  • International Instrument for the Preservation of Cultural Diversity, As Commissioner Reding Stated to the House During the Debat
C 84 E/630 Official Journal of the European Union EN 3.4.2004 international instrument for the preservation of cultural diversity, as Commissioner Reding stated to the House during the debate on the Prets report last January 2004 in Strasbourg. It would appear that the rock star David Bowie’s concert at the Hong Kong Exhibition and Entertainment Centre next month is under threat because of his drummer’s links to the Falun Gong movement. A spokeswoman for the Hong Kong Association of Falun Gong has declared: ‘I am confident that the authorities in Hong Kong will still allow freedom of expression …’, but the Hong Kong Immigration Department has refused to comment on the rumours and has not yet confirmed its authorisation. 1. What information does the Commission have about this issue? 2. How does the Commission intend to approach the Chinese authorities in order to ensure that Mr Bowie’s professional artistic activities will not be subject to the same sort of political censorship as that suffered by the Falun Gong movement? Answer given by Mr Patten on behalf of the Commission (5 April 2004) The concert to which the Honourable Member refers was held in Hong Kong on Sunday 14 March. David Bowie’s drummer, Mr Sterling Campbell, took part as planned. (2004/C 84 E/0708) WRITTEN QUESTION E-0570/04 by Herbert Bösch (PSE) to the Commission (26 February 2004) Subject: Commission officials on leave According to the answer to my Written Question E-3061/02 (1), there were over 566 officials on leave for personal reasons on 10 December 2002.

EARL SLICK p98 & MORE... Recording His Final Album Future Publishing Limited, Quay House, The Ambury, Bath, BA1 1UA Telephone 01225 442244 Email [email protected] Online www.guitarist.co.uk Changes Like many others, I think everyone at Guitarist had more or less considered David Bowie to be immortal. Likewise, Lemmy seemed too much a part of rock’s scenery to leave us so soon. As we went to press with this issue, we also learned the sad news that Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey had passed (look out for a full tribute next month), making this winter the worst in memory for losing legends. The only very slight consolation for all this is that it prompted us to listen again to the music that made them household names. In the case of Bowie, it was a reminder of the astonishing breadth and ambition of his music-making (see cover feature, p76). Rightly regarded as classic now, Bowie’s music must have been sensational when he was starting out – and I’m sure not everyone ‘got it’ at the time. Passing years have a habit of making the new and strange in music feel comfortably familiar, and finally classic. That thought has been a reminder of the importance of seeking out uncommon sounds, and not just sticking to your comfort zone of old favourites.

The Glass Castle A Memoir Jeannette Walls SCRIBNER New York London Toronto Sydney Acknowledgments I©d like to thank my brother, Brian, for standing by me when we were growing up and while I wrote this. I©m also grateful to my mother for believing in art and truth and for supporting the idea of the book; to my brilliant and talented older sister, Lori, for coming around to it; and to my younger sister, Maureen, whom I will always love. And to my father, Rex S. Walls, for dreaming all those big dreams. Very special thanks also to my agent, Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, for her compassion, wit, tenacity, and enthusiastic support; to my editor, Nan Graham, for her keen sense of how much is enough and for caring so deeply; and to Alexis Gargagliano for her thoughtful and sensitive readings. My gratitude for their early and constant support goes to Jay and Betsy Taylor, Laurie Peck, Cynthia and David Young, Amy and Jim Scully, Ashley Pearson, Dan Mathews, Susan Watson, and Jessica Taylor and Alex Guerrios.
