If you have ever thought of Toronto as "having a head start", you can forget it. Lately Toronto has been led astray by a newly Americanized group of "Johnny Come Latelies" that talk about creating a Canadian music industry in New York. The battle cry is "Ya gotta record in New York, Baby. It's the BIG TIME" . Unfortunately this small clique is growing and they have lured a few important people to their side. A recent front page article in a Toronto daily talks about the "Toronto Sound" . It further states that to get the "Toronto Sound" , "nearly all Toronto groups go to New York". Pictured in the article are The Big Town Boys , The Secrets , The Ugly Ducklings, Little Caesar and The Consuls, Ritchie Knight and The Midnights, Dune and The Deacons and David Clayton Thomas and The Bossmen . ALL OF WHOM RECORD IN CANADA. If I am wrong , I will gladly apologize . ALL THESE GROUPS RECORD IN CANADA. NOT ONE OF THEM HAS RELEASED A FOREIGN RECORDED SINGLE. It is to be noted here that none of the groups named were responsible for the article. Can the respected daily be blamed for this irresponsibility , or were they misinformed? Could their information have Volume 5. No. 19 come from a SALARIED AMERICAN FINDER who is only a dyed-in-the-wool Canadiani Another member of this clique unfortunately frequented the RPM offices until very re­ cently . He once heard what he thought was a "New York track" and ranted and raved about how great Poet Turned the track was and how much the New York studios had over Toronto. The track was, in fact, done in a Toronto studio. How many more of these people must there be? Songwriter It must be exasperating to the Canadian who worked so hard to create an industry in Canada to know that a few opportunists are ready to sell Canada down the river in the name of the Ottawa: "It's A Dirty Shame" , the recently re ­ Canadian music industry .     CHAPTER ONE MAKING CHANGES HAPPEHAPPENN IN TERRA INCOGNITA A Process of Re-enactment I picked up my New York Times on April 20, 2012 and read that Levon Helm had died. I quietly turned to the obituary page and as I read what was written about this man, memories flooded back to me. The drinking age was twenty-one so we had to sneak in the back door off Yonge Street, Toronto’s main drag. It was a seedy section of the street below Bloor then, lined with strip joints and bars, and because of this it was one of places where you could go and hear exciting music in the early sixties. I was there with my friend, John. The two of us were freshly admitted undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo and anxious to make early marks in life. So we became concert promoters. This was a short career because even then concerts were presented by organized thugs and there was no room for amateurs like us. On one occasion we brought into town a singer who had a number one hit in Canada, Ronnie Hawkins and his band, known then as the Hawks. We got to know Ronnie pretty well and he was kind to us ingénues. About two weeks after the concert we got a phone call from Ronnie’s manager inviting us to come into the city and watch the band play for what he called an interview. So, on a Friday afternoon John and I crammed into our friend Ted’s Porsche 356 and headed down Highway 401.

    I’M NOT THERE (1956-2007) Stephen Scobie Je est un autre—Arthur Rimbaud I’m Not There (2007) In this autumn season of 2007, I can see that I am going to be thinking a lot about the Bob Dylan song known as “I’m Not There (1956).” At least, that is the title given to it on most of its early, bootleg appearances. Now that it has finally been officially released, the sub-title date has been dropped—which is a pity (since it added an element of mystery to the song) but also understandable (since no good explanation of the date has ever been given). “I’m Not There” is perhaps the ultimate Dylan bootleg, and has always been a subject for cult idealization as the most obscure of Dylan’s “lost” songs: a major master- piece that almost no one knows, and which indeed seems to conspire actively against being known. Now, it has become the title of Todd Haynes’s movie I’m Not There, “inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan”—“many” being the operative word. The film is already famous for casting six different actors to play aspects of Dylan at different points in his career. If this strategy is a gimmick, it is a successful one: the film is generating vast amounts of advance publicity, much of it based on the photographs of Cate Blanchett looking, uncannily and androgynously, like 1966 Bob. The film is not due for North American release until late November, though it has played in prestigious festivals like Toronto, New York, and Venice.

