’s culture and a number of Malaysian horror films have been influenced by the Noh and Kabuki-influenced ‘shunen’ (revenge) and ‘kaidan’ (ghost mystery) stories. While the horror film is in fact a commercial venture, the genre is also filled with socio-cultural and political contestations. As such, these narratives reflect certain socio-cultural and political anxieties of given moments within the location of the film’s production. This paper therefore examines the pan-Asian cultural influences in the current wave of Malaysian horror. -

A Buddhist has to follow the Four Noble Truth and the Eightfold Path in order to achieve enlightenment which is nirvana. They believe in the rebirth of the soul from the last breath to the liberation of soul which entwines the journey of life from death to karma, to rebirth and finally achieving nirvana. Worshippers of Islam on the other hand have to follow the six Pillars of Faith, the five Pillars of Islam and ihsan which is to do good things in life. They believe in resurrection on the day of Judgement. On this day, Muslims after death will be awaken in the frontiers of barzakh and be judged and placed appropriately in either paradise or hell as promised in the holy Qur’an. By collecting data using documentary method which applied to library materials, the researcher has found that there are still a number of Muslims who were influenced by the traditional beliefs of animism, Hinduism and Buddhism. This is because the Malays were Hindus and Buddhists long before they became Muslim. -

Their refuges remain perched upon wild shores, men and women gathered together in city-states grown fearful of their neighbors. The Mandarin of Xian broods in his many-towered city as the blood sorcerers of Tien Lung scheme and the Shogun of Hell dreams the red dreams of his masters. The grim pikemen of Hohnberg turn away from their former allies in the east, and in the ancient halls of his Gate Citadel the dwarf-king dwells uneasily upon the change of days. In the west, the Shou howl for vengeance. Driven from their lands by the human exiles, locked in never-ending war against the hated interlop- ers and their own rival neighbors, they lack only a leader to make an irresistible tide of their warriors. 'Sundelbolong' As a Mode of Femininity
chapter 4 ‘Sundelbolong’ as a Mode of Femininity Analysis of Popular Ghost Movies in Indonesia Maren Wilger Introduction: Hantu Sundelbolong Indonesian folklore is populated by various kind of ghosts or hantu.1 While they used to haunt the living through ghost stories (cerita hantu), in contempo- rary culture they are presented in multifaceted ways on the silver screen to tell modern ghost stories, and part of the discourse of modernization.2 In this chapter, I start with a short description of the nature of ‘Sundel- bolong’, one of the many vengeful female spirits in Indonesian lore, before providing a brief introduction to the political and cinematic background of 1 Hantu: ‘Spirit’, ‘specter’ (Heuken, 2009: 181). In general terms, ‘hantu’ contains more than the European/Western understanding of ‘spirit’ or the German ‘Geist’. The term hantu is also used to describe possession by demons and presents good and evil supernatural beings. It appears to be insufficient to use Western classifications, such as ‘undead’, ‘spirit’ or ‘vam- pire’ for Southeast Asian beings, since the categories of hantu are much more fluid than the Western ones. While an undead entity in the Western hemisphere is statically characterized as being completely apart from the living—as being dead—, cerita hantu contain the idea that those beings can be tamed and transformed back into a living and human form again. Indeed, hantu Sundelbolong can be transformed back into a human when a knife is driven through her neck. It seems like hantu have greater physical potency and effect the living more than Western spirits, the undead or vampires do. -

There are many people who claim to be experts on vampire lore and legend who will say that they know all about Vlad Tepes and Count Dracula or that they can name several different types of vampiric species. I can do that, too, but that is not how I came to be a known vam- pirologist. Knowing the “who, what and where” is one thing, but knowing and more impor- tantly understanding the “why” is another. -

Malaysian horror films describe the pontianak as a supernatural entity with overflowing hair, vampire-like traits and a beautiful woman capable of seducing, charming and alluring her male victims. Once she has her target trapped, she transforms back into an unsightly pontianak and exacts her vengeance. Her capability of resurrecting from the afterlife and using her sexuality in seeking for death and destruction to those who have wronged her could position her as a villain or antagonist due to the chaos, destruction and murder to those regardless of innocence. Short of being labelled as a vamp or femme fatale, the pontianak continues being stereotyped as oppressive and monstrous for she gains supernatural strength and destablises a film's equilibrium. In short, the pontianak is seen as a threat towards partriachal order and such forms of representations are similarly shared in horror films globally. -
