C ............................................................................... 133 PRÓLOGO En el conjunto de la abundante producción intelectual de la EEA San Luis a lo largo de sus 61 años, pocas obras como esta dejan ver la complejidad del trabajo que abordan sus profesionales. Los capítulos de la presente publicación pueden leerse como aportes individuales -si realizamos la lectura habitual destacando de la producción científica y técnica sus conclusiones, descubrimientos, hallazgos y recomendaciones- pero este volumen nos abre las puertas al proceso de construcción del conocimiento proponiendo un recorrido por las diferentes fases de nuestro trabajo y por las preocupaciones de sus protagonistas en cada una de ellas. El lector encontrará resultados novedosos y avances de trabajos aún en desarrollo que constituirán valiosos aportes a la producción (a través del conocimiento de las comunidades de malezas, de los factores de estrés para los cultivos, del conocimiento de fitopatógenos en pasturas o la caracterización de cadenas de valor) acompañados de estudios y reflexiones sobre el estado, importancia y proyección local de otras disciplinas (transgénesis, Nitrógeno o manejo de suelos); podrá vislumbrar el trabajo generalmente oculto que implica desarrollar y validar nuevos instrumentos y métodos necesarios para llevar a cabo ensayos, experimentos y relevamientos necesarios; será testigo de la preocupación por ofrecer nuevas perspectivas y soluciones a problemas actuales (cuenca de El Morro) y del lugar destacado que representa la comunicación y la educación ambiental y científica. En otras palabras, la obra da cuenta del proceso de construcción de conocimiento en función de la utilidad que la sociedad le reconozca, lo que constituye parte esencial de nuestra misión institucional. [email protected] *corresponding author SUMMARY Background: Damage that causes the drying out of grasses of the species Pennisetum clandestinum was reported in the south of Veracruz, which results in economic losses in the livestock sector. Objective: To taxonomically identify the bug species that causes the drying out of P. clandestinum. Methodology: We collected grass bugs across a surface of twenty hectares with an entomological net. The insects were placed in containers with 70% alcohol and were subsequently quantified. We performed the taxonomic identification under a stereo microscope by observing the morphological characteristics and comparing them with those described in the literature. We dissected the abdomen of the insects in order to extract the male and female genitalia. Results. The presence of the chinch bug Blissus leucopterus Say was confirmed in the grasses based on the taxonomic characteristics of the adults and the genitalia, as well as on the shape of the male parameres and aedeagus.

    THE POTENTIAL ROLE OF HETEROPTERAN PREDATORS - GEOCORIS PUNCTIPES (SAY), G. ULIGINOSUS (SAY) (GEOCORIDAE) AND ORIUS INSIDIOSUS (SAY) (ANTHOCORIDAE) IN WARM - SEASON TURFGRASS by SHIMAT VILLANASSERY JOSEPH (Under the direction of S. KRISTINE BRAMAN) ABSTRACT Occurrence, abundance, predatory potential and residual effect of insecticides on the heteropteran predators, big-eyed bugs Geocoris punctipes (Say), G. uliginosus (Say) and the minute pirate bug, Orius insidiosus (Say) were studied in different turfgrass taxa. Evaluation of sweep and vacuum samples collected from 20 residential lawns, revealed a significant influence of grass taxa on abundance of all predatory heteropterans. None of the predatory heteropterans were affected by turfgrass density. Anthocorids increased with increasing turfgrass height and all stages of mirids were more often collected as weed density increased. Anthocorids were most abundant in St.Augustinegrass and showed a strong correlation with the abundance of chinch bugs. Male G. punctipes killed significantly more fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) neonates on bermudagrass and seashore paspalum than on zoysiagrass cultivars, while, Orius demonstrated significant predation on zoysiagrass and bermudagrass cultivars. Fall armyworm mortality was highest on ‘Cavalier’ and least on ‘Sea Isle 1’ and their mortality occurred in the following order: zoysiagrass > seashore paspalum > bermudagrass in the field when different densities of Orius were released. In both pesticide assessment trials, reduced concentrations of chlorpyrifos were toxic to G. uliginosus and G. punctipes as compared to controls. The material was collected by the three zoologists of the expedition, Professor CARLa H. LeINDROTH of Lund, Sweden, and Professor ERNST PALMxN and Dr. HARRY KROGFRUS of Helsingfors, Finland. A large amount of addition- al material was collected by Professor Lindroth in the summer of 1951. Besides the finds from Newfoundland, some finds by Professor Lindroth from the summer of 1951 in southern and southwestern Labrador and in Nova Scotia will be listed here. Collections of Hemiptera Heteroptera were made in 76 localities in different parts of Newfoundland. These localities are indicated on the map (p. 6), based on the map published by Lindroth (1955). Like Lindroth, I have divided Newfoundland into S.E., S.W., N.W., N.E. and central parts (C.). On the basis of the notes of the collectors, I have given brief reports about the ecology of the species found. Notes about the general distribution of the species found in Newfoundland I have compiled from the literature available to me. The majority of the species -I have found have not been men- tioned before from Newfoundland. The most important sources are VAN DuzEE's (1917) and BTATscaruY's (1926) great works.