    NEWPORT - If you saw the movie "The Last Waltz," Garth Hudson's posture looked familiar Sunday as he played keyboards with the Dixie Hummingbirds - hunched over the organ in a possessed, mad-scientist manner. Hudson played on the veteran gospel group's latest CD and was a featured player during the Apple & Eve Newport Folk Festival. And if you've heard Hudson speak, it all makes sense. He's dedicated much of his life to performing roots music - folk playing, blues, brass arrangements, country and gospel - and passing along his knowledge. Hudson, who grew up in Canada, is a multi-instrumentalist who made his name with The Band in the 1960s until that group's original lineup ended things in 1976. Since then, he's performed in a 1990s version of The Band and with a variety of groups that play an array of styles. And he shares what he knows with younger musicians. During a recent tour of Ireland, Hudson, 67, said he met with Irish musicians and master accordionists (he plays accordion, piano, organ and saxophone) to talk about their craft and ways to improve. "Before I was done, I would get together about 40 minutes worth of tips," he said during an interview at the Folk Festival. One man, a music teacher, came back twice. "We'd have the performance and then sit back after it was over and talk about music, different ways of doing things," he said. "I enjoy helping musicians. It's always been that way." In "The Last Waltz," Robbie Robertson talks about how Hudson billed himself as a music teacher early on, when the group was the Hawks and backed singer Ronnie Hawkins, and later Bob Dylan.

Another dream that came true for Ronnie Hawkins was the opening ofThe Hawks Nest, a non-alcoholic strictly for teens night club.It was always a source of disappointment to Ronnie that he could never perform for the teenagers in downtown clubs because of the age limit.

    7. Name: Mark Lavon “Levon” Helm Years: May 26, 1940 - Present Residence: Woodstock, New York Brief Biography: Helm grew up in Turkey Scratch, a hamlet west of Helena, Arkansas. He was encouraged by his parents to be musical. When he was six, he saw Bill Monroe & his Blue Grass Boys, which ignited the lifelong goal of following a musical career path. He learned to play guitar at age nine and drums at seventeen. Helm met Ronnie Hawkins in 1957 who then asked him to go on tour through Canada in his band. Helm took the opportunity promising his parents he would return to finish high school. Helm’s band sold 750,000 records with hits such as, "Forty Days" and "Mary Lou," as well as appearing on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. The band became tired of Hawkins’s strict control and went on their own to create "Levon and the Hawks" in which Helm sang and drummed. This band was approached by Bob Dylan in 1965 to go on tour with him and help him make his sound more electric. The fans didn’t like this and booed the band. After the tour Levon Helm took a short trip to Arkansas before rejoining the band in Woodstock, New York. They stayed in a large pink house to work on their music, culminating in a new album call Music from Big Pink as well as a new name for themselves called “The Band.” Helm married his wife Sandra Dodd in Woodstock after a seven year courtship. In 1975, he had built a studio in a barn near his permanent residence.

    MAKING THE SCENE: Yorkville and Hip Toronto, 1960-1970 by Stuart Robert Henderson A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada October, 2007 Copyright © Stuart Robert Henderson, 2007 Abstract For a short period during the 1960s Toronto’s Yorkville district was found at the centre of Canada’s youthful bohemian scene. Students, artists, hippies, greasers, bikers, and “weekenders” congregated in and around the district, enjoying the live music and theatre in its many coffee houses, its low-rent housing in overcrowded Victorian walk- ups, and its perceived saturation with anti-establishmentarian energy. For a period of roughly ten years, Yorkville served as a crossroads for Torontonian (and even English Canadian) youth, as a venue for experimentation with alternative lifestyles and beliefs, and an apparent refuge from the dominant culture and the stifling expectations it had placed upon them. Indeed, by 1964 every young Torontonian (and many young Canadians) likely knew that social rebellion and Yorkville went together as fingers interlaced. Making the Scene unpacks the complicated history of this fraught community, examining the various meanings represented by this alternative scene in an anxious 1960s. Grace is the only exception.” I Good morning and good Sunday. I hope that this new day finds you well. I am Rev. Dr. Leon Dunkley and I am honored to serve as minister to North Universalist Chapel Society (or North Chapel) here in Woodstock, Vermont. Today is Sunday, February 28th and the title of this morning’s reflection is The Last Waltz (or The Threshold of Possibility—Part One). It’s sort of a rock and roll sermon. The Band got together in 1960. They called themselves The Hawks back then. And Robbie Robertson wasn’t the leader yet. He had not yet distinguished himself. He was just one of the rest of the guys—Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson. They did eight years of playing bars and doing the club scene. Then, they did eight years of playing larger halls and concert venue. By 1976, it was time to quit. So, they threw a party for themselves, a final concert that was called The Last Waltz and the invited their good friends to come and play. And Ronnie Hawkins came to play. He had been the leader of the group in the 1960s. He sang “Who Do You Love” by Bo Diddley. I walk 47 miles of barbed wire I use a cobra-snake for a necktie I got a brand new house on the roadside Made from rattlesnake hide… Who do you love? It’s a really great song.
