EDITOR’S NOTE IDAHO FALLS MAGAZINE STAFF Publisher Jason Harris Editor Steve Smede ADVERTISING DIRECTOR Mitch Brian ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE Linda Carter-Beck ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE Melisa Barnett MARKETING DIRECTOr Robin Black STAFF Assistant LeAnn Emery Graphic Designer April Frederick Harris Publishing, Inc. 360 B Street, Idaho Falls, ID 83402 For advertising information, contact Mitch Brian at 208-542-2230. A Case Against the Bucket List It’s all the rage now. Make a list, check it twice and off you go. It’s a race against whatever expiration date the Man Upstairs has stamped upon you. So hurry now, up the Grand Teton you go. Tomorrow, it’s off to King Mountain for some hang-gliding. After that, fly-fishing on the South Fork. After that, horsebacking in Island Park. After that, geo-caching at Hell’s Half Acre, opal mining in Spencer, run- ning the Pocatello Marathon, wake-boarding at Palisades, shooting photos in Yellowstone, chowing down at the Fisherman’s breakfast, strumming away at the Targhee Music Camp... These are great ideas all--I have no doubt--and the list of such to-dos could go on for miles. Recreational bucket lists seem to have a popular appeal. Why? Perhaps it is due to the very idea that our time here on terra firma is limited, and by some arbitrary cosmic rule of thumb, it is important that we make the most of our finite existence by experiencing the wonders of our world at every turn. At first blush it does sound exhilarating. But just consider this before you commit yourself to a summer in recreational hyperdrive: At the end of your days, will your greatest regret be that you didn’t try a particular food, or that you declined to partake in a particular activity, or that you sat out on an op- portunity for a specific adventure? Doubtful. Most of us have more particular concerns, like... Did I set aside that lunch hour at the swim meet when my daughter raced her personal best? Did I reschedule that business trip so I could take the family on a down- town shopping extravaganza? Did I burn the midnight oil to help clear my schedule for that unforgettable round of golf with my friends in Driggs? You don’t get answers to such questions by making a bucket list. If any- thing, you get closer to answering them by slowing down a notch and focus- ing on the bigger picture. If you want to fill up your sunny season with a non-stop schedule of recreational feats, more power to you. But better yet, we suggest you use this guide to help you make the most of what you already love. Depending on your areas of interest, there are a number of special sections, departments and editorial round-ups to point you in the right direction. In the end, the most precious aspect of summer in this neck of the woods is the time we have to enjoy it. We sincerely hope you find inspiration in these pages to help spur you into making the most of that time. Be safe out there, and have a fantastic summer here in beautiful East Idaho.

ITINERARY

It was a mere 33 centuries ago. A young pharaoh, worshiped as MOI Welcomes a god, was laid to eternal rest in all his splendor, his rule mysteri- ously cut short by an unknown King Tut tragedy. An innocent puppet- ruler, he had been caught in the midst of a dangerous and profound political, spiritual, and artistic revolution against the entire pantheon of ancient Egyptian gods by the first mono- theistic religious cult in history. Hidden in darkness beneath the desert sand for over three mil- lennia, his spectacular golden treasures were finally brought to light with their discovery by Howard Carter in 1922, to begin fulfilling their ancient magical task of ensuring that the name of Tutankhamun, the long- forgotten boy pharaoh, would live forever.

Ten years in the making, from the artisans of the Pharaonic Vil- lage in Egypt and the Metropoli- tan Museum of Art, this dazzling collection of reproductions of Tutankhamun’s legendary trea- sures recreates in all its glory the richest archaeological find of all time. The dunes are literally a dirt bike and ATV harbor. Most people park at the Egin Lakes Access area, which puts them in the middle of the 30-mile strip. Adventures and Activities Saddle Up! Horsin’ around in the East Idaho backcountry

If you have a penchant for mountain-biking, try pedaling up to the Palisades lakes in eastern Bonneville County. Then do it by horseback. You’ll find a newfound appreciation for the latter, we can assure you. When it comes to the enjoyment of exploring the East Idaho backcountry by saddle and reins, nothing else comes close. Not only is it a quiet and uniquely pastoral experience; it also makes practical sense. It’s environmentally sound, relatively safe and—for first-time buckaroos—more than a little educational. Horseback riding has less of a following than in decades past, but in many circles (such as the tourist trades around East Idaho, Jackson and Sun Valley), it is steadily reclaiming its status as the trail adventure mode of choice. Ready to saddle up and spur into action? Here are some resources to get you started:
