Robbie Robertson and the Band Is Tiff 2019 Opening Night Gala Film July 18, 2019 MEDIA RELEASE. WORLD PREMIERE OF ONCE WERE BROTHERS: ROBBIE ROBERTSON AND THE BAND IS TIFF 2019 OPENING NIGHT GALA FILM Daniel Roher’s deeply personal story of the Canadian music legend’s life, a Crave Original Documentary, will open the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, September 5 Photo credit: Courtesy of TIFF, Photo by Elliott Landy TORONTO — TIFF Co-Heads Cameron Bailey and Joana Vicente announced today that the World Premiere of Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band, Daniel Roher’s touching tale of Robertson’s young life and the creation of one of the most enduring groups in the history of popular music, The Band, will be the Opening Night Gala Presentation for the 44th Toronto International Film Festival® o n Thursday, September 5, at Roy Thomson Hall. The premiere marks the first time a Canadian-made documentary opens the Toronto International Film Festival. The documentary film, directed by Roher (Ghosts of Our Forest), inspired by Robertson’s 2016 memoir, Testimony, tells the moving story of Robertson’s personal journey as he overcame adversity and found camaraderie alongside the four other men who would become his brothers in music, and who together made their mark on music history. Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band blends rare archival footage, photography, iconic songs, and interviews with many of Robertson’s friends and collaborators, including Martin Scorsese, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Peter Gabriel, Taj Mahal, Dominique Robertson, and Ronnie Hawkins. “This is one of Toronto’s great stories of a hometown hero," said Bailey, Artistic Director & Co-Head of TIFF. “From his early years in this city, to the inspiration he took from life on the Six Nations reserve, to the impact he’s had on generations of music lovers, Robertson emerges in Roher’s film as a truly Canadian-made superstar. In our first year as TIFF’s Co-Heads, Joana and I are thrilled to open the Festival with a Canadian story that speaks to the world.” “This stirring documentary takes audiences on a musical journey and shows us just what it takes to build one of the most significant groups in rock history,” said Vicente, Executive Director & Co-Head of TIFF. “Robertson is a Canadian music icon, and his moving story of persistence and passion is the perfect way to begin Festival 2019 for both Cameron and me. We're eager to share the excitement of Opening Night with Toronto’s film lovers, and audiences can expect some very special guests joining us to help celebrate.” “Robertson’s tale is a remarkable reminder of how vision, ambition, and hard work can empower one’s wildest dreams,” said Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band director Daniel Roher. “Robbie took a chance on me, and I will be forever grateful that he rolled the dice on a kid from Toronto to helm his story. Opening the Toronto International Film Festival is beyond some wildest dreams of my own and I am thankful for everyone who believed in me.” “I’m so tremendously honoured that the premiere of Once Were Brothers, inspired by my memoir Testimony, will be the opening movie at TIFF this year, in my hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada,” said Robertson. In a career spanning six decades, Robbie Robertson has continued to create as a songwriter, producer, performer, actor, author, and film composer. His raw talent thrust him into the spotlight and put him at the centre of a cultural revolution, backing Bob Dylan on his notorious 1966 electric world tour and later collaborating with Dylan on the groundbreaking Basement Tapes, then as a member of The Band, inventing the musical hybrid known as Americana with songs like “The Weight,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” Of late, Robertson has been working on a new solo album, due this fall. Made in conjunction with Imagine Documentaries, White Pine Pictures, Bell Media Studios and Universal Music Canada’s Shed Creative, the project is executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Imagine Entertainment Chairmen Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, Justin Wilkes and Sara Bernstein for Imagine Documentaries; White Pines Pictures’ president Peter Raymont, and COO Steve Ord; Bell Media president, Randy Lennox; Jared Levine; Michael Levine; Universal Music Canada president and CEO Jeffrey Remedios; and Shed Creative’s managing director Dave Harris. The film was produced by Andrew Munger, Stephen Paniccia, Sam Sutherland and Lana Belle Mauro. Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band will stream on Crave in Canada later this year. The 44th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 5–15, 2019. TIFF announces more Gala and Special Presentations on July 23. Festival ticket packages start at $110. Purchase packages online at tiff.net/tickets, by phone (416.599.TIFF or 1.888.599.8433), or in person at TIFF Bell Lightbox until August 11 while quantities last. TIFF prefers Visa. CHAPTER ONE MAKING CHANGES HAPPEHAPPENN IN TERRA INCOGNITA A Process of Re-enactment I picked up my New York Times on April 20, 2012 and read that Levon Helm had died. I quietly turned to the obituary page and as I read what was written about this man, memories flooded back to me. The drinking age was twenty-one so we had to sneak in the back door off Yonge Street, Toronto’s main drag. It was a seedy section of the street below Bloor then, lined with strip joints and bars, and because of this it was one of places where you could go and hear exciting music in the early sixties. I was there with my friend, John. The two of us were freshly admitted undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo and anxious to make early marks in life. So we became concert promoters. This was a short career because even then concerts were presented by organized thugs and there was no room for amateurs like us. On one occasion we brought into town a singer who had a number one hit in Canada, Ronnie Hawkins and his band, known then as the Hawks. We got to know Ronnie pretty well and he was kind to us ingénues. About two weeks after the concert we got a phone call from Ronnie’s manager inviting us to come into the city and watch the band play for what he called an interview. So, on a Friday afternoon John and I crammed into our friend Ted’s Porsche 356 and headed down Highway 401.

