CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Kent Academic Repository THE WHITE FATHERS’ ARCHIVE IN ZAMBIA 1 Marja Hinfelaar and Giacomo Macola I The archive of the Generalate of the White Fathers (WF) in Rome is a well-known “treasure trove for Africanists of all disciplines.” 2 Owing partly to the availability of a series of published catalogues and guides, 3 it attracts a steady flow of external researchers and figures prominently in the bibliographies of numerous recent works on sub-Saharan African history. What many Africanists might not be aware of, however, is the existence of regional WF’s archives, the holdings of which do not necessarily replicate – and in fact often complement – those of the central Roman deposit. It is to this latter, by and large neglected, category that the archive of the WF’s headquarters in Lusaka, Zambia (WFA- Z), belongs. In the summer of 2001, Fr. It is with "joi inspired by the Holy Spirit" that we gather in this Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Kampala for the opening session of the Council of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops for the Special Assembly for Africa. This is the seventh meeting of the Council and the third to take place on this Continent. I offer cordial greetings to all its members and to the other Bishops who have joined us. This occasion has profound significance not only for the local Churches in Africa but also for the People of God throughout the world. Through my presence here I wish to support both what has already been accomplished and what will be achieved in the days ahead. Praying Vespers together we give visible expression to the bonds of communion which unite the See of Peter and the particular Churches on this Continent, and the reality of that collegialitas effectiva et affectiva gives intensity to our prayer for the African Bishops as they prepare with their flocks for the Special Synodal Assembly. With deep affection in our Lord Jesus Christ, I wish to greet the representatives of the priests, men 2 and women Religious, and seminarians of the Dioceses of Uganda who are with us this evening. -

This is the testimony of Valentina, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide My name is Valentina. I am 19 years old. My parents, both secondary school teachers, were killed in the genocide. Only my elder sister, Ariane, three brothers and I survived. Until 1991 we lived in Burundi as refugees, but my parents decided to return to Rwanda, believing that there was peace. I was still a baby at the time, but I learnt from my elder sister that my father was imprisoned soon after. Following his release, he was appointed a teacher at the Roman Catholic Secondary School in Kabgayi. My mother also taught at the same school. In 1994, when the killings began we fled to the Roman Catholic Church in Kabgayi. The priests requested that the men be separated from the women. The boys too were separated from us. First the men were killed, and then the boys. My mother and I managed to escape the killing, and together we hid. I was only 5 years old. But Ariane had become separated from us. My grandfather joined us at Kabyayi. He arrived in a terrible state, his head and face covered in blood. He had severe injuries to his head, and part of his brain was exposed where his skull had fractured. He died 3 days later, a slow, painful death. I was with him. When he died, my mother buried him. Alone. Without help. I honestly do not know how she managed it. Every other person in the place where we were hiding was afraid to go out, even to help her. -

This was a period in which Africa and our Society experienced some of the most sweeping changes in our history. Reading and research for this period was carried out in London in 2011 and in Rome in February 2012. A dossier of background and working papers, amounting to some 40,000 words, was prepared. In addition, material was included about Missionaries of Africa who served as military chaplains, and who were demobilized between 1945 and 1954. In 1957 the Society included up to 600 former soldiers, of whom one in ten had served as officially designated military chaplains. This fact had much to do with the Society's preparedness for, and expectation of, change. In November 2012 François Richard and Jean-Claude Ceillier proposed that the dossier should form the basis of a volume in the History Series, focussing on the contribution of Léo Volker, superior general from 1957 to 1967.I am grateful to Jean-Claude Ceillier and the History Research team, and to François Richard, Juan-José Oses and Fritz Stenger in the General Archives, Library and Photo Collection at Via Aurélia, for ail their help. -

The Prosecutor v. Emmanuel Rukundo, Case No. ICTR-2001-70-T Summary of Judgement, to be read orally on 27 February 2009 I. Introduction 1. Today the Chamber renders its Judgement in the case of The Prosecutor v. Emmanuel Rukundo. The Chamber will now read its summary of the judgement. The full version of the written judgement will be available in due course and is the authoritative text of the Chamber’s findings and reasoning in this case. The Chamber is unanimous in its judgement, except for the dissenting opinion of Judge Park on one of the legal findings. II. Procedural Background 2. Emmanuel Rukundo was born on 1 December 1959, at Mukingi commune, Gitarama préfecture in Rwanda. Rukundo studied at the Nyakibanda Major Seminary from 1985 until 1991, where he trained to become a priest. He was ordained as a priest on 28 July 1991 and then served as parish priest in Kanyanza Parish in Gitarama préfecture. In February 1993, Rukundo was appointed as military chaplain in the Rwandan Armed Forces. Following this appointment, he was posted to the Ruhengeri and Gisenyi military sectors in May 1993, and then transferred to Kigali in May 1994. He left Rwanda after the defeat of the Rwandan Armed Forces by the Rwandan Patriotic Front in September 1994, and went into exile to Burundi and then later to Europe. 3. In the amended Indictment of 6 October 2006, the Prosecution charged Emmanuel Rukundo with three counts: genocide, and murder and extermination as crimes against humanity. The Indictment charged the Accused with various forms of individual criminal responsibility pursuant to Article 6(1) of the Statute for these crimes. -

The third step at continental level defi- netly indicates a sign of hope both for those who participated in the meeting, as well as for those who, through this report, share with us this fruitful expe- rience, which was held in Namugongo. Together with the lay martyrs from Uganda, we look forward towards the forthcoming Assembly of the African Synod of Bishops. In his message for the occasion, the Holy Father reminded us of the three key words - contemplation, communion and mission - which John Paul II entrusted to CA at Loreto in 2004. He also referred to the “programme” which Paul VI presented to CA laypeople, precisely in Namugongo in 1969 and which is still relevant today.
