2010 MINOR LEAGUE SEASON REVIEW The Angels’ farm system concluded the 2010 season with a 351-341 record overall and a 9-8 mark in the playoffs. The Angels had three affi l iates qualify for postseason play: The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes captured the California League South Division Championship, but lost in the Cal League Championship Series while both the Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Orem Owlz were eliminated in the fi r st round of their respective postseasons. SALT LAKE BEES (73-71): The Salt Lake Bees, led by manager Bobby Mitchell (in his third season at Salt Lake), fi nished with a 73-71 record for a second place fi n ish (1.5 GB) in the Pacifi c North Division of the Pacifi c Coast League. The Bees fi n ished with their 15th winning season in the 17-year franchise history despite having a club record 65 different players on their roster this season. OF Peter Bourjos took off in July (.438 BA, 37 runs scored) and fi n ished the season as the Topps PCL Player of the Year and PCL Rookie of the Year. Bourjos, who was also named to the 2010 All PCL Team, led the PCL with 12 triples and led the Bees with 27 stolen bases (4th in PCL). INF Mark Trumbo was recognized as Angels Organizational Player of the Year after an All-Star season in which he led all of the minor leagues in home runs and was named to the 2010 All Pacifi c Coast League Team. Trumbo fi n ished the season leading the PCL in home runs (36), runs (103), total bases (307) and placed second in RBI (122). ARKANSAS TRAVELERS (55-85): The Arkansas Travelers, managed by Bobby Magallanes, compiled a 55-85 overall record, including 26-44 (4th place) in the fi rst half and 29-41 in the second half (4th place). Following the conclusion of the 2010 season, Arkansas announced a two-year extension to remain an Angels affi liate through 2012. OF Jeremy Moore led the Travs in fi v e offensive categories: average (.303), hits (138), RBI (61), stolen bases (24) and total bases (211) and fi n ished in the Texas League top 10 in each category. INF Andrew Romine was named to the Texas League All-Star Team after leading all shortstops with a .972 fi elding percentage. Romine batted .282 with three home runs, 15 doubles, four triples and 34 runs batted in. RANCHO CUCAMONGA QUAKES (78-62): The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, led by manager Keith Johnson, fi n ished with a 78-62 overall record, going 39-31 in the fi rst half and 39-31 in the second half to win the Southern Division of the California League. In postseason play, the Quakes won fi ve of six games to advance to the Cal League Championship Series where they lost in the fi f th game of a fi ve game series to the San Jose Giants. 1B Gabriel Jacobo was recognized as the Angels Organizational Defensive Player of the Year after posting a .997 fi elding percentage, commiting just two errors in 118 games (1,151 total chances). In addition to his stellar defense, the fi rst baseman also led the Quakes in nearly every major offensive category, batting .296 with 26 doubles, seven triples, 22 home runs and 107 RBI. Jacobo fi nished in the Cal League top 10 in hits, triples, home runs and RBI. RHP Tyler Chatwood was named Angels Organizational Pitcher of the Year after he fi nished the season with a combined 13-9 record with one shutout and a 2.84 ERA (155.1 IP – 49 ER) in 27 games (26 starts) between Rancho Cucamonga, Arkansas and Salt Lake. At Rancho, Chatwood compiled an 8-3 record, leading the Quakes in wins while posting a 1.77 ERA (81.1 IP – 16 ER) in 14 games, 13 starts. CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS (82-56): The Cedar Rapids Kernels, managed by Bill Mosiello, fi n ished the season with an 82-56 overall record; reaching 80 wins for just the ninth time in the 120+ year history of professional baseball in Cedar Rapids. The Kernels went 43-25 in the fi r st half (1st place) and 39-31 in the second half (2nd place). In postseason play, the Kernels lost 2-1 to the Clinton Lumberkings in the Midwest League Western Division semifi nals. OF Mike Trout batted .362 (113/312) earning him the Midwest League batting crown and propelling him to league MVP and Prospect of the Year honors. At the time of his promotion to Rancho Cucamonga, Trout led the MWL in fi ve categories: average (.362), stolen bases (45), hits (113), runs scored (76) and on base percentage (.454). RHP Fabio Martinez Mesa compiled a 7-3 record with a 3.92 ERA (103.1 IP – 45 ER) while striking out a team-leading 141 batters (third in MWL)...Martinez was named the 14th best prospect in the Midwest League by Baseball America. OREM OWLZ (39-36): The Orem Owlz, led by manager Tom Kotchman, compiled a 39-36 record, including 19-19 in the fi r st half (2nd place) and a 20-17 record (2nd place) in the second half. In postseason play, the Owlz lost to the Ogden Raptors, 2-1 in the Pioneer League South Division Series. OF Andrew Heid led the Owlz batting .362 (104/287) while connecting for nine home runs and 34 RBI. Heid led the Pioneer league with 104 hits while placing third in average and second in on-base percentage (.435). RHP Daniel Tillman compiled a 2-2 record while leading the Owlz with 10 saves and a 1.95 ERA (32.1 IP – 7 ER) in 22 appearances. Tillman was named the Angels’ Organizational Pitcher of the Month for July. ARIZONA ANGELS (24-31): The Arizona League Angels, managed by Ty Boykin, fi nished the season with a 24-31 record for fourth place in the East division. INF Jared Yakubik led the AZL Angels batting .307 (47/153) with 10 doubles and 22 RBI. Yakubik also tied for the team lead with 26 runs scored. RHP Suammy Baez posted a 4-4 record with a 2.68 ERA (74 IP – 22 ER) in 13 starts. Baez led the club with four victories and 70 strikeouts. 2010 SEASON IN REVIEW.
