Fred Lewis’ major initiatives, many of which call for Initiatives 2 collaboration among justice system partners. Chief Justice Lewis plans to focus his energies on a Fairness & multitude of important issues, Diversity 3 including ensuring optimal Court Interpreter functioning of the courts in Program 5 emergencies; improving the management of cases involving Justice Teaching complex litigation; providing Institute 7 diversity and sensitivity Constitution Day 8 training for judges and court personnel; and standardizing Family Court jury instructions for business Conference 9 and contract disputes. Dispute Resolution Center Chief Justice Lewis’ goals also include securing greater ADA compliance Conference 10 in the courts; establishing a system for evaluating judges; continuing the implementation of unifi ed family court; and developing a statewide Interview with justice teaching program. The article on the Chief Justice’s initiatives Mike Bridenback 12 gives more detail on these critical endeavors. This issue of the DCA Conference 13 newsletter also includes articles on the work of court commissions, committees, and workgroups that will complement and carry out the Personnel Chief Justice’s goals. It’s really a family affair. We have these brothers: Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson. They have their cousin, Mike Love and their neighbor Alan Jardine who plays drums. Their songs are about the beach, paradise, cars, hot rods, California girls. So there’s this theme of California in all of their music and this lifestyle and that’s where they’re from. Their music is a combination of this jazz group called The Four Freshmen. It was a jazz vocal group that sang in really close four part harmony. Brian Wilson just loved this group and he pattern The Beach Boys’ vocal harmonies after this jazz group called The Four Freshmen. Another big part of their music is this surf style that was around them as they were developing as a band. So they adopted this surf style of rock n’ roll, of guitar driven instrumental rock. So you combine these two things, these beautiful four part harmonies with the surf rock and you get The Beach Boys.

This article explores how both informed popular music, which during these years became not only a prominent form of entertainment but also a forum for cultural and social criticism. In particular, through contextual and lyrical analyses of recordings by The Beach Boys, the article identifies patterns of change and continuity in the articulation of countercultural, ecological, and related sensibilities. During late 1966 and early 1967, the group’s leader Brian Wilson and lyricist Van Dyke Parks collaborated on a collection of songs embodying such progressive thinking, even though the music of The Beach Boys had previously shown no such ambitions. In the short term, their efforts floundered as the risk- averse logic of the commercial music industry prompted group members to resist perceived threats to their established profile. Yet in the long term (and ironically in the name of commercial survival), The Beach Boys began selectively to adopt innovations they had previously shunned. Shorn of its more controversial associations, what had formerly been considered high risk had by 1970 become good business as once-marginal environmentalism gained broader acceptability: thus did ‘America’s band’ articulate the flowering, greening, and fading of the counterculture.
