A Case Against the Bucket List It’s all the rage now. Make a list, check it twice and off you go. It’s a race against whatever expiration date the Man Upstairs has stamped upon you. So hurry now, up the Grand Teton you go. Tomorrow, it’s off to King Mountain for some hang-gliding. After that, fly-fishing on the South Fork. After that, horsebacking in Island Park. After that, geo-caching at Hell’s Half Acre, opal mining in Spencer, run- ning the Pocatello Marathon, wake-boarding at Palisades, shooting photos in Yellowstone, chowing down at the Fisherman’s breakfast, strumming away at the Targhee Music Camp... These are great ideas all--I have no doubt--and the list of such to-dos could go on for miles. Recreational bucket lists seem to have a popular appeal. Why? Perhaps it is due to the very idea that our time here on terra firma is limited, and by some arbitrary cosmic rule of thumb, it is important that we make the most of our finite existence by experiencing the wonders of our world at every turn. At first blush it does sound exhilarating. But just consider this before you commit yourself to a summer in recreational hyperdrive: At the end of your days, will your greatest regret be that you didn’t try a particular food, or that you declined to partake in a particular activity, or that you sat out on an op- portunity for a specific adventure? Doubtful. Most of us have more particular concerns, like... Did I set aside that lunch hour at the swim meet when my daughter raced her personal best? Did I reschedule that business trip so I could take the family on a down- town shopping extravaganza? Did I burn the midnight oil to help clear my schedule for that unforgettable round of golf with my friends in Driggs? You don’t get answers to such questions by making a bucket list. If any- thing, you get closer to answering them by slowing down a notch and focus- ing on the bigger picture. If you want to fill up your sunny season with a non-stop schedule of recreational feats, more power to you. But better yet, we suggest you use this guide to help you make the most of what you already love. Depending on your areas of interest, there are a number of special sections, departments and editorial round-ups to point you in the right direction. In the end, the most precious aspect of summer in this neck of the woods is the time we have to enjoy it. We sincerely hope you find inspiration in these pages to help spur you into making the most of that time. Be safe out there, and have a fantastic summer here in beautiful East Idaho. 6 | EAST IDAHO SUMMER FUN GUIDE 2012 COMMuNITY CALENDAR JuNE 2 JuNE 6 March for Babies Downtown Spring Planting Presented by Eastern Idaho Regional Our annual “Springing Downtown JuNE 1 Medical Center Saturday, the March for Forward” flower planting day will be An Evening of Dueling Pianos Babies gives hope to the more than half Wednesday June 6th starting at 9 a.m. An evening of Dueling Pianos with Jeff a million babies born too soon each year.
