    Maren Lübbke-Tidow Camera Austria International # 125, 2014 Staatsgrenze / Border “At what point does a state face its border?”i It is this rhetorically ambiguous figure that Seiichi Furuya purposefully employs to describe the motivation behind his work “Staatsgrenze / Border”, which was created between 1981 and 1983 in Austria. Detecting the borders of a state—this sounds like a utopian undertaking. Yet with a simple conceptual approach, Furuya has penetrated the unequivocally fragile core of nation-state regimes like those that sought to take root in Europe after the two world wars. The artist frequented the border regions of his adopted country of Austria, paced them out and questioned both their institutional bodies—customs officials or border police—and the nearby populace about their experiences. Black-and-white photographs of sites along the Austrian border to the former so- called Eastern Bloc countries of Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia were created in this way, along with several related written sentences penned by Seiichi Furuya, together with a map and an epilogue—all of which were compiled to form a twenty-three-part series, which was later expanded. A second epilogue on the work was developed in 1990 after the fall of the Iron Curtain. “Staatsgrenze / Border” was exhibited in Berlin for the first time in 2013,ii and in 2014 the work will be available for the first time in book form and will be expanded to include photographs of six further sites.iii “Staatsgrenze / Border” is a work about unfamiliar places to which no one ventures, but which encourage anyone who has ever traversed a border to tell stories of their border- crossing experiences.

K starejšemu in mlajšemu pleistocenskemu ledeniku v Zgornjesavski dolini (med Julijskimi Alpam in Karavankami, na stiku držav Slovenija, Italija in Avstrija) so pritekale ledene gmote iz Ziljske doline čez ožino pod Trbižem in čez preval Koren. Po novih ugotovitvah je bil zato savski ledenik sposoben zajezevanja ledenikov iz Julijskih Alp in ne obratno, kot navaja starejša literatura. Ključna gesla: geomorfologija, glacialna geomorfologija, holocenski procesi, melišča, človek poseg. Slovenija, Alpe, Julijske Alpe, tromejamed Slovenijo, Italijo in Avstrijo, Zgornje- savska dolina. Abstract: UDC 551.4:551.796(234.323.6) A Contribution to the Young-Quaternary Geomorphology in the Upper Sava Valley To the older and younger Pleistocene glacier in the valley of the upper Sava (between the Mts Julian Alps and Karavanke, in contact zone of the states Slovenia, Italy and Austria) ice masses from the Gailtal valley slided through the straits at Tarvisio and pass Koren (Wurzen). Evidences were found that the Save glaciers were for this reason able to dam many glaciers from the Julian Alps, and not inversely as reported in the old literature.     Travels in a £5 Morris Minor John Dixon (John Dixon] VT 7709 on the Istanbul to Ankara road, 1961 On 5th May 1959, just after watching Nottingham Forest win the FA Cup at Wembley, I noticed an advert for a 1932 Morris Minor on a scrappy bit of paper on the notice board of the Students Union in Sheffield. I had never heard of pre-war Morris Minors but phoned the number and spoke to the owner who was a reporter for The Star (Sheffield's evening newspaper). I went to see it in the garage where it was kept near the University. The owner told me that he had bought the car for £40 a few months before. He had gone on holiday leaving the car at or near a friend's house. On his return he was horrified to find that his friend had allowed all the local children to play in and vandalise the car. It seemed very sound, but the hood was ruined, the headlights and some of the instruments smashed. There were stones in the radiator and the engine would not start. I said I was interested, but did not want to take the car for 4 weeks when I would have finished my final degree examinations. He agreed to pay the 30 shillings rent for the garage for a month and I paid him the £5. On the 1st of June I was passing the road where the car was garaged only to see my car parked in the main road! The garage was locked - it was clear that the garage owner had pushed the car out and dumped it.