  • Scobie on I'm Not There
I’M NOT THERE (1956-2007) Stephen Scobie Je est un autre—Arthur Rimbaud I’m Not There (2007) In this autumn season of 2007, I can see that I am going to be thinking a lot about the Bob Dylan song known as “I’m Not There (1956).” At least, that is the title given to it on most of its early, bootleg appearances. Now that it has finally been officially released, the sub-title date has been dropped—which is a pity (since it added an element of mystery to the song) but also understandable (since no good explanation of the date has ever been given). “I’m Not There” is perhaps the ultimate Dylan bootleg, and has always been a subject for cult idealization as the most obscure of Dylan’s “lost” songs: a major master- piece that almost no one knows, and which indeed seems to conspire actively against being known. Now, it has become the title of Todd Haynes’s movie I’m Not There, “inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan”—“many” being the operative word. The film is already famous for casting six different actors to play aspects of Dylan at different points in his career. If this strategy is a gimmick, it is a successful one: the film is generating vast amounts of advance publicity, much of it based on the photographs of Cate Blanchett looking, uncannily and androgynously, like 1966 Bob. The film is not due for North American release until late November, though it has played in prestigious festivals like Toronto, New York, and Venice.

  • Garth Hudson's Posture Looked Familiar Sunday As He Played Keyboards with the Dixie Hummingbirds - Hunched Over the Organ in a Possessed, Mad-Scientist Manner
NEWPORT - If you saw the movie "The Last Waltz," Garth Hudson's posture looked familiar Sunday as he played keyboards with the Dixie Hummingbirds - hunched over the organ in a possessed, mad-scientist manner. Hudson played on the veteran gospel group's latest CD and was a featured player during the Apple & Eve Newport Folk Festival. And if you've heard Hudson speak, it all makes sense. He's dedicated much of his life to performing roots music - folk playing, blues, brass arrangements, country and gospel - and passing along his knowledge. Hudson, who grew up in Canada, is a multi-instrumentalist who made his name with The Band in the 1960s until that group's original lineup ended things in 1976. Since then, he's performed in a 1990s version of The Band and with a variety of groups that play an array of styles. And he shares what he knows with younger musicians. During a recent tour of Ireland, Hudson, 67, said he met with Irish musicians and master accordionists (he plays accordion, piano, organ and saxophone) to talk about their craft and ways to improve. "Before I was done, I would get together about 40 minutes worth of tips," he said during an interview at the Folk Festival. One man, a music teacher, came back twice. "We'd have the performance and then sit back after it was over and talk about music, different ways of doing things," he said. "I enjoy helping musicians. It's always been that way." In "The Last Waltz," Robbie Robertson talks about how Hudson billed himself as a music teacher early on, when the group was the Hawks and backed singer Ronnie Hawkins, and later Bob Dylan.

  • RONNIE HAWKINS from Coast to Coast in Canada, the Name Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins Is Known As the Greatest Name in the Rock and Roll Field
Vol. 3, No.3 Week of March 15th, 1965 RONNIE HAWKINS From coast to coast in Canada, the name Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins is known as the greatest name in the rock and roll field. Ronnie has been one of the top draws in teen shows for many years. Even though not billed as a principle on many of the shows his performance tabs him as a star. His showmanship and easy going sincere manner is the reason his fans number in hundreds of thousands. Ronnie is making money in Canada in the record business, not much, but enough to make him want to become an even bigger name, not only as a performer but as a booster for Canadian talent. In his opinion there is just as much talent in Canada as there is in the US or England and he is going to do what he can to bring this talent the proper exposure. He's off to a good start with Robbie Lane and Doug Lycett. Also coming along are the Stratotones and ScottCushnie. Hawkins formed his own record comnany, Hawk Records and has just completed the installution ui studio built along the lines of Nashville but with many new innovations. Hawkins is aware of the meagre return on re.. cordsin Canada andistherefore subsidizing the new company with money he earns playing clubs and touring the country. Another dream that came true for Ronnie Hawkins was the opening ofThe Hawks Nest, a non-alcoholic strictly for teens night club.It was always a source of disappointment to Ronnie that he could never perform for the teenagers in downtown clubs because of the age limit.

THE OLD, WEIRD AMERICA THE WORLD OF BOB DYLANS BASEMENT TAPES 1ST EDITION DOWNLOAD FREE Greil Marcus | 9780312572914 | | | | | Greil Marcus Completing a pickup band with pianist Barry Goldberg, plus Butterfield's drummer Sam Lay and his bassist Jerome Arnold, Dylan rehearsed through the night and showed up the next day, on Newport's main stage, ready to experiment. Using bootleg recordings of Bob Dylan as a starting point, he dissected the American subconscious in Invisible Republic : Bob Dylan's Basement Tapespublished in From the balladeer who first presented himself not as the son of a respectable middle-class Jewish family from northern Minnesota but as a vagabond runaway who had no idea if his parents were dead or alive, to the dandy who when controversy over his turn to the pop arena erupted declared that his investment in folk music had been a con from the start, he was, it was sometimes said, a different person every time you saw him. The best thing I got from this book was exposure to Mr. Gathering in New York with the members of his touring band, the Hawks, he wrote joke songs and reimagined American folk and blues. With Dylan singing a barbed Plains States drawl and his rhythm guitar pressing for speed, Bloomfield jumps the train and drives it: "I remember," said Sim Webb, Casey Jones's fireman when the Illinois Central smashed into a freight train near Vaughn, Mississippi, on April 30,"that as I jumped from the cab Casey held down the whistle in a long, piercing scream.
